Maybe you just left the Flats and need something more substantial than craft IPAs. Perhaps your shift ended at midnight and reheated leftovers won’t cut it. Or maybe you’re simply craving a proper meal after last call. Cleveland might not be known for its late-night dining scene, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with gas station pizza. These spots serve real food alongside their drinks—long after most kitchens have closed.
Literary Tavern
$$ | (216) 862-1916 | WEBSITE
After years of popularity in Tremont, the Literary Tavern has become a neighborhood fixture, transforming a former storefront into a lively space full of sturdy wooden tables and walls decorated with book-themed artwork. It’s equal parts cocktail bar and restaurant, and while none of the food will blow you away, it’s a great place to get calamari, corn cakes, and the LIT burger when you’re looking for solid sustenance with your drinks.
The cocktail menu changes with the seasons, making it one of the better spots downtown for creative libations. The atmosphere is inviting and fun, though the noise level can get high and some seating feels a bit awkward. Service is attentive and welcoming, with the chef and waiter both adding to the friendly, community vibe.
There can be inconsistencies in dish preparation from visit to visit, but overall it’s a really enjoyable spot that’s easily recommended for its good food and supportive atmosphere.
Casey Jones Tavern
$ | (216) 476-1164 | WEBSITE
You might get some curious glances if you mention you’re heading to Casey Jones Tavern, but just say ‘the karaoke spot in Cleveland’ and smiles will appear. It’s a background character that deserves a more prominent role, with an atmosphere made up of lively classics like friendly bartenders, a fantastic DJ, and drama-free nights that all feel like textbook-ready versions of themselves.
Karaoke here is sold by the night—if, like us, you’re not much of a singing mathematician, that’s about three hours of fun per visit. And all of it is available inside the tavern until late every weekend.
Dunlap’s Corner Bar
$ | (216) 417-2203 | WEBSITE
The ice-cold beer at Dunlap’s Corner Bar is a classic done right—pairing a crisp, refreshing pint with a laid-back atmosphere, a diverse crowd of artistic and working-class folks, and an electric yet welcoming vibe that makes every visit memorable. Of course, there’s also a full lineup of strong, affordable drinks that we like to rotate into our orders every now and then. Or just make a night of it.
The venue hosts comedy shows, poetry readings, and live performances nightly, so there’s plenty of time to work your way through a few different acts.
McNamara’s Pub
$ | (216) 356-6000 | WEBSITE
McNamara’s Pub stays open until 2am on game nights, and if you’re looking for a quiet drink after that hour, maybe consider heading home. There’s a sense of familiarity when walking into this Cleveland Heights spot. While a few features like the dart boards or the Browns memorabilia give hints about the vibe, most of the atmosphere comes from the lively crowd and friendly banter that only regulars fully understand.
If you’re OK with a little noise, grab a seat at the bar, order your drink preference—craft beer or classic cocktail—then sit back and enjoy the game.
The Little Rose Tavern
$ | (216) 331-1441 | WEBSITE
The Little Rose Tavern is Cleveland’s answer to a classic dive bar, if the neighborhood watering hole got lost in a 1970s time capsule and decided to model its vibe after a vintage version of comfort. This vegan-friendly spot—right in the heart of the city—is a bit of an exception in a few ways. It’s less pretentious, with a cozy patio that’s perfect for grabbing a brunch after a round of live music or a night of karaoke.
But more importantly, it’s one of the few places that’s reliably welcoming, so you don’t have to worry about fitting in the next time a late-night pierogi craving strikes.
Smedley’s Bar & Grill
$ | (216) 331-0335 | WEBSITE
The vibe at Smedley’s is basically a dive bar that went to rock and roll school. Think pool tables and a jukebox, plus all the usual sports on TV. It’s laid-back enough that you can probably hang for hours, though we’d advise you to save some energy for a round of darts—basically the lovechild of a game and a good excuse to chat with Rachel behind the bar. And with drinks just over $5 a pop, it’s hard not to find yourself wishing you were at Smedley’s instead of some trendy spot.
