We don’t need to remind you that Fredericksburg is a small town. When locals say “Everything’s just down Main Street,” they must be referring to a Tuesday in 1925 – because in reality, you’ll want to know exactly where to find these gems.
Der Lindenbaum
$$ | (830) 997-9126 | WEBSITE
“But there aren’t any authentic German spots in Fredericksburg.” Raise your hand if you’ve heard one of your out-of-town friends say that. Now put your hand down and take them to Der Lindenbaum. Immediately.
The classic German restaurant in Fredericksburg is still one of the most delightful dining experiences in the entire Hill Country – and the kind of place you wander into at 7:30pm, order a few unadvised schnitzel sandwiches, and watch a cheerful server bring out Black Forest Cake while explaining the unique German potato salad.
Fredericksburg Winery
$$ | (830) 990-8747 | WEBSITE
Fredericksburg Winery pours the best Christmas wine in Texas – and if that’s not enough to get your friend off their couch and head to the Hill Country, it’s a good indication you should cut them out of your life.
Located right on the strip in Fredericksburg, this welcoming winery is by no means the most exclusive spot in town (you can usually walk right in), but the trick is to just head over for a tasting, where the knowledgeable staff will guide you through each pour, and you can take home your own glass. But no matter when you’re there, don’t even think about skipping the German-style Warmwine.
Alamo Springs Café
$ | (830) 990-8004 | WEBSITE
You’ve heard your friend complain about hill country heat and rustic dining spots, but you’re dragging them to Alamo Springs Café anyway, because you know this classic roadside joint will win them over.
Tucked away in a scenic part of the Texas hills, it’d be easy to dismiss this place as just another tourist stop, but Alamo Springs Café is packed mostly with regulars there to relax on the country porch, devour excellent burgers, and only worry about the wait when the cooler actually runs low on drinks.
Yee Haw Saloon
$ | (830) 304-6000 | WEBSITE
Yee Haw Saloon is by no means a hidden gem, but there’s still something about this lively saloon in Fredericksburg that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon the best-kept secret in Texas. Yee Haw’s spacious setup and welcoming, comfortable environment make it the ideal post-adventure destination when everyone is too energized to call it a night. The karaoke, friendly staff, and fair-priced drinks are our usual go-tos, but you really can’t go wrong with anything at this classic Texas spot.
Bonus: They have the most genuine late-night hospitality for large parties.
Serrano Wine
$$ | (805) 792-7694 | WEBSITE
When Serrano Wine opened its doors on Fredericksburg’s east side, it was pouring some of the most interesting local wines around. Fast-forward to today, and this unpretentious neighborhood staple has only gotten better. Whether it’s a bold Texas Tempranillo, a smooth Cabernet Sauvignon with generous pours, or a crisp Viognier we’d happily drink every day, this is the kind of authentic wine experience you can’t really find in chain tasting rooms.
All the more reason to bring your wine-snob friend who only drinks bottles with French labels.
78624 The Bar
$ | (830) 992-3158 | WEBSITE
There is no shortage of cozy bars in Fredericksburg, but if you’re going to take your Hill Country friends to one, make it 78624 The Bar. Located in the heart of downtown, you could walk past this unassuming spot 100 times and write it off as just another tourist trap – but that would be a huge mistake.
Because once inside, you’ll find a comfy-chair-covered heaven with perfectly crafted cocktails, an Aztec coffee drink we’d put up against any in Texas, and quite possibly the friendliest bartenders in the state, too.
Pioneer
$ | (830) 992-3733 | WEBSITE
Sure, your Austin friends have their trendy cocktail lounges, but you’ve got Pioneer, and you’re about to show them why an orange tea shot beats a craft martini any night of the week. This Fredericksburg bar is certainly a scene and, during peak weekend hours, the live music makes it feel more like a concert hall than a neighborhood watering hole, but once the drinks start flowing, even your friend will realize it was worth braving the lively crowd.
Whether it’s the creative paleta shots, the great selection of beers, or the fresh popcorn, these are some of the best bar experiences in town and Pioneer’s only a few blocks from Main Street, so you can walk it all off exploring the local wineries afterward.
Pecan Grove Store
$ | (830) 990-4433 | WEBSITE
Tucked away among the pecan trees in Fredericksburg, Pecan Grove Store might sound like one of those predictable burger joints you’ve visited a dozen times before. It’s not. Yes, this outdoor spot can get crowded (especially during weekend live music and classic car shows), but once you’re settled at one of the picnic tables, you’ll be treated to some of the freshest, most satisfying burgers in the area.
The spacious seating area feels like a cozy backyard gathering from simpler times, and if you want a formal dining experience, you won’t find it – because everything here is about that relaxed, homegrown atmosphere. As far as the actual eating goes, you can certainly stick with the classic Fredricksburger, but you should really try the Gyrger instead.
