Bloomington’s American restaurants may have you thinking of predictable burgers and fries, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with bland comfort food until you forget what culinary creativity tastes like. From elevated classics to innovative twists on regional favorites, we’ve curated the spots that truly define American dining here—whether you’re craving a celebratory feast or just a perfectly executed classic. Let’s dig in.
Uptown Cafe
$$ | (812) 339-0900 | WEBSITE
We’re not cardiologists, but we’re pretty sure a perfectly cooked steak has a lot of flavor you’re supposed to be enjoying. Uptown Cafe is a great American restaurant in Bloomington that offers high-end dishes like filet and NY strip steaks for prices you rarely see. Most entrees here are under $25, and appetizers are all around $12. Our move, though, is always the crab cakes, which come with house-made compound butter for $18. Just remember to save room for the cheesecake when it’s available.
Scenic View Restaurant
$ | (812) 837-9496 | WEBSITE
Scenic View Restaurant has one of the best views of Lake Monroe in Bloomington, so we’re very thankful they’re offering outdoor seating. They’ve got weekend brunch, including their fantastic Crab Cakes Benedict, by the lake, along with satisfying meal options like fish tacos with aioli, and $12 individual Bloody Marys. This pub-style spot has a relaxed atmosphere with umbrellas, and if you’re visiting nearby, you don’t have any excuse not to be enjoying their scenic setting.
Cloverleaf South Restaurant
$ | (812) 650-1017 | WEBSITE
Sometimes, you just need a damn good breakfast. And there aren’t many better places to get one than Cloverleaf South, the reliable spot for classic American fare in Bloomington. All their food is prepared perfectly by the best short-order cooks, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still affordable – their Leaf meal is the best deal to get, with your choice of meat, eggs, hash browns, and biscuits & gravy for $12.
They slow-cook their insanely tender turkey with stuffing, so make sure you try that, too.
The Honey Baked Ham Company
$$ | (812) 336-4426 | WEBSITE
A Bloomington ham shop that’s secretly also one of Indiana’s best post-workout spots, The Honey Baked Ham Company is serving killer hand-glazed hams, along with vegetarian and gluten-free options. Their whole menu is available online, meaning you can order dishes you’d never dream of making with your at-home kitchen set, including Augratin potatoes, honeybaked beans, and their signature ham. It’s the happiest you’ll ever be eating a ham dinner out of a to-go container.
C3 Bar
$$ | (812) 287-8027 | WEBSITE
C3 Bar has quietly been Bloomington’s go-to American spot for years. That’s because it’s super-relaxed and inviting, and their cocktails have been known to brighten even the worst days. Get the Lemon Drop Martini or the old fashioned. And whatever you order, they’ll bring it right out with exceptional presentation, so you don’t even have to lift a finger to enjoy it.
Cardinal Spirits
$$ | (812) 202-6789 | WEBSITE
If you’re in the mood for craft spirits and small plates, look no further than this rustic distillery in Bloomington. They’ve got deviled eggs, a cheese and charcuterie board, and tasty fries – all of which are so satisfying, they go perfectly with a chill Wednesday night out. Plus, we’re not sure there’s a more delightful experience in town than their 1/2 Price Flights on Fridays, which are basically a curated tasting of unique, well-marketed spirits.
Bonus points for the attached tasting room, where you can pick up all kinds of distillery merchandise, like bottles and glassware.
Cozy Table
$ | (812) 339-5900 | WEBSITE
Eating at this classic American spot has always felt like a meal at home. And now, their entire menu is available to-go. This includes everything from the Club #4 breakfast (French toast, two eggs, ham, and a side of bacon) to their simple yet well-prepared dinner options, but if you’re serious about your comfort food intake, get the breakfast specials. They’re massive combos of all the morning favorites on the menu, and exactly what you want after another long week of early mornings.
Available for takeout and delivery.
Texas Roadhouse
$$ | (812) 323-1000 | WEBSITE
Casual American steakhouse Texas Roadhouse has one of the most solid menus around, especially considering every single thing on it is $25 or less. That includes the $18 perfectly cooked sirloin and the $22 prime rib, which probably won’t jump out to you at first glance, but you should order them regardless.
Only somewhat related: Texas Roadhouse also serves fantastic yeast rolls with cinnamon butter – which you cannot eat as a main course, but you can enjoy while listening to the lively country music.
The Elm Restaurant
$$$ | (812) 407-4339 | WEBSITE
The Elm Restaurant is serving steak au poivre with a bone marrow crust, and we’re not sure there’s a better way to celebrate a special occasion. This excellent, creative dish is tender, flavorful, and topped with a delicious crust. The staff at The Elm will give you recommendations on what to pair it with when you order, but don’t worry – the cocktails and appetizers are consistently enjoyable.
Red Lobster
$$ | (812) 332-9712 | WEBSITE
Red Lobster is a great place for families to gather, so it makes sense that it’s the perfect spot for Bloomington locals to bring the kids. They’re serving much of their regular menu, including the must-try Crispy Dragon Shrimp, but if you want to share, your move is the combo choices with shrimp, crab, lobster, and steak.