KITCHEN at Re:bar
$ | (216) 465-4268 | WEBSITE
KITCHEN at Re:bar is an artistic space, through and through. But their bar seems to have missed the memo, which means that in addition to amazing food, you’ll also be able to order things like lemon pepper wings, smoked honey BBQ wings, and a signature espresso martini made with D’usse that will probably creep into your dreams somehow. And all of it is available whether you’re grabbing a quick bite before a game, or wrapping up a relaxing evening with friends in Downtown Cleveland.
Pounders Bar & Grill
$ | (440) 887-0185 | WEBSITE
Pounders Bar & Grill is one of those rare sports bars in Cleveland where the kitchen stays open until 1:30am every night of the year. The wings are all solid—not anything worth seeking out on their own, but great at the end of the night when you just need some Thai Chili Garlic wings or garlic Parmesan wings to get you to the next morning. Plus, this is one of the few places in town where you can order a Bacardi lemon with Diet Coke at 1am on Christmas Eve.
16-Bit Bar+Arcade
$ | (216) 340-0090 | WEBSITE
Tucked into a bustling Cleveland neighborhood, 16-Bit Bar+Arcade is where to head when you want some late-night fun but aren’t quite ready to call it a night. On weekends, you’ll find a lively crowd and a line of people waiting for their turn at the free ring toss and Jenga, alongside the paid pinball and duck pin bowling games.
Grab a drink from Luke, who’s quick with suggestions, and as many rounds of games as you can handle (they’re pretty addictive), then find a spot at one of the long rows of arcade cabinets. The parking can be a bit tricky here and feels more like a hopeful search than a guaranteed spot, but most nights the place stays open late, welcoming everyone from friends to families—and even dogs like Loki the Basenji.
Barley House
$$ | (216) 623-1700 | WEBSITE
We’ve raved about the lively atmosphere, the friendly service, and the delicious pub fare at Barley House, and yet the best thing about it is they’re open for both daytime gatherings and nighttime celebrations. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s conveniently located in Cleveland’s popular sports-watching hub—in case you want a cold beer to go with the game.
Wild Eagle Saloon Downtown Cleveland
$$ | (216) 465-3225 | WEBSITE
Wild Eagle Saloon Downtown Cleveland is essentially a party venue that serves fantastic food with exceptional service. It’s that good kind of lively in here—your ears might take a few minutes to adjust. You’ll probably spend that time checking out the mini bowling, arcade games, or self-serve beer machines anyway because the ‘secret’ that is Wild Eagle’s fun atmosphere and accommodating bartenders is out.
When you inevitably find yourself planning a birthday celebration or group gathering, head here for some entertainment.
Ledger Bar
$$ | (216) 239-1200 | WEBSITE
If you’ve ever walked through the Metropolitan at the 9’s Hotel lobby after work, you’ve probably noticed the balcony overlooking the bustling space below. And part of that is the constant flow of people heading to various establishments. But the real gem is up on that balcony—Ledger Bar, a cozy spot that doesn’t even have a formal drink menu until you ask.
All the classic cocktails are covered here, but the custom creations—crafted based on your flavor preferences—are the reason to keep coming back. Grab a seat at one of the two-person tables along the railing after making your way up (it’s very accessible) and get comfortable. The atmosphere is laid-back most evenings, and occasionally you can order food from the Centro restaurant downstairs.
Patron Saint Cafe + Bar
$ | WEBSITE
The Patron Saint Cafe + Bar sits in a bustling neighborhood, and more often than not you’ll spot cyclists pulling up to refuel after a ride or friends gathering for a casual bite. The menu offers a tempting array of fresh, flavorful options, but vegetarian dishes are where Patron Saint truly excels. I find myself returning for the beet and farro salad—a vibrant mix of earthy beets, nutty farro, and crisp greens that hits all the right notes for a light yet satisfying meal.
