Technically, there are no ‘authentic’ Chinese restaurants in Midland, TX—not by Beijing standards, anyway. But we do have a bunch of spots serving up everything from fiery Szechuan to comforting dim sum. Are they all perfect? Kind of. Are they worth trying? As long as the drive-thru line isn’t wrapped around the building, then yes. If you’re craving noodles that taste like a discovery, here’s where to start. We promise, not all of these spots are General Tso’s themed.
Kuo’s Chinese Restaurant
$ | (432) 697-8888 | WEBSITE
One of the more established spots on this list, Kuo’s Chinese Restaurant in Midland is so committed to its peaceful dining theme that they actually keep the lighting soft and the background music mellow, never mind all the steaming plates and bustling kitchen. Despite the gentle atmosphere, it’s bright enough to appreciate the food in this cozy spot, with a steady hum of satisfied chatter, and comfortable booths for seating.
The lunch portions are generous and flavorful, tending towards saucy and satisfying. This restaurant is known for its quick service, and it’s a good spot to grab a reliable meal during the day, or to enjoy a hearty dish like the garlic chicken after work.
Little Hunan
$ | (432) 262-2223 | WEBSITE
If you turn into the unassuming strip mall off Midland Drive, you’ll discover a cheerful spot with red lanterns and bamboo accents called Little Hunan. At this Chinese restaurant, you can slide into a booth and savor some combination fried rice, or gather at a round table and share pork spare ribs with charsui.
There’s a generous menu with appetizers like egg rolls and egg drop soup, plus main dishes such as Hunan chicken and orange chicken, although you don’t necessarily have to order a full feast here. Make it part of your weekly routine, and stop by for lunch if you appreciate wonderful prices for generous portions.
Kungfu China Express
$ | (432) 247-1612 | WEBSITE
Kungfu China Express unapologetically commits to the express Chinese food theme. Tucked into a small strip mall in Midland, the space is filled with bright fluorescent lights and simple laminate tables, and it’s full of families and takeout orders where people tend to forget they’re eating fast food. All of the staff wear friendly smiles, generous portions provide most of the value, and the menu consists of classic American-Chinese dishes such as bourbon chicken and General Tso’s.
It’s all a little basic, but it works. Bring some hungry kids or someone you’re feeding on a budget, and try the bourbon chicken.
Szechuan House
$ | (432) 247-1636 | WEBSITE
When people talk about Szechuan House, they tend to call it “that one Chinese spot in Midland with the incredible food.” So even if you aren’t familiar with the name, you’ve probably heard of this place. Along with a few other local favorites, it was one of those restaurants that helped normalize the idea of authentic Szechuan cuisine in the area, and nowadays, it mostly just feels like a laid-back family restaurant that just happens to serve exceptional dishes.
The food is fresh and bursting with flavor, and there are plenty of tables for groups.
Moon Garden
$ | (432) 570-1165 | WEBSITE
From the people behind some of Midland’s favorite spots, Moon Garden is a quiet, unassuming Chinese restaurant tucked away in a simple strip mall. It’s always pretty calm, but if you need an easy way to satisfy a craving for generous portions and bold flavors, it’ll get the job done. Getting a table will be easy, but just settle into the straightforward dining room until the efficient servers bring out the standout PaoPao platter or Orange shrimp plate.
Famous Asain Grill
$ | WEBSITE
Famous Asian Grill is a Chinese restaurant that has been operating in Midland for several years. It receives mixed reactions, but we prefer it because the chicken is consistently the best item on the menu. The entrance on the main street is straightforward, although it isn’t fancy, because there’s usually a server inside who will greet you promptly. Located in a simple storefront, the dining room looks like a casual neighborhood spot populated by locals grabbing takeout.
Make sure to try the chicken dishes that deliver satisfying flavor, though other items like the dumplings can be disappointingly inconsistent.
Volcano Sushi and Asian Fusion
$ | (432) 704-5588 | WEBSITE
Volcano Sushi and Asian Fusion is a cozy Chinese restaurant tucked away in Midland, offering a welcoming atmosphere and affordable prices. You step inside to find a clean, inviting space with simple, modern décor, and it’s a pleasant, low-key place to sit with a date or for a business lunch. The sushi is praised for its quality and well-balanced flavors, even in simple rolls, and vegan options are impressively delicious.
Recent visitors have enjoyed dishes like crab rangoon, soft shell crab appetizers, wonton soup, eel sushi, tamago sushi, and pineapple fried rice with chicken and beef. The attentive and friendly staff provide excellent service, with fast turnaround from order to food delivery, making it ideal for quick meals. Many look forward to returning and exploring more of the menu in future visits.
Chinese Dumpling
$ | (432) 247-1686 | WEBSITE
In this town, we have plenty of options, including chain Chinese spots. Unlike Panda Express, Chinese Dumpling—which sits in a modest strip mall off the main road—embraces its cozy, unassuming setting, with warm lighting and simple wooden tables throughout. The next time you’re in Midland and crave something more genuine than the buffet at the mall, swing by and enjoy some classic Chinese tunes while you savor pan-fried dumplings with a side of chicken fried rice.
Sun Wok
$ | (432) 218-7858 | WEBSITE
The most reliable Chinese spot on this list, Sun Wok remains one of the best places to grab take-out in Midland. It’s not as fancy as nearby sit-down restaurants, and, somehow, it still kind of feels like a hidden gem. Through a simple storefront on a busy street, you’ll find a no-frills space with a straightforward carry-out focus.
The staff wear casual uniforms and are friendly enough to make you feel like a regular, but this isn’t a formal place, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything more than what it is. Order the Sweet & Sour Chicken, and call ahead if you don’t want to wait during the dinner rush.
Great Wall
$ | (432) 694-5555 | WEBSITE
Some of these Chinese spots are hard to find. Great Wall is not, because there are always cars in the parking lot waiting for takeout. A Midland classic with a generous portion pedigree, this place is small, popular, and annoyingly difficult to get into during peak hours. You can’t make a reservation, but after you place your order with one of the couple of workers, you’ll receive your food surprisingly fast.
Once you make it inside of the cozy space that feels at least a decade familiar, the staff will treat you like family. There’s no official menu beyond the basics, but they’ll make sure you get more food than other places for the same price, and that food will be fresh and flavorful.
