And while their portions are by no means small, if you’re looking for truly exceptional American cuisine, or just want a meal that captures Cleveland’s unique spirit, things start to get tricky. So we made this: a guide to 10 of our favorite local American restaurants.
Greatroom

Greatroom is a hotel lobby restaurant and bar, and happens to be one of our favorite spots for generous portions, lively atmosphere, and excellent people-watching. The location in a major chain hotel also has a bustling environment where you can get dishes like the hummus platter, burger, fries, turkey club, and chips. Oh, and that view.
Marjees Bar & Grill

Marjees Bar & Grill is a Southern-style restaurant in Cleveland, and it’s a gem of a place with great people and conversations, perfect for a Sunday dinner or any casual dining experience. More importantly, they also have delicious food that reminds customers of home-cooked meals made with love and soul, like the standout wing dinner that’s well-seasoned and fresh.
They also have comfortable, friendly service that’s quick and welcoming, with an atmosphere that feels like a cozy neighborhood spot where you can relax over a meal that costs around $15-20 per person.
Merwin’s Wharf

Merwin’s Wharf in Cleveland has been serving American classics like slider hamburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, empanadas, and their signature one and a half pound pretzel with dipping sauces for years. The open-air dining space is thoughtfully arranged, so there’s plenty of room to comfortably enjoy the scenic river views while sampling favorites like the fantastic shrimp and grits or the delicious Grouper bites.
The welcoming staff keeps everything running smoothly, making it a great spot for lunch on a beautiful day with reasonable prices that match the quality portions.
1330 on the River

Cleveland’s dining scene could use more spots like this, and that’s where 1330 on the River comes in. This riverside restaurant has standout dishes like the excellent lamb, salmon, and pasta with a secret sauce, plus an attentive staff. They also serve unique cocktails and offer scenic views along the Cuyahoga River.
Pickwick & Frolic Restaurant and Club

Nestled in downtown Cleveland, Pickwick & Frolic Restaurant and Club serves up any classic American dish you could possibly crave, plus entertainment and atmosphere that would make anyone who loves a good night out smile real big. Want a perfectly cooked Filet Mignon or fresh, flavorful sides? No problem. Looking for lively fun or a comedy show to cap the evening? Don’t worry.
Even if you just come for the excellent service and friendly staff, the welcoming owner will still visit your table to make you feel like family.
Grille 55 Downtown
Head downtown for fried green tomatoes, garlic butter mashed potatoes, and creamy mac and cheese at Grille 55 Downtown. This lively spot also features killer music and a fun, energetic atmosphere. Plus the pièce de résistance: friendly, accommodating staff who make every visit feel like a celebration.
The South Side

This hidden gem in Tremont has an impressive amount of bar classics, creative sandwiches, and vegetable-forward dishes, all served in generous portions. Special shout out to the sun-dried tomato chicken sandwich and Brussels sprouts that are absolutely amazing. Extra special shout out to the friendly waitstaff, including a standout server named Jules, who makes every visit feel like a celebration.
Terra Bistro

Terra Bistro is Edgewater’s go-to for craft beer, comfort food, and a laid-back atmosphere. This place is a must-visit for when you’re craving a smash burger, pimento cheese dip, or Nashville hot chicken, and if you’re dining with your dog they also have a pet-friendly patio to enjoy the meal together. And we feel obligated to mention that this is one of the only spots in Cleveland that serves pierogies with crème fraîche.
Gunselman’s Tavern

Family-owned and nestled in its Cleveland neighborhood, Gunselman’s Tavern will delight you with their cozy establishment that offers a wide variety of breakfast, brunch, and dinner options – in addition to a charming little bar that holds a treasure chest of hearty dishes, burgers, ethnic cuisine, and daily specials. They don’t skimp on portions, but that’s about it.
The Aviator Cleveland

This airport-adjacent restaurant is tucked away with a view of Cleveland Hopkins, so try and stay focused. The Aviator Cleveland has a pleasant dining experience with good food. In fact, this spot always seems to provide the most attentive, welcoming, friendliest version of whatever happens to be on the menu. Though that might be all the macaroni and steak talking.
