In Cleveland, Barrister’s Deli has been the definition of effortless comfort since it opened. It’s an easygoing place to sample monster-sized sandwiches before committing to a full meal. At this Cleveland spot, the beers on tap are predominantly from Germany and local breweries, and a food menu revolves around schnitzels, sausages, and exceptional little bites of fried sauerkraut. Stop by, take a seat on a wooden bench, give a few German specialties your full attention, then drink some interesting beer from a sturdy stein. There’s a big bar near the open kitchen for when you can’t snag a table. You can assume that will be often.
Good Olde Daze

Specializing in great-priced drinks, Good Olde Daze is a truly excellent neighborhood bar in Cleveland. The interior is cozy but small, and there’s a nice front patio perfect for summer nights. This isn’t the kind of place where you meet up with your colleague who wants to talk shop. This is the kind of place where you come with people you really like (or for a casual hangout) on a night when you don’t need to rush.
It’s comfortable, it’s welcoming, and it’s reasonably priced, so you won’t be horrified by your two-hour tab.
Charlie’s Dog House Diner

This small, cozy restaurant has homemade food that feels like a warm hug, with the corned beef hash being possibly the best you’ve ever had, and breakfast items like eggs and sausage cooked just right. The friendly staff, including the woman behind the counter, is always happy to chat while serving up plates that taste like home.
You could also have a great time just sitting at a booth with a friend, enjoying the cheerful atmosphere, and grabbing a quick bite from their flexible dine-in or takeout options.

Grabbing a burger at this Cleveland spot feels like crashing the best backyard cookout thrown by a crew of grill masters who know their way around a flat-top. Try to snag a stool at the counter facing the kitchen. It’s the spot with the clearest view of the smash burgers hitting the griddle and the fries getting their final shake of seasoning. The menu is straightforward and focused, and you can get a seriously satisfying meal for well under $15.
Even though the setup is simple, the flavor is the main event. We especially love their signature smash burger and those perfectly spiced Cajun fries.

This Gordon Square spot is more reliably satisfying than flashy; its most distinctive feature might be the overnight-soaked fries that achieve perfect crispness. But the burgers are tender, the sandwiches creative, and the place is run with obvious local pride, which shows in the fresh ingredients and generous portions.
Behind the casual counter, the kitchen uses quality components to craft hearty dishes that keep customers coming back: a Cubano with perfectly cooked pork and ham, a salmon burger with excellent tzatziki, a chicken Caesar salad with light vinaigrette. The daily rotating soups, like the savory potato, often become regulars’ favorites.
B Spot

B Spot is a lively stadium-adjacent spot with a deceptively spacious layout that’s more expansive than it initially appears. The extensive burger menu features primarily classic American preparations, with about a dozen creative variations available, and most importantly, they offer some of our favorite game-day specials during every home event. There’s a solid selection of mostly casual pub fare, but ordering a multi-course dinner here misses the point.
Stick to the burgers and the stadium views, and you’ll be thoroughly satisfied. They also have additional locations throughout the Cleveland area.

The quality of the burgers at this Cleveland spot is so reliable, we routinely order two rounds of their fresh Whoppers. The clean, well-lit dining area is spacious enough for a full family meal, should you choose to follow your cheesy tots and I Wanna Be Junior Whoppers with a classic flame-grilled burger. Throughout it, there’s a friendly, hardworking staff like Sandy and Eddie.
You’ll find a straightforward menu of solid fast-food options and combos, but if you want to enjoy the complete experience of prompt service and consistent quality, just visit before their 8 pm closing time.

There’s no wrong way to enjoy Nak’s Eatery & Drinkery, a quiet, laid-back eatery that functions as the neighborhood’s go-to comfort zone and default weeknight refuge.
The burger lineup is delicious, there are plenty of fresh options like the chicken dumpling soup, and the menu has satisfying staples like mushrooms and potato skins.
Five Guys

A good deal of burger eating happens in strip mall parking lots, usually involving some combination of a drive-thru and a paper bag. At Five Guys, things are a little more deliberate, although grabbing a meal here does feel a bit like treating yourself. The menu includes plenty of cheeseburgers around $15 and meals under $50, and there’s also a lettuce wrap option.
You can enjoy your loaded burger in a clean dining area or with complimentary peanuts while you wait in a space that we’d describe as reliably satisfying.

But if you’re looking for a welcoming place where you can bring the whole family in Cleveland, this one is worth checking out—especially if you’re a pizza lover who wants to talk to other pizza lovers. You’ll feel a little like you’re eating in your neighbor’s cozy kitchen, but the atmosphere is also oddly relaxed, maybe because of the friendly chatter.
You can get solid food here, too, including the Godzilla Calzone.
Luxe Kitchen & Lounge

Luxe Kitchen & Lounge’s large, beautifully designed patio is its main draw in summer, but even in the winter the welcoming indoor atmosphere with its unique design is great for a celebration or a casual catch-up with friends who like refreshing cocktails and flavorful dishes.
(There’s a large and inviting patio right at the heart of the space.) On the attentive and friendly service there’s a smooth experience with all of the evening’s options—they usually do one or two of each of the chorizo benedict, short rib omelette, wings, summer chicken, and smash burger, and most of the dishes are $20 or under.
Luxe Kitchen doesn’t do an extensive brunch selection, but they host frequent special events, so keep an eye on their schedule, and then go pair your glass of cocktail with some delicious food.
Dina’s Pizza & Pub

Dina’s Pizza & Pub is a west side Cleveland spot, but not the quiet or formal kind. The layout is cozy with a unique bar setup, the atmosphere is welcoming, and there’s plenty of room for groups. Come with some friends and get your casual dinner started here. Or maybe just sit at the bar and eat Buffalo chicken pizza by yourself. The next time you’re hanging out on Cleveland’s west side and you need a not-boring place to grab a drink or watch a game, keep Dina’s in mind.

BrewDog Cleveland Outpost

The team behind BrewDog Cleveland Outpost also runs breweries, in addition to operating the beer programs at various spots across the region. So it shouldn’t be surprising that this riverside location has a selection of craft beers and ciders that reads like a beer lover’s ultimate weekend wishlist. It offers some limited-edition brews and celebrated local producers, as well as plenty of approachable options under $10, with flights available for sampling before you commit.
There’s no formal dining room here, but the spacious indoor area features pinball machines, shuffleboard, and plenty of seating, while the outdoor lawn has corn hole boards and heaters for colder weather. If you’re looking for a fun, relaxed place to drink by the river in Cleveland, this is it. Both the indoor and outdoor spaces have some great elevated bar food options.
