If you think Hilo’s dining scene is just about poke bowls and plate lunches, think again. Space for innovative flavors might seem limited on this island, but these Asian fusion spots prove otherwise. From Korean-Mexican tacos with a view of Rainbow Falls to sushi burritos enjoyed under banyan trees, here are eight places where culinary boundaries disappear—perfect for your next group adventure.
Puka Puka Kitchen
$ | (808) 933-2121 | WEBSITE
Need something on the cozier side? Try Puka Puka Kitchen, a cash-only Asian fusion spot in Hilo. Grab a seat at one of the few tables in this tiny shop, and enjoy a massive portion of curry with chicken katsu or the fried pork cutlet. The fish, lamb, and salad are also fantastic, in case you want to keep things fresh. You’ll probably spend around $25 per person here, but if you need a quick bite with friendly service and delicious food, it’s worth it.
Poke Market, LLC
$ | (808) 961-5915 | WEBSITE
This sushi spot in Hilo is part poke market and part takeaway window, and there’s a unique setup where you order at the counter and watch the chef craft your meal. There’s always a good selection of things like the 20 Piece Oshizushi box, the average Joe poke bowl, and super fresh ingredients like Ube potato and crispy pickles, and when your server hands over everything fresh from the kitchen, you’ll remember why simply prepared fish is the ultimate island food.
As an added bonus, this place easily accommodates food allergies with staff knowledgeable about gluten. The only real downside is that Poke Market gets busy, and they don’t take reservations for their two small sidewalk tables. But it’s worth a wait.
Daiichi Ramen
$ | (808) 959-9898 | WEBSITE
Daiichi Ramen is the best Asian fusion restaurant in Hilo, and they have a large parking lot (which is a blessing given their popularity) right outside their unassuming space. Whenever we’re here, we order the umami-packed ramen, generous shrimp fried rice, a bowl of perfectly balanced beef curry, and some not-too-heavy vegan ramen for everyone at the table.
Groups of more than six people might want to call ahead since they’re always busy, but they can accommodate up to 25 people in case your casual meal is more of a feast.
Cheng’s Chop Suey House
$ | (808) 935-8868 | WEBSITE
Operating out of a simple storefront in Hilo, Cheng’s Chop Suey House offers a menu of Chinese classics with generous takeout portions. It’s a solid option for a quick meal when you don’t want to spend more than $25 per person, and it’s easy to get your order quickly through their efficient takeout service. Try the lemon chicken, which comes with a tangy sauce and crispy coating. For $2 extra, you can get extra green onion on your chop suey.
Nori’s Saimin and Snacks
$ | (808) 935-9133 | WEBSITE
As the name suggests, this cozy spot is meant for comfort. Grab your order to go, and try the garlic fry saimin, some chocolate mochi, or the BBQ beef. You won’t have to worry if you’re picking up for the whole family. That sort of generosity is expected here, and your takeout bag will just be packed with enough to feed multiple people anyway. If you want something nostalgic, look at the vintage photos on the walls where you can see the homestyle vibe with a low-key atmosphere around you.
