The chicken dinner is a culinary tradition that has earned its place at American tables for generations. And when surveying Brentwood’s vibrant scene, there are many factors to consider—crispy skin texture, juicy tenderness, seasoning balance, and ability to evoke memories of family gatherings and Sunday suppers. But the ultimate question remains: Does it truly satisfy? We sampled poultry perfection from Brentwood’s top spots to help narrow down your options.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
$ | (925) 755-9999 | WEBSITE
Not to worry, chicken lovers—Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen made the list. With a fried chicken behemoth so iconic it’s literally called the “$2.99 leg and thigh special,” we can’t help but adore the thing. Whether grabbed fresh from the hot counter or via drive-thru bag of crispy hunks, there’s a satisfying onslaught of juicy meat, a crispy coating, spicy seasoning, and crunchy bits across the skin, available at this Brentwood location. Long live the special.
Krispy Krunchy Chicken
$ | (925) 754-0389 | WEBSITE
Sure, this fried chicken spot inside a gas station is called Krispy Krunchy Chicken, but we’d like to submit their 8-piece dark box for fried chicken hall of fame consideration, too. (Ball’s in your court, Colonel.) The chicken is so moist that it registers as juicy, with an even crisp between the golden-brown coating and tender meat—and there’s a distinct flavor that nearly tastes like Popeyes, but with a little less cajun kick.
We can’t think of a better meal after grabbing gas than inhaling 12 pieces of dark meat for under twenty bucks.
Angry Chickz – Brentwood
$ | (925) 684-7946 | WEBSITE
We’re not surprised that the folks behind the best chicken sandwiches in town also produce a phenomenal mac and cheese bowl. The signature side dish at Angry Chickz is almost a carbon copy of the classic comfort food. In other words, it’s the platonic ideal of a mac and cheese bowl, with a texture that’s equally as creamy as it is hearty, and tender chicken pieces that do their job adequately without making it all about them (those selfish divas).
Dave’s Hot Chicken
$ | (925) 306-4380 | WEBSITE
In the spicy chicken universe, extra hot is king. But Dave’s Hot Chicken’s milder options prove that we don’t need it. Their popular extra hot chicken has a clean pepper-backed heat, along with a satisfying burn that lingers like a warm embrace. (Thank you, Nini.)
KFC
$ | (925) 634-4178 | WEBSITE
Thoroughly shabby interior and the presence of enough missing items to be a fast-food ghost town would typically book any chicken joint a one-way ticket to the avoid list. But KFC’s gloriously reliable chicken is the exception to the rule. The way this crispy classic balances fresh hot burgers, crispy fries, and a heavy hand of cheerful service gets us on board with its cold mashed potatoes quickly—and even makes us want to host a chicken convention and invite them as the keynote speakers.
Their chat would touch on disrupting expectations, of course.
Jollibee
$ | (925) 233-3600 | WEBSITE
Jollibee is a stellar Filipino-inspired spot. But after the crispy, juicy chicken has been demolished, the peach mango pies make for a pristine conclusion. The juxtaposition of golden, flaky crust and sweet, gooey filling is legitimately cravable, and of course, there’s that signature Jollibee sauce for good measure. It may be tempting to devour warm, but we actually like it when things firm up a bit after a rest on the counter.
JJ Fish and Chicken
$ | (925) 775-4744 | WEBSITE
Regardless of how you feel about fried chicken in a fish restaurant, JJ Fish and Chicken’s is a stellar example. At first glance, things progress as expected—with perfectly cooked catfish, crispy chicken pieces, generous portions that come automatically with fries and bread, and loads of flavorful seasoning that have pooled in some parts and crisped in others.
The result is a savory, satisfying little combo that would perform beautifully as part of a family dinner among the kid-friendly options and banana pudding.
