Newport boasts a dizzying array of drinking dens. Historic taverns, sleek lounges, hotel bars, and more. But you’re not here for a catalog of every spot that pours a drink. You’re here for the places where the cocktail itself is the main event—where each sip is a revelation, crafted with precision and served in spaces worthy of the artistry. Behold, the establishments where the drink in your hand is the star of the evening.
Wharf Fishhouse & Tiki Bar
$$ | (401) 324-5377 | WEBSITE
The upstairs bathroom at Wharf Fishhouse & Tiki Bar comes to mind every time we want to sip a cocktail with a harbor view in the summer, and also at least once in November, when trying to ignore the inevitable return of winter hibernation. In addition to serving fun cocktails, they pour Samurai lager beer and strong drinks, as well as happy hour oysters that you can make a two-dozen for $18.
(In other words, a teeny tiki mug could be in your future.) When you get hungry, order some pork ribs, mussels with curry sauce, or maybe seafood chowder with a side of fries.
Surf Club
$$ | (401) 619-5701 | WEBSITE
Newport’s marinas can sometimes feel like a parade of tourist crowds. And part of the charm of this restaurant’s patio is that you get front-row seats to the waterfront scene, while sipping a refreshing, potentially inventive cocktail. Even if you know next to nothing about mixology, the focused selection of drinks and friendly staff will help you find something delightful without breaking the bank—most of the cocktails cost $14-$18.
The Dining Room at The Vanderbilt
$$ | (401) 846-6200 | WEBSITE
Think of The Dining Room at The Vanderbilt as a grown-up Newport classic. Just like those historic spots, there’s a lovely outdoor garden, but the seating is actually comfortable, and it’s perfect for special occasions. Sip on a $15 Vanderbilt Martini during Martini Mondays before your meal, or go for the smoked haddock croquettes and clam chowder off the fresh menu. They also host Martini Mondays in the cozy dining room, so keep an eye on their schedule for upcoming evenings.
Stoneacre Brasserie
$$$ | (401) 619-7810 | WEBSITE
Stoneacre Brasserie serves a lot of delightful food, specifically the praised lobster ravioli and eggs Benedict. It’s a great place to bring anyone who appreciates excellent service, and even if you don’t really care about the different flavor notes in swordfish starters or tender short ribs, you’ll at least appreciate the charming bar and inviting outdoor seating.
Caleb & Broad
$$ | (401) 619-5955 | WEBSITE
The casual, welcoming vibe at Caleb & Broad in Newport feels like one of those reliable neighborhood spots you wish were on every corner. It has affordable options and high-end choices, and it’s perfect for when you want a relaxed meal alone or share a table with friends for the evening. On promotional days, main entrees drop to just $12, but you can also explore their well-crafted drinks and diverse menu in the laid-back space.
They even offer a special treat for four-legged guests—a “pup cup” that furry companions adore.
Top of Newport Bar + Kitchen
$$ | (401) 847-3300 | WEBSITE
Perched atop a rooftop with sweeping views of Newport Harbor, this elevated bar is the perfect setting for a crisp gin martini or a vibrant sunset margarita. It’s an ideal spot for pre- or post-dinner drinks in the area, but also keep it in mind if you’re looking for somewhere to relax and watch the sunset.
If you’re lucky enough to catch the live music, settle into one of the comfortable lounge chairs and enjoy the atmosphere, though be prepared for potential delays with drink orders due to staffing shortages.
Newport Sportsman Club
$ | (401) 619-1280 | WEBSITE
This friendly locals’ bar has plenty of seating inside and out, with a casual atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. It’s a solid spot to grab a bourbon or a beer in the $8-12 range. Plus, there’s live music and a pool table, which adds to the laid-back vibe. You’ll find the staff and owners welcoming, and they sometimes have BBQ or can arrange for pizza delivery if you’re hungry.
Mother Pizzeria
$$ | (401) 324-5500 | WEBSITE
This family-friendly pizzeria-by-day and cocktail-bar-by-night is home to its own artisan-style pizza, where the chewy, Neapolitan crust gets a nice crisp while staying soft and light. That means you’ll go from sharing the simple Margherita as a baseline to digging into the top-recommended Big Papa pizza—and you’ll do it in their modern, bright, and happy atmosphere, sipping local beers, wine, or cocktails with impeccable service.
The pickled calamari brings plenty of heat as a rewarding snack, and though parking in back is ample, it stays busy, so plan ahead.
