When most people imagine a bar and grill in Redondo Beach, they picture a casual spot with burgers and beers by the pier. And while there are establishments on this list serving classic American fare with ocean views, those who explore beyond the boardwalk will discover much more. We’re talking about lively sports bars with surprisingly inventive pub food, and upscale grill houses where the steaks are actually worth the splurge.
Richmond Bar & Grill
$ | (310) 322-7397 | WEBSITE
Grab a seat at Richmond Bar & Grill’s coolest patio spot, a covered outdoor room in the back of this established El Segundo bar. You won’t find any generic domestic beers here—the focus is on local brews and a wide selection of ice-cold IPAs. Build your own burger, with your choice of patty paired with their delicious chips made from massive potato slices. Or if that requires too much thought, go for one of their tasty sandwiches or salads.
But if you end up staying longer than planned, maybe settle into the spacious main patio area across from the Old Town Music Theater.
Rebel Republic Social House Redondo
$$ | (424) 352-2600 | WEBSITE
Rebel Republic Social House is in Riviera Village, but it’s much more inviting than you’d expect, set up with a relaxed vibe and outdoor seating that exudes a casual California feel with friendly, welcoming touches. (But it is still a bar and grill, so you can show up in jeans and a t-shirt.) The food gets tasty with items like the Wednesday burger and nachos and tacos, but what’s also fun is the wide selection of tap beers accompanied by a lively atmosphere when busy.
Fair prices and prompt service from staff like Adrian help those of us who just want a chill spot to hang out. Rebel Republic is not the only great place in Redondo Beach: there are other bar and grill restaurants, but this one is great for a burger and fries or Sunday brunch as you enjoy the beautiful ambiance.
Schooner Bar & Grill
$$ | (310) 214-1430 | WEBSITE
You’ve never had fish tacos like these ones. Here, the tacos are perfectly seasoned and fresh, their flavor brightened with lime and spice. They match the atmosphere of the grill—unpretentious booths and polished wood tucked into a Redondo Beach side street. Simply put, Schooner Bar & Grill is one of the area’s most welcoming spots, and one of the easiest to visit.
But it’s worth the effort of finding street parking or the underground garage for Redondo’s best fish tacos, as well as a fun karaoke night or 49ers game. Given the loud speakers during events and laid-back vibe, it’s best for casual gatherings or solo drinks, especially at the bar in front of the super sweet bartender who makes the ‘Woo Woo’.
The Venice Whaler
$$ | (310) 821-8737 | WEBSITE
Everyone’s got their favorite beachside spots, and The Venice Whaler, which opened nearly a decade ago, is one of ours. It shares a view with the pier, while upstairs, diners soak in the sunset, watch the waves, and enjoy themed nights, which is practically a local tradition in Redondo Beach.
Grab an outdoor table for the coconut shrimp and the cod fish sandwich, which simultaneously proves that bar food can be divine (its portions are generous and satisfying) and you can find terrific views in a casual grill (in Redondo Beach, at least). Also get the smashed burger, partly for the novelty of getting such a solid burger in a beachfront setting, and partly for the juicy patty that’s fresh and nicely cooked.
East Grand Bar & Grille
$$ | (310) 322-0999 | WEBSITE
Trendier bar and grills try to capture the classic American experience, but East Grand is the real deal. Established as a Redondo Beach staple, it’s one of the area’s enduring casual spots and the straightforward, no-frills setting continues to serve the regulars with their cars parked in the nearby lot, along with beachgoers looking for a reliable meal.
Standard breakfast items fill the buffet line and remnants of simpler dining eras—think basic burgers, straightforward pancakes, and familiar sides—have found their place here. You’re here for the $19 breakfast buffet and the basic dinner options, still served with the expected condiments and familiar presentation.
Jersey’s Bar & Grill
$$ | (310) 374-2424 | WEBSITE
There’s dive bar food, and then there’s Jersey’s food. One of the popular items that’s a take on loaded tots looks like a plate piled with crispy golden goodness, while the wings have sauce pretending to be a flavor explosion. The portions are big, but we actually prefer the simpler bar fare—and all of which can be enjoyed with cheap drinks.