The combos are all well-portioned, reasonably priced at $18-$25 per plate, then served with different sides based on what you get – the shrimp with fries and coleslaw, the lobster with baked potato and vegetables, and more. Plus, they’ve got attentive service and a comfortable environment if you’re dining in with accessibility needs.
Culver’s
$ | (812) 822-1837 | WEBSITE
Culver’s has locations across Indiana, including one in Plainfield, and should be right at the top of your list when you’re looking for something fast and fresh. Their menu includes a healthy mix of fantastic classic favorites and unique options like the mushroom and Swiss burger and surprisingly delicious Atlantic cod. Get some cheese curds and a chocolate peanut butter brownie concrete mix to balance it all out.
Tap Bloomington
$$ | (812) 287-8579 | WEBSITE
Tap Bloomington – home to some of the best upscale bar food in Bloomington – has a menu that goes beyond typical fare with gourmet burgers like the haystack burger and perfect shareable tap fries. They offer a wide variety of beers, including rare finds and local brews like the celestia beer, for around $8-12 per pint. Considering just how good these beers and dishes are, this is a stellar experience that we will absolutely be returning for – whether we’re with friends or not.
Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen
$ | (812) 822-1628 | WEBSITE
Fried chicken is about as crowd-pleasing of a family meal as you can find, which is why you’ll probably end up visiting Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen sooner rather than later. This excellent neighborhood spot in Bloomington serves up all kinds of great comfort food which can easily feed a family, and most dishes are under $25 – including the $12 fried chicken fingers, which are one of the best deals around.
Our favorites are the perfectly cooked shrimp and fries and the slaw, which Elle always makes sure is fresh. Get the fried chicken fingers for the kids, too. They’ve also been running special deals for regular customers.
Upland Brewing Co.
$ | (812) 364-2337 | WEBSITE
If you tell us there’s a better way to make us forget about our worries than Upland Brewing Co.’s Beer Roasted Salmon, we won’t believe you. This perfectly cooked, flavor-packed dish is one of the most satisfying, well-balanced, and fantastic plates around, and it costs less than $25. Beyond that, it’s hard to go wrong with the rest of the menu, but our other favorites are the Pig & Fig sandwich with its sweet and savory combo on brioche, and the crispy brussel sprouts appetizer.
Heads up, though – this is another spot where the host’s attitude could use some work.
O’Charley’s Restaurant & Bar
$$ | (812) 333-6687 | WEBSITE
O’Charley’s Restaurant & Bar is perhaps the best American restaurant in Bloomington, so it makes sense that it’s also one of the best for families and large groups. There are plenty of delicious dishes on the menu, and the majority of the options will satisfy a hearty appetite that you don’t often find in casual dining spots – especially the perfectly cooked salmon, which you should order with their great sides.
We could write hundreds of words about this experience, but a quick rundown of our favorites is the customizable chicken dishes, the vegetarian salads, and the memorable desserts.
Big Woods Bloomington
$ | (812) 625-3493 | WEBSITE
Big Woods Bloomington, the Irish pub-style restaurant just off the IU campus, has a great lineup of popular dishes that all involve the Brew Burger with bleu cheese, truffle fries, and peach cider, in addition to a good selection of craft QuaffOn beers. Our favorite of those signature options comes with the Malik Reneau Burger – which is $18 per person for the whole meal – but it’s also hard to beat the fish tacos and street corn combo for $14 per person. Why else was Friday night created?
Crazy Horse
$ | (812) 336-8877 | WEBSITE
If you’ve never tried Crazy Horse, you’ve been missing out on one of the most satisfying meals around. Even though the menu is smaller now, you can get the food in a variety of ways. And whether it’s the Pressed Cuban sandwich, blackened salmon, or Coach’s roast turkey sandwich, you’re going to get fresh ingredients, hearty portions, and delicious, flavorful dishes. Crazy Horse also has a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff that make you feel like part of the family.
The Owlery Restaurant
$ | (812) 333-7344 | WEBSITE
If you’re craving plant-based comfort food, we’re not sure there’s a better (or more satisfying) option than The Owlery Restaurant, the cute little veg spot with great vegan options. The all-you-can-eat spaghetti can easily be split amongst two people, especially if you pair it with the wonderful mushroom gravy biscuits. Which you should, because the dish involves thick, fluffy biscuits served with rich mushroom gravy.
Add whichever unique dishes you want to go with it – our favorites are the ‘fish’ tacos and the recommended chicken fried steak.
Applebee’s Grill + Bar
$ | (812) 336-9147 | WEBSITE
The top casual dining spot in Bloomington, and among the best places for affordable American fare in the entire city, Applebee’s will put every single person in your group in a good mood. The half-off appetizers, especially during happy hour, and the reliably tasty main dishes are all non-negotiable parts of your visit, and maybe add some drinks from the bar.
Just don’t expect flawless service every time—we suspect it’s impossible to leave without noticing that some servers, like Lars, are exceptionally kind and attentive, while others might feel a bit rushed.