Just order it with the works (tzatziki, tomato, onion, garlic, and goat cheese), and the amount of hunger you’re willing to satisfy (burgers range from $12 to $18), then spend the rest of your meal enjoying hand-formed patties and seasoned fries dipped in queso.
Red Baron’s
$ | (830) 997-9936 | WEBSITE
For years, Fredericksburg’s bar scene felt dominated by tourist traps, but that changed when I discovered Red Baron’s tucked away from the main drag. The classic dive bars of Texas are some of my favorite haunts, and while the drinks here are exactly what you’d expect from such a spot, it’s the super dive atmosphere that sets it apart. Situated in a no-frills building off the beaten path, you can walk in here alone or with a group and immediately feel at home.
Which is perfect, because whether you’re shooting pool, watching a game on the TVs, or just soaking in the smoky vibe with a cold one from their solid liquor selection, you’re going to want to settle in for the long haul.
Hondo’s On Main
$ | (830) 997-1633 | WEBSITE
Your friend who thinks Fredericksburg only has wineries and antique shops needs to visit Hondo’s On Main. This casual spot right on Main Street has been serving up generous portions of fresh, tasty food in a relaxed atmosphere that pays tribute to local legend Hondo Crouch.
With its self-service ordering system, friendly staff who even offer water for dogs, and an outside patio perfect for enjoying live music during the day, a meal here feels like you’re hanging out at your favorite neighborhood joint. Their menu of delicious sandwiches and burgers only adds to that fact.
Luckenbach Texas
$$ | (830) 997-3224 | WEBSITE
Fredericksburg is one of the most charming towns in the Texas Hill Country, and you could spend all weekend showing your city-slicker friends around the historic district. But if you only have time for one place, make it Luckenbach Texas. This legendary destination is one of the most authentic spots in the entire state, and if you aren’t settled in by sunset, prepare for a parking lot shuffle, because you’re going to be circling for a while.
Once inside though, you’re going to be treated to a night of live music and atmosphere that’s so good even your most cynical friends will struggle to find something to critique.
Friedhelm’s Bavarian Inn Restaurant & Bar
$$ | (830) 997-6300 | WEBSITE
Your cousin from Austin only visits Fredericksburg if there’s a promise of authentic German food and a cold beer. No problem, you’re taking him to Friedhelm’s Bavarian Inn. The restaurant/bar just a few blocks from downtown is one of our favorite evening spots in the Hill Country, complete with a warm tavern atmosphere, German and American beers, and a fantastic menu full of all the hearty dishes you want after a day of exploring.
Start with the Sauerbraten, add on a Schnitzel, and end with our favorite Pumpernickel bread in Texas. If you’re coming for lunch, get the calf liver with onions.
Hidden Hideaway On Main
$ | (830) 307-3411 | WEBSITE
Perhaps due to its tucked-away location on Fredericksburg’s Main Street, Hidden Hideaway On Main is one of the most under-the-radar spots in town. The casual outdoor space is pleasant and lively with live music, they have a great selection of strong drinks, and an amazing Ranger Creek Old Fashioned. Their crunch wrap quesadilla with pinto beans is excellent, but you definitely can’t leave without trying the fried pork chop sandwich: a juicy cutlet on a soft bun with crispy onion rings.
Hidden Hideaway is the kind of neighborhood spot where you begin your evening – then end up staying until the kitchen closes around 10:30.
EZ PZ Pizza
$ | (830) 900-3979 | WEBSITE
You know the only way you’re going to get your friend to drive from Llano to Fredericksburg is to promise something they can’t get back home. Head to EZ PZ Pizza. The veteran-owned pizza spot serves some of the best pies in town, bringing its perfect crust, loaded toppings like Canadian bacon with pineapple and dill pickle, and unique creations like the jalapeño popper stuffed crust to an area that needed some drive-worthy pizza. Maybe you’re next, Llano.
Western Edge Kitchen & Cocktails
$ | (830) 992-3157 | WEBSITE
The one thing folks in Fredericksburg never want to talk about is just how dull the late-night scene can get. So be sure to rub that fact in your friend’s face by taking them to Western Edge Kitchen & Cocktails. The classic live music spot has plenty of space for large groups, but there’s still something special about grabbing a table near the stage in the main room.
You can certainly order a salad here—the Mediterranean with chicken or the standout Salmon salad—but to be honest, we’ve never even looked at those things. You’re here for the cocktails, which aren’t exactly cheap—they run about $14–$18 each—but considering the quality of drinks like the ‘alright alright alright’ and the cucumber martini, you won’t hear much complaining from your friend.
The Bourbon Bread Pudding is a must-try to cap off the night, and even if service can be hit-or-miss at times, the lively atmosphere and quick food make it a memorable stop.
