Alameda is one of the liveliest food towns—not just in the Bay Area, but all of California. Some might dismiss fast food as uninspired, but we couldn’t disagree more. The local chains here serve up some of the crispiest fries in the state, with a surprisingly creative burger and taco scene. Definitely try the secret-menu burritos, double-stacked patties, and as much garlic aioli as possible.
McDonald’s
$ | (510) 865-0200 | WEBSITE
Once you’ve had fries at this McDonald’s, it’ll be pretty difficult to eat them anywhere else (outside of this specific location). This fast-food spot has one of the items that will make it especially hard to go back: those warm, crispy, well-salted fries. Care and patience go into preparing them, which basically acts like the perfect companion to their superior burgers that aren’t greasy or overly salty.
Get some to stay and enjoy them in the clean, welcoming atmosphere where the kind staff won’t rush you out.
Carl’s Jr.
$ | (510) 523-1464 | WEBSITE
Carl’s Jr. in Alameda is one of the best fast-food meals you can get in the Bay Area. They specialize in burgers, and even though that’s more of a thing down south in Los Angeles, these can go toe-to-toe with any they’re serving in the original burger capital. You can taste the perfectly seasoned patties and fresh ingredients in every bite, there’s plenty of juicy Santa Fe chicken, crispy hash browns, and other sides, and a satisfying combo only costs around $12.
Get some waffle fries on the side.
Jack In The Box
$ | (510) 522-8865 | WEBSITE
If you’re looking for a meal somewhere more straightforward than a sit-down restaurant, Jack In The Box is the move. The food is still solid here, but the experience is way more convenient, with 24/7 service, and plenty of burgers to choose from. The vibe is also where late-night cravings and quick lunches come together—everybody’s trying to figure out if the sourdough ham melt is worth the slightly higher price tag.
Hummus Republic
$ | (510) 694-5595 | WEBSITE
Hummus Republic is the kind of place that’s become synonymous with Alameda’s lunch scene. Everybody grabs these Mediterranean-inspired bowls or wraps for a quick, healthy meal. This spot is one of the few where you can customize your own creation with different bases, proteins, and sauces. The options they have stay pretty consistent, but the falafel bowl is particularly good—the portion is huge, and a nice balance to the chickpea croutons and grandma’s sauce you should top it with.
The hummus itself is particularly smooth, and a basic bowl only costs around $12. Come here for a satisfying meal and then get back to your day, especially if you’re grabbing it to-go from their convenient location.
Five Guys
$ | (510) 769-1788 | WEBSITE
When it comes to classic fast food in Alameda, Five Guys is the one to prioritize. It’s a family-friendly burger joint—although it’s really not that hard to find—with nostalgic food that goes beyond the basics. You can customize your burger to your liking, or stick with the classic combination and let tradition decide. The staff is also professional and courteous with your order and the whole experience is a lot of fun.
Some items come with a generous portion size, like the fries and their tasty, plentiful serving, and almost every meal on the menu is under $15. Try and snag a spot outside on the patio seating where it’s a little more spacious.
In-N-Out Burger
$ | (800) 786-1000 | WEBSITE
In-N-Out Burger, a classic fast-food spot in Alameda, serves some of the most satisfying burgers we’ve ever tasted. They take just a few minutes to prepare, involve fresh ingredients and secret sauces, and look like perfectly assembled meals that belong in a fast-food hall of fame. Layers of crisp lettuce and melted cheese stack between juicy patties, creating little masterpieces in each wrapper. The best part: they actually taste incredible.
If you’re in California, it’s worth it just to try the Double Double. It’s best to go during off-peak hours, though, since the lines can get long.
Peppermint Baguette
$ | (510) 995-8717 | WEBSITE
Peppermint Baguette, a Vietnamese restaurant in the heart of Alameda, should be your go-to lunch spot when visiting. The banh mi and Vietnamese snacks are all excellent—the banh mi combo with fresh, crispy bread and flavorful pâté is a must-try sandwich, as are the fried egg rolls that come with a tangy dipping sauce to scoop them all up.
It’s inside a recently fixed-up little space with friendly staff quick to serve, and it really does feel like you’re just snacking on authentic flavors at somebody’s favorite local spot, where they brew the Vietnamese coffee less bitter and quite tasty just for you.

The Mexican-inspired classics here are the thing to prioritize: a Crunchwrap Supreme with seasoned beef, nacho cheese, and sour cream, a Cheesy Gordita Crunch, and more tacos that come in a variety of crispy or soft shells. Even if you’re not in a hurry, it’s a great quick meal move with ample parking and a drive-through option.
So grab your order from the automated terminal, have some tacos and a Baja Blast, and enjoy the modern, spacious atmosphere before you head back on the road.
