Bagel Bin Deli

You shouldn’t dwell on past breakfast spots, unless that past spot is a deli and not some trendy cafe that served you a $22 avocado toast while playing acoustic covers of songs you didn’t like the first time. So let Bagel Bin Deli back into your life. The Revere breakfast institution has returned after being shuttered by that big disaster. It’s more or less the same. There’s still that friendly service giving you an excuse to get a little comfort food in.
And the renovated dining area is still a wonderful place to grab a seat and start your day with a meal that will hopefully be a lot better to you than whatever you’ve been settling for.
Omelette Headquarters

We’re not sure if it was TripAdvisor, but we read somewhere that an effective way of dealing with a rough morning is by surrounding yourself with friendly faces, good coffee, and breakfast classics. You can get all of that at Omelette Headquarters. The Wakefield spot is run by a welcoming group of waitresses and cooks with a passion for hosting people who are looking for a cozy morning out (a rare thing in this town).
They serve up Western omelettes, ham and pancakes, French toast, and chocolate chip pancakes. But even on days when there’s nothing in particular going on, Omelette Headquarters is still a safe bet for a serotonin-boosting meal with a no-frills ambiance and people who aren’t hellbent on rushing you out the door. The old train station photos on the walls and the reasonable wait times make it feel like a homey spot worth returning to, with fair prices that won’t ruin your budget.
Mike & Patty’s Jamaica Plain

You watched your friend patiently wait in a long line after a rough morning. They deserve to be comforted, which is why you’re taking them to Mike & Patty’s. Unlike a rushed breakfast, Mike & Patty’s knows how to comfort and take care of people. You don’t have to lift a finger for your breakfast sandwich—and they won’t let you. All of the egg cooking and assembly is done for you. They toast the sourdough and layer everything perfectly.
There’s something comforting about it, in a nostalgic sort of way.
Richy’s

Instead of accepting your friend’s invite to another overpriced brunch spot with a two-hour wait, propose an early morning visit to Richy’s in Hyde Park. You can finally enjoy a proper breakfast and they will get the validation they need from the courteous staff who remember regulars by name. While slightly unconventional with just a couple of seats at the bar, it’s also a great place to meet someone—specifically someone ordering the pastrami Sammy.
Because they can have questionable taste in many things, but at least they appreciate a classic neighborhood institution that’s been serving since 1954.
Silver Slipper Restaurant

Whoever created the concept behind the Silver Slipper must have just woken up from the perfect breakfast dream. This place exists for the sole purpose of starting your day right. From morning until early afternoon, the Roxbury breakfast spot turns into a massive gathering dedicated exclusively to pancakes, eggs, grits, and bacon that speak to anyone who’s ever craved a real homemade meal.
The experience is like coming home—only way more delicious because excellent coffee, friendly service, and perfectly toasted bread are involved. Oddly enough, this isn’t the only place to engage in soul food breakfast (that’s what we’re calling it). You can find similar spots in Somerville, but the Silver Slipper is more consistent.
Magnificent Muffin & Bagel Teele Sq

There’s that saying about finding comfort in the simple things after life gets complicated. Taking a morning with a heavy heart to Magnificent Muffin & Bagel is a little like that. Sure, you could swing by for a reasonably quick coffee and muffin during off-peak hours. But we’d suggest going on a Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and nudging yourself right into that cozy crush of regulars shuffling all around each other by the counter.
Most of them are probably locals, at least one coffee in, and definitely friendly (but no promises on personal space there). That, plus a strong iced coffee with an extra shot of espresso, is the kind of morning therapy you need.
The James Blake House 1661
Unlike other historical sites around Somerville, The James Blake House 1661 is open only on the third Sunday of every month. So even if your history buff friend gets inspired on a random Tuesday, you’ll have to wait weeks to drag their eager self to this beautiful property with green space. Wander through the rooms that don’t quite resemble their historical past for the best shot at feeling like an intruder rather than a participant. On visiting days, it’s quiet.
At the very least, your historically-minded friend will find the sight of the on-site caretaker going about their business (free admission in hand) quite underwhelming.
Thornton’s Boston Breakfast & Lunch Restaurant

There are tons of distractions for a hungry soul here. It’s a no-pressure spot where friends can swing by for a few plates of shakshouka to savor that authentic Mediterranean flavor for the 100th time. It’s also perfect for sipping coffee silently and watching cheerful staff members buzz by. If you stay long enough on a Saturday morning, you’ll probably end up sharing a table with a bunch of regulars.
Witnessing those sweet, satisfied faces argue over the last light pancake is all it’ll take to put things in perspective and realize that breakfast could hardly be better.

If you’re looking for a reliable breakfast that won’t disappoint, grab a seat at the counter. Deli One is affordable, located in Somerville, and unapologetically straightforward. Obviously, not a destination for everyone. But for early risers, it might be worth it to have the friendly staff banter with you about the morning rush (if it means you get your ham and eggs quickly).
Even if the conversation doesn’t go beyond small talk, at least you get dependable food and a fun atmosphere thanks to the staff who keep things lively.
The Magnificent Muffin & Bagel Shoppe