And if you’re looking to linger over something sweet, the olive oil cake is available all day long.
The South Side
$$ | (216) 937-2288 | WEBSITE
Tucked away in the Tremont neighborhood, The South Side is a lively, reliable spot for a great meal after exploring the area. There are standout dishes like the sun-dried tomato chicken sandwich and Brussels sprouts, plus a diverse menu of delicious nachos, well-prepared burgers, and other items not commonly found at a bar, all served until late with an extended Happy Hour.
That means you have plenty of time to grab a seat at the long curved granite bar, challenge friends to ping pong, and end your visit on a high note with a friendly server like Jules making sure everything’s perfect.
Happy Dog
$ | (216) 651-9474 | WEBSITE
Happy Dog is probably the only spot in Cleveland where you can find a kielbasa dog with black truffle mustard, sauerkraut, and pineapple chunks when the craving strikes at midnight. The topping options are endless here, and cover just about every combination we can think of, but if you’re unsure where to start, we’re big fans of the vegetarian dogs and loaded tater tots here.
At the end, make sure to order another round of drinks—there’s a local craft beer selection that you won’t find anywhere else in the neighborhood.
Bleachers Sports Grill
$ | (440) 888-8900 | WEBSITE
Bleachers Sports Grill is open until 2am most nights, so when the late-night craving for hanky pankies or a Chipotle Chicken wrap hits, you don’t have to settle for the frozen pizza hiding in the back of your freezer. The menu features a mix of American sports bar classics, plus a handful of wraps and a dedicated section for things cooked on the grill.
And there’s a full bar where you can get everything from $5 domestic drafts to a house margarita that we only recommend if you really enjoy the taste of lime with your trivia night.
Grille 55 Downtown
Grille 55 Downtown has established itself as one of Cleveland’s premier bar-restaurants, and its energetic atmosphere makes it a prime destination for celebrations. You can enjoy standout dishes like fried green tomatoes and garlic butter mashed potatoes at any visit, or get a comforting classic like their creamy Mac and cheese. Many of the dishes taste fresher and more thoughtfully prepared than your average bar fare, so no one has to feel like they’re settling for a typical night out.
The staff, including the manager, are consistently friendly and attentive, ensuring a welcoming experience from start to finish. However, be prepared for premium drink prices, with some cocktails reaching up to $32, and note that securing reservations can sometimes be a challenge. Despite these points, the overall vibe—fueled by what many call ‘killer’ music—and the highlight-worthy food make Grille 55 Downtown a genuinely enjoyable spot for special occasions.
re:bar
$$ | (216) 465-4268 | WEBSITE
Re:bar is half restaurant, half cocktail lounge, and entirely one of the best ways to spend an evening in Cleveland. The menu focuses on quality over quantity, serving flavorful food and drinks at reasonable prices—think generous portions from the salsa bar and elevated cocktails like the popular Cherry after dark. Or if you don’t feel like sipping something fancy, there are classic mojitos and margaritas that pair perfectly with the lively atmosphere and live music on certain nights.
With its friendly, knowledgeable staff and convenient location near the Guardians stadium, it’s a great spot for happy hour before, during, or after a game.
Red Lantern Japanese Cuisine
$ | (216) 331-5099 | WEBSITE
If you’re craving authentic Japanese food in Cleveland, there’s a good chance you’ll be in search of something truly satisfying. Preferably something super fresh, and maybe a little bit adventurous. That’s where Red Lantern Japanese Cuisine comes into play. It’s open for lunch and dinner daily, and the focus is on traditional dishes, in which the ingredients are sourced carefully and served with artistic presentation.
You can also grab a bowl of their popular Tonkotsu Ramen—rich pork broth with tender noodles—in case you feel like something comforting. And it’s located in a charming space with beautiful Asian-inspired decor, soothing music, and a comfortable atmosphere, in case you’re looking for a dining experience that goes beyond just the food.
