We obviously love dining out, but sometimes you just want classic American comfort without leaving home. So for those nights when you’d rather savor a juicy burger or crispy fried chicken on your couch while debating what to stream, you need reliable local spots. From our favorite meat-and-three to excellent barbecue joints, here’s where to turn when you’re craving genuine American fare in Greeneville.
Baileyton Restaurant
$ | (423) 234-7862 | WEBSITE
Southern comfort travels well to begin with, and Baileyton Restaurant is our favorite spot in Greeneville to grab some. Their plates are full of homemade flavor, with tender catfish and hushpuppies to soak it all up. And if you’re truly on the go, you could grab a club sandwich with fries for the road.
Hyperion Grill
$ | (423) 638-4143 | WEBSITE
The Philly Cheese Sub is one of the greatest bar food items in existence, but when it’s piled with cumbersome hunks of grilled meat, you’re bound to have some kind of mess. Not at this Greeneville grill. Their best sandwiches involve one long, properly melted cheese blanket—that way, the protein stays in place among the soft roll, tangy peppers, and snips of fresh onions. As for the crispy fried pickle appetizer and countless tater tot particles? Good luck if your car interior is made of fabric.
Tipton’s Cafe
$ | (423) 639-4201 | WEBSITE
There are plenty of spots in Greeneville where you can grab breakfast and be on your way, but the best biscuits and gravy come from a country diner that doesn’t specialize in to-go orders at all. That’s because Tipton’s incredible homemade biscuits come smothered in rich sausage gravy by default—allowing the fluffy biscuits, savory gravy, and comforting southern cooking to combine forces for a few minutes before promptly making you a very happy human.
One of these along with a side of cheesy grits travels well, whether you’re enjoying it at their cozy booth with a can of soda or driving it home.
Pal’s
$ | (423) 638-7555 | WEBSITE
If we lived in an alternate universe where burgers and fries were the only food left on earth, we’d probably choose to eat at Pal’s for every meal. Here, you’ll find unique dishes like the Barbie Doll sandwich year-round, along with delicious Frenchie fries and tea. Our favorite just might be the Barbie Doll, though, a perfectly assembled burger with fresh toppings, a special sauce that you’d typically find on gourmet sandwiches, and a side of those crisp, golden fries.
These meals are served tremendously fast, which makes them great for everything from a quick lunch break to a satisfying dinner on the go. The friendly staff works with great teamwork in the small, busy space, and the clean areas with surprises on the walls make it a memorable stop. Just be prepared—they can be a bit stingy with the ketchup packets.
Captain D’s
$ | (423) 639-6311 | WEBSITE
The grilled whitefish coming from this clean and friendly fast-food spot in Greeneville is not just a high-quality piece of fish. It’s some of the best fast-food seafood in town. Each perfectly portioned fillet wears a light char that seals in moisture, served with crisp Cole slaw, steamed broccoli that stays bright green, and gluten-free options that don’t sacrifice flavor. It’s a work of value that satisfies any seafood craving without leaving your wallet empty.
We recommend going with the lunch special, but if you enjoy larger portions, the regular grilled fish has great satisfaction from both size and taste.
Brumley’s Restaurant and Lounge
$$ | (423) 787-7500 | WEBSITE
This hotel restaurant is strictly for special occasions, and a trip inside means you’re settling into a very cozy and comfortable atmosphere, or you’ve already been charmed by the beautiful decor. Either way, that experience should include standout dishes like the pork shoulder packed with flavor in every tender bite, or the prime rib. But don’t forget about the smoked cheese grits—because, satisfaction.
Boroonie’s Bar & Grill
$ | (423) 525-4632 | WEBSITE
This Greeneville spot nails American comfort classics with grilled cheese layered with turkey, a Philly Cheese Steak piled with provolone and mushrooms, and standout sides like crispy fries. It’s the kind of food that travels perfectly in a to-go box, whether you’re grabbing a solo meal after work or spreading out platters for the family like it’s a weekend feast. Just make sure you catch the live music or karaoke night—you’ll regret it if you don’t.
Ma & Pa’s Restaurant
$ | (423) 638-2427 | WEBSITE
Ma & Pa’s Restaurant specializes in Southern comfort food served in generous portions, and this home-style cooking is spectacular. From cheeseburgers that satisfy like a backyard barbecue, to Cajun catfish flaky enough to make us swear off frozen fish forever, this cuisine has occupied our thoughts more than comfort food probably should. The breakfast travels extraordinarily well, especially when paired with sweet tea and biscuits and gravy topped with sausage crumbles and black pepper.
Waffle House
$ | (423) 636-0222 | WEBSITE
Waffle House serves the best breakfast in Greeneville. Their crispy bacon and perfectly scrambled eggs are a must-order, and their hash browns are proven to cure the morning blues (we’re not therapists, but we’re pretty confident in that assertion). Eating waffles with chocolate chips and buttered toast straight from the plate while watching the cooks work their magic is one of the most satisfying acts of comfort we can think of.
Aubrey’s
$ | (423) 823-9691 | WEBSITE
When it comes to casual dining with consistent quality, Aubrey’s in Greeneville has it all. Their Saturday special of a half bottle of pinto noir is a delightful pairing with any meal, especially when preceded by their complimentary brown bread with fresh butter. They make an excellent choice for families or casual dinners, particularly when followed by their variety of salads and appetizers prepared just as requested.