Jersey’s is one of Redondo Beach’s coolest spots, styled like a classic neighborhood dive, with an outdoor patio and bar games, with a menu of wings, loaded tots, and solid bar food to match. It’s also a great place to hang with friends, as the atmosphere stays lively through the evening, and a seat at one of the tables is a prime spot for watching the Cleveland Browns.
The coach’s sport bar & grill
$ | (424) 374-8109 | WEBSITE
The Coach’s may be modeled after classic sports bars, but it’s uniquely Redondo Beach, with a mixed atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re in a very casual spot that just happens to be under new management. And the service takes inspiration from the friendly crew—there are kind interactions and a diverse crowd that gives the place its character. It’s an establishment aiming to improve, so it’s best to keep expectations realistic and go with an open mind.
Wave Poolside Bar & Grill
$$$ | (310) 574-4333 | WEBSITE
For drinks right by the pool, head to Wave Poolside Bar & Grill at the Ritz-Carlton, Marina Del Rey. It feels like you’re visiting a friend’s coastal retreat, with comfy chairs and fire pits that add to the cozy atmosphere. Swing by after a sunset stroll along the marina, perch at the walk-up bar facing the spectacular view, and order from their unique and delicious food options, including great bar bites and refreshing drinks.
The friendly and attentive staff ensures you’re well-fed and hydrated, with free samples of drinks and snacks making for a delightful dining experience.
Project Barley Taps and Grill
$ | (310) 376-9215 | WEBSITE
Though it’s on the Redondo pier, Project Barley Taps and Grill isn’t your usual waterfront spot. It’s a lively bar and grill: the boardwalk’s epic sunsets are a backdrop to communal picnic tables, a nearby skatepark keeping teens entertained, and live music almost every night. Locals and visitors mingle in the festive space over craft beers made right on the pier and solid happy hour prices.
And there’s no fussy small plates here, rather thick and juicy burgers—some of the best in Cali—and soft pretzels that are a must-try.
Hinano Cafe
$ | (310) 822-3902 | WEBSITE
Redondo Beach’s bar and grill scene is thriving. If only there were one spot that captured its casual, beachy essence. Enter: Hinano Cafe, a cozy place near the sand that serves up great burgers and a wide selection of beer at the bar. On a recent visit, we enjoyed a classic cheeseburger with all the toppings in abundance and a side of chips and banana peppers. But this local favorite isn’t just about the food: we’ve also soaked up the fun, lively vibe with live music inside.
With the indoor and outdoor seating, friendly staff, and laid-back atmosphere (though the patio can get a bit sandy on windy days), Hinano Cafe is the perfect place for a satisfying, no-frills meal. Parking can be tricky, but the all-day beach parking for $9 is worth it for the experience.
Iron City Tavern
$ | (310) 547-4766 | WEBSITE
Iron City Tavern is one of those Redondo Beach bar and grills that actually feels authentic. Its entrance is right off the main street, and it used to be a neighborhood hardware store. It’s also got more of a, well, gritty charm than your usual polished tavern, with Stone Temple Pilots posters crowding the walls in the center of the room. The food is excellent, whether it’s the Pastrami sandwich, the best in town, or the unseasoned chicken breast they’ll prepare for service dogs.
Everything here is hearty—make sure you get the french fries that come vented properly in takeout boxes. Wednesdays are particularly welcoming.
Sports Harbour
$ | (424) 383-1286 | WEBSITE
Make sure to try the lemon pepper wings, a standout among the bar’s solid lineup, at this spacious well-lit sports haven that’s also a local fan favorite. Come solo or with friends to watch games at the bar, or bring a crew and claim one of the pool tables up front.
The food alone is worth stopping by for, including the California chicken sandwich, pork burrito, and a hearty chicken soup that, like the place, initially seems straightforward but delivers with its friendly service and competitive Friday atmosphere.