The Grill
$$$ | (401) 846-8012 | WEBSITE
The Grill sits right by the harbor and shares that romantic, special-occasion vibe with other waterfront spots, but it focuses on steak and seafood rather than casual fare. Their white sangria—a crisp blend of wine, fruit, and a hint of citrus—is sure to put you in a relaxed, celebratory mood. Especially when you sip one while taking in those mesmerizing harbor views from their cozy dining room.
Yagi Noodles
$$ | (401) 324-5098 | WEBSITE
When the weather’s nice, Yagi Noodles sets up their outdoor seating for people looking to slurp some ramen. We are those people. The noodles aren’t too pricey, and the upbeat music speaks for itself.
Clarke Cooke House
$$$ | (401) 849-2900 | WEBSITE
We love Clarke Cooke House both for its excellent classic Newport atmosphere—one bowl of that clam chowder, please—and for its very good dining experience. There’s a sophisticated ambiance inside the restaurant, which also opens onto a traditional Newport setting filled with plenty of attentive service. It’s here that you’ll find a seasonal scallop special of remarkable quality, which seafood lovers, vegetarians, and burger fans alike all enjoy ordering, for every particular reason.
(Compelled by the fresh, flavorful ingredients and impeccable service? Absolutely.)
The Regent Lounge & Firepit
$$$ | (401) 849-2600 | WEBSITE
This waterfront lounge in Newport feels like a spot you’d discover tucked away with a perfect view. It’s a great place to unwind with friends on a spacious patio with firepit seating, and they serve brunch favorites like Cacio e Pepe and tiramisu. They also go all out with the stunning backdrop of the Newport Bridge and ocean—check out their Instagram to see when the sunset lights up the sky. It’s heated and covered in cool weather, so it’s comfortable year-round.
Giusto
$$$ | (401) 324-7400 | WEBSITE
Giusto isn’t the only restaurant with harbor views in Newport, but it’s probably the only one where you won’t feel rushed or leave with a headache. The cozy indoor-outdoor Italian spot comes from a team known for top-notch modern cuisine and an exceptional bar program. Get a creative cocktail or a glass of wine and some squid ink calamari.
Cluck House
$ | (401) 399-7845 | WEBSITE
The patio at Cluck House offers a pleasant spot to enjoy a casual meal, and it’s a good place to unwind after exploring Newport or when you just want some straightforward comfort food. Bring friends here for a quick bite, or stop by when you’re craving something satisfying that won’t break the bank.
They have a solid menu focused on chicken, with options like the 8-wing snacks and grilled chicken sandwiches, all served with their signature sauces including the unique Cluck Sauce and the Nashville Hot. The house-made pickles add a nice crunch, and the tenders are consistently hot, moist, and tasty. While the coleslaw gets mixed reactions, it works well as a topper for the sandwich. Overall, Cluck House is a great chicken spot, worth a little walk for a delicious and generous meal.
Bar and Board
$$ | (401) 619-1022 | WEBSITE
You know that feeling of finally finding a restaurant with a patio that feels like a secret garden? Possibly one with twinkle lights and cozy seating and multiple floors to explore? Well, if you’ve been searching for that perfect Newport spot (or if you just need an escape from the usual), you can get that feeling on the new outside patio at Bar and Board.
Bring someone who loves cocktails like the Last Bloom or tequila espresso martinis, garlic parm frites that elevate fries to something magical, and getting a little fancy. Their main dining room has that classy atmosphere, too.
Perro Salado
$$ | (401) 619-4777 | WEBSITE
Perro Salado is a charming Mexican-American restaurant set in a classic New England house with cozy seating on multiple floors. They serve plenty of dishes like ribs, queso, guacamole, and entrees such as salmon with corn salsa, lobster quesadillas, and enchiladas, and the margaritas—such as the classic lime and the spicy jalapeño version—are consistently delicious here. Despite being in the heart of Newport, the outdoor seating area feels quiet and residential.
It’s surrounded by weathered wooden fences covered in climbing vines, and there are around 12 tables where you can hang out and enjoy the Sticky Ribs.
Bar 12
$ | (401) 324-7101 | WEBSITE
Bar 12’s speakeasy in downtown Newport is intimate and lively, with small groups enjoying wonderfully unique cocktails and well-thought-out small plates. If that sounds like your kind of night (it very much is our kind of night), get yourself here on a Friday or Saturday evening.