Aunt Bea’s Home Cooking
$ | (423) 638-1451 | WEBSITE
It goes without saying that you should order chicken and dumplings at Aunt Bea’s Home Cooking, but we’ll say it anyway: this comfort food is fantastic. The result of tender chicken paired with fluffy corn bread is this happy marriage of hearty flavors and homemade warmth, honeymooning together on plates that make you feel like you’re in a movie. Go all in with their fried apples (we prefer them warm).
And while you’ll definitely want the chicken and dumplings in some form or another, the Philly Cheesesteak omelet is the unsung hero—well-seasoned and satisfying, it’s excellent breakfast fare, and shines in a town that has a few too many tasteless versions.
The Burger Shack
$ | (423) 636-0978 | WEBSITE
Grabbing a Hobart Jr. cheeseburger with ham and a bowl of their homemade beef stew is a way better cold day pick-me-up than huddling under a blanket or watching reruns—and The Burger Shack always hits right when the weather’s chilly. The only downside to ordering takeout from this Greeneville staple is that you don’t get to enjoy their very friendly service in their inviting dining room. But that’s a great reason to come back.
Mrs.Belt’s Cafe
$ | (423) 525-4126 | WEBSITE
Mrs. Belt’s Cafe in Greeneville serves some very tasty homemade breakfast dishes, and they run a cozy diner operation, too. In addition to daily specials like the exceptional chicken livers, you can get classic favorites like fluffy biscuits with sausage gravy or a generous Denver Omelette, and the best comforting meal they serve: fair-priced plates with friendly staff, homemade style, and hearty portions.
Little Top Drive-Thru
$ | (423) 639-9800 | WEBSITE
Pull up to Little Top Drive-Thru for a quick little takeout order, and don’t be surprised if you’re quoted a twenty-minute wait. Stick it out for some of the best burgers in Greeneville. Their bacon cheeseburger has a smoky bacon crunch, burst of melted cheese, and juicy patty that fuses to each toasted bun. We could eat a double order of those alone and call it a meal.
But that’d be ignoring the Sonny with mushroom Swiss and grilled onions, complete with caramelized onions that involve more sweet depth than sharp bite. Or the seasoned fries in their large portion, which crunch like they’ve been seasoned by a chef wielding a salt shaker with reckless abandon. (The drive-thru line would move a lot slower if everyone ordered these.) Only twenty minutes for that? Worth it.
Circle S Farm Kitchen
$ | (423) 588-5451 | WEBSITE
Just like a farm bell ringing at sunrise, a great meal at Circle S Farm Kitchen is guaranteed. This Greeneville American spot serves some of the best pulled pork in town, along with burgers and a menu of classics that work together to make the ultimate comfort meal. Whether your order involves tender sirloin or sweet potato salad that melts into creamy perfection, the only wrong move here would be to skip the beans.
Applebee’s Grill + Bar
$ | (423) 636-1483 | WEBSITE
The welcoming environment at Applebee’s Grill + Bar in Greeneville is just as comforting as the good value it offers. And not only is this a lively place with lots of conversations going on simultaneously—it’s one of the most reliably pleasant dining experiences we’ve had around here. That’s thanks to tasty dishes that arrive exactly as ordered, a helpful staff that stays nice even on a busy football night, and service that’s both pleasant and efficient.
Pair all of that good stuff with a warm, bustling atmosphere that makes you feel welcome, and you have a spot that absolutely won’t disappoint when you’re craving great food and a great time. Just note that these reliably satisfying meals come in at around $15–$25 per person, making it a place you’ll want to return to again and again.
IHOP
$ | (423) 234-4467 | WEBSITE
Much like a classic diner breakfast or a reliable road trip playlist, this truck stop-adjacent spot in Greeneville has no misses. They keep breakfast simple here, and it pays off. You won’t find twenty pancake varieties, but a focused lineup of fluffy buttermilk perfection. Syrup options are already on the table, with little pitchers of maple and fruit toppings ready to make you smile. But the most valuable perk is that menu indecision ceases to exist.
Morning prioritizing the Fisherman’s Feast will be as satisfying as afternoon involving the Cali Turkey Melt. And dare we say, their takeout operation might be even better than staying awhile.
RedEye Bar & Grill
$ | (423) 588-5337 | WEBSITE
We can’t recall the last $8.99 chain restaurant burger we ordered. Not because we don’t eat them, but because they’re mostly unremarkable. Enter RedEye Bar & Grill, a welcoming bar and grill in Greeneville that works wonders with their juicy, flavorful patties. They also serve cold, well-poured drinks, including cheap tap beer and liquor that rivals the pours at Knoxville’s fanciest cocktail bars—but costs a fraction of the price.
And if the barstools look occupied at any given moment, just wait a few minutes for someone like Angie or Brie to help you find a spot.
Becky’s Sandwich House
$ | (423) 639-8161 | WEBSITE
Becky’s Sandwich House doesn’t look like much from the outside (or the inside while we’re at it). But if you’re on a mission for a great lunch, this unassuming spot in Greeneville should be on your shortlist. The hand-pattied burgers here have a stunning char, a pristine bun-to-patty ratio, and crinkle-cut fries that crunch like seasoned potato chips (as the burger gods intended). Becky’s classic cheeseburger is an instant classic, though the chili and potato salad are sides to prioritize.
