Craving that perfect spanakopita but worried you’ll end up with a sad, soggy version? Maybe you’re planning a family dinner where everyone wants something different—one person dreams of flaming saganaki, another just wants a killer gyro. You need a Greek spot that delivers on all fronts. Here are 13 places in Columbia that get it right.
Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe – Columbia
$ | (803) 386-0302 | WEBSITE
Like many spots in its upscale outdoor shopping area, this Mediterranean cafe definitely feels more like a typical fast casual option than a formal restaurant, mainly because the efficient service and relaxed atmosphere dominate the experience. But despite appearances, Taziki’s is definitely a full-on dining destination, with a flavorful menu that includes chicken kabobs, basmati rice, and a beef sandwich that’s really delicious.
In other words, the ‘casual meal’ here can very easily turn into a satisfying feast.
Grecian Gardens
$ | (803) 794-7552 | WEBSITE
Columbia’s Greek dining scene can feel a bit predictable, with places that try too hard to be authentic or festive. This is not the case at Grecian Gardens, a welcoming spot that feels genuinely relaxed. They have a good wine selection, and (if you’re interested) the attentive staff will happily guide you through it.
But there’s also a very satisfying food menu, with options like the highly recommended pizza, delicious blackened salmon with Greek potatoes and green beans, and desserts that are too good to skip. The avgolemono soup was a bit thin, but the owner’s kindness—like offering complimentary bread—makes up for any small missteps.
It’s the kind of place where the servers treat you like family, the portions are big, and the prices are average, perfect for a business lunch or a family dinner with the kids.
George’s Southside Restaurant
$ | (803) 791-1046 | WEBSITE
George’s Southside Restaurant feels like the dining room of a Southern grandmother’s home – it’s bright and welcoming, with comfortable booths around a bustling kitchen. The menu focuses on classic soul food staples, and they also serve solid breakfast options, including biscuits and gravy that only become available until 11am. So in other words, if you make it before lunch, you get a reward.
Zorba’s Greek Restaurant
$ | (803) 772-4617 | WEBSITE
We can’t really decide if we like Zorba’s more for its generous portions or its cozy atmosphere, since it succeeds equally at being both. But it doesn’t matter – either way, this is one of our favorite spots in Columbia. It’s a little casual inside, with warm lighting and family photos that look like they belong in Classic Greek Restaurant Magazine.
But there’s also an interesting menu of great Greek food, ranging from feta dip to Pastitsio to Greek pizza with sausage, pepperoni & black olives – which in no way falls into the “light bites” category, but is delicious nonetheless.
Ariana’s Greek Restaurant
$ | (803) 796-4430 | WEBSITE
If you find yourself in Columbia on a weeknight or weekend, you’re probably there for business or because of an event downtown. Whatever your reason for being in the neighborhood, you probably shouldn’t tackle it hungry or completely sober. Head to Ariana’s Greek Restaurant, a family-owned spot in the heart of the city. This casual place has a warm atmosphere that’s perfect for celebrating with your family or just grabbing a bite after work.
So have some spanakopita, grape leaves, or the fantastic chicken karahi. And start enjoying that homemade tzatziki.
South Congaree House of Pizza
$ | (803) 755-7790 | WEBSITE
Columbia’s food scene gets so hectic that at some spots, you might feel like you’re navigating a crowded stadium just to find a table. South Congaree House of Pizza isn’t one of those places. It’s a family-friendly restaurant in a cozy neighborhood setting, and it maintains a homey atmosphere even when it’s busy. They have a great selection of pizzas, really tasty Italian dishes like spaghetti and lasagna, and a fresh salad bar with various toppings that pairs well with everything.
The chicken parmesan and carrot cake are particularly praised for their delicious taste. It’s an easy place to settle in for a full meal, even when you were just planning on grabbing a quick bite. While some might find it a little pricey, the quality and friendly, efficient service make it worth it.
Nick’s Gyros & Subs
$ | (803) 699-8838 | WEBSITE
It’s up for debate whether Nick’s qualifies as a ‘quick bite’ spot – most of their gyros and platters are substantial (except maybe the fried mushrooms), but they’re definitely fast, so as far as we’re concerned, they count. You’ll also find a bunch of different ‘platters’ (like the shrimp and whiting), plus onion rings that are excellent for sharing with a friend. If it’s Saturday night, be sure to appreciate their quick, friendly service.
Nick’s Gyros and Grill
$ | (803) 772-1666 | WEBSITE
Nick’s Gyros and Grill is a Greek spot that’s good at its straightforward mission, so it doesn’t feel fussy or overcomplicated. The focus is literally “fresh and flavorful,” which means the menu highlights tasty wings with lemon pepper hot sauce, juicy gyros, and well-cooked chicken fingers, with vegetarian options available. The food and service are solid (with quick, helpful staff) and the space is compact, including limited indoor seating but convenient takeout.
It’s a great place for just grabbing a bite, or for different needs, like a la carte deals or standout Philly cheese steak.
Ambrosia Taverna
$$ | (803) 661-8111 | WEBSITE
Ambrosia Taverna is in a great area, and with all the music and lively atmosphere, a lot of people just use it to celebrate. But that’s a mistake – it happens to be a great destination in its own right, with an upscale feel, plenty of local charm, and fantastic Greek cuisine to tide you over while you enjoy the curated tunes. It’ll be a special night out any time you visit, we’re sure.
Mediterranean Tea Room
$ | (803) 799-3118 | WEBSITE
We’re always looking for reasons to visit Mediterranean Tea Room, and one of the many situations it’s perfect for is ordering glasses of wine and Greek small plates at the bar. It’s worth knowing that many of the large plates, like the grilled salmon and lamb dishes, can be made into half orders. Sample a few of the menu’s greatest hits while saving your budget for more wine.
Kairos Mediterranean
$ | (803) 851-4141 | WEBSITE
If you’re one of the many people working in downtown Columbia, you might already be aware of Kairos Mediterranean, the casual Greek spot known for its fresh ingredients. If you’re new to the area thanks to all the recent growth, and don’t know about this place yet, plan to stop by, build your own pita, and enjoy some exceptionally good fries.
Greek Boys
$ | (803) 771-7618 | WEBSITE
It’s 7pm, and you need a buffer of food and comfort before heading back to your apartment, where your neighbor’s dog is still (inexplicably) barking through the thin walls. Head to Greek Boys, an easy-to-get-into neighborhood spot with tasty Greek dishes like meatballs with tangy garlic sauce, creamy pasta with chicken, and crispy falafel plates. It will give you the sustenance you need before asking when, exactly, the parking situation one block off Main Street is going to get less challenging.
Pitas
$ | (803) 343-3454 | WEBSITE
Columbia has plenty of chain restaurants and fast food spots. But if you want something different in the city, you should know about Pitas. This cozy restaurant has a homey setting, warm lighting, and is even relaxed enough inside to make you feel comfortable bringing family or friends. The food menu includes options like falafel wraps, stuffed grape leaves, and veggie wraps – a lot of classics done right.
But the falafels are top tier, and they’ve got some tasty dishes like the veggie wrap (many customers say it’s the best in the world) and daily specials like fresh falafel with homemade salad dressings.
