Somerville’s Greek dining scene has its share of Instagrammable spots—whitewashed walls, blue accents, saganaki flambéed with theatrical flair. But beyond the photogenic appeal and tableside spectacle, where can you find truly exceptional spanakopita, soul-warming avgolemono, and grilled octopus that transports you to the Aegean? We ventured past the aesthetics to uncover the authentic gems worth your appetite.
Desfina Restaurant
$$ | (617) 868-9098 | WEBSITE
Desfina Restaurant was born to transport you. They serve grilled octopus with a perfect smoky char. And nearly everything inside this Somerville spot—from the atmosphere to the complimentary bread and butter—follows a strict Greek taverna rhythm. Chances are you’ve already heard someone raving about Desfina’s crispy bakalao with creamy skordalia. Here’s our take: the place knows how to grill salty sardines and braise tender lamb shanks.
But these dishes will fill you up (most entrees run about $24-$28, though they’re generous). Come with an appetite or risk missing out on their famously big Greek salad with chicken.
Mama’s Place
$ | (617) 566-1300 | WEBSITE
Mama’s Place has been a Somerville staple for years, but locals can’t stop raving about how quick, tasty, and satisfying this spot is. We can confirm that all of the above is true. In about fifteen minutes flat, this casual Greek restaurant serves perfectly cooked gyro meat, clouds of fresh lettuce, and calamari so crispy it practically vanishes like magic. Mama’s Place accepts both walk-ins and takeout orders, and it’s usually easy to grab one of the few bar seats overlooking the street.
Order at the counter and then settle into the light, airy space where regulars in casual wear enjoy Mission Hill pizza on simple stools. It’s really that simple. Add Mama’s Place to your last-minute dinner rotation if you haven’t already.
Gyro City
$ | (617) 903-4248 | WEBSITE
This Greek spot in Somerville might look like it could belong to a chain from the outside, but step inside and you’ll find the genuine warmth of Athens. Expect generous gyro sandwiches piled high with meat and fries, lamb chops that taste like they came straight from the grill, and pita bread that’s truly great.
On weekends, the place fills with locals and visitors who’ve driven hours for the authentic experience, but swing by on a weekday afternoon and you’ll easily snag a table to enjoy the WiFi with your meal. Though you could order a simple Greek salad here, it’d be a shame not to try the ‘choose three’ spread option, which includes unique picks like salmon roe spread alongside the classic hummus.
The staff provides incredibly fast and kind service, making even a quick lunch feel like a proper Mediterranean escape.
KAVA neo-taverna
$$$ | (617) 356-1100 | WEBSITE
KAVA neo-taverna is the rare Greek spot that’ll please anyone who believes dining at authentic tavernas is a surrogate for a personality and people who simply want excellent food. Only about twenty diners can comfortably fit in this Somerville restaurant, but the cozy space is part of the charm. That, and the fact KAVA neo-taverna is tucked in a quiet South End neighborhood, complete with a charming outdoor seating area perfect for warm days.
The real reason there’s so much hype around this place is their standout dishes. Their grilled Sea Bass is praised for its beautiful presentation and flavor. Other combinations are balanced and smart here, like lamb meatballs that get brightened up with lemon potatoes and baklava cheesecake that’s rich from cream cheese without overpowering the pastry. Come with a reservation to avoid a wait, though be prepared for only one bathroom stall.
Opa Greek Yeeros
$ | (617) 581-8863 | WEBSITE
If every family-run spot delivered on its promises, every neighborhood would be a foodie paradise. But that’s not how the world works, and why we expected Opa Greek Yeeros to be another charming but forgettable joint. But we were wrong. This small, cozy restaurant in Somerville makes chicken gyros that are, surprisingly, not too heavy. They’re fresh and flavorful like a Mediterranean breeze, so you can still taste the tangy mustard sauce or spicy feta layered inside.
The veggie pita is also a hit, especially the chicken souvlaki version that’s roughly 80% tender meat and wrapped in a soft, warm flatbread. It’s protein-on-protein, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Trade
$$$ | (617) 451-1234 | WEBSITE
We had high expectations for this upscale Greek spot in Somerville, with its luxurious European ambiance and elegant atmosphere. But after stepping into the energetic dining room, things took a turn for the underwhelming. The beautiful plating feels like a superficial attempt at “fine dining presentation,” with speakers playing generic lounge music while clichéd Mediterranean scenes play on mute behind the marble bar.
And despite its reputation, there are only a few standout dishes on the menu (all overpriced). The grilled calamari is slightly better than the bland shrimp option, but neither are an improvement over the much less expensive versions you’d find at a casual Greek taverna.
Greek Corner Restaurant
$ | (617) 661-5655 | WEBSITE
When Greek Corner Restaurant opened years ago, we were thrilled that authentic Greek flavors had reached Somerville. The peaceful, welcoming restaurant offers flavorful and well-priced meals, with options including gyros, spinach pie, grilled chicken kabobs, hummus, and seafood that work for a satisfying dinner. The gyros are the biggest sellers here, made with tasty lean meat and fresh ingredients that burst with every bite.
There are various mezes and souvlaki on the menu (including seafood options) but for first-timers, we’d suggest the lamb/beef gyro praised for its authentic taste, or the spinach pie with its rich Greek culinary heritage.
Daddy Jones
$$ | (617) 690-9095 | WEBSITE
Somerville has its share of traffic, overpriced coffee that’s somehow still worth it, and Greek spots. Good for them. And now Daddy Jones offers its own take on the cuisine known for gyros and spanakopita. When it comes to visiting this upscale bar-type restaurant, you must ask yourself if a cocktail is worth navigating the cozy patio on a busy summer night. For us, the answer is yes.
That’s why we suggest stopping by on weekdays when the atmosphere is more relaxed and full of families enjoying lemon chicken wings while celebrating birthdays. These creative drinks taste like seasonal magic in a glass. They’re strong yet balanced, with flavors that rotate to keep things interesting. The attentive service adds to the experience, making you want to take the furniture home.
Highlights include the Athena burger with generous fries and the natural bubbly wine that pairs perfectly with fresh salads. It’s a wonderful spot where the friendly staff ensures every date night or celebration feels special, without the need to invent reasons to return.
The Greek Gyro
$ | (857) 991-1000 | WEBSITE
This cozy Greek spot is tucked into a Somerville storefront, and is one of the top-rated authentic gyro joints in the area. The menu is mostly classic chicken and pork gyros, with an option to get them as a platter to share between two people. But since you’ll likely be giving up a few extra dollars for the generous portions anyway, better to get one of the signature falafel gyros.
Demos Watertown
$ | (617) 924-9660 | WEBSITE
Demos Watertown began as a small family spot, but is now a full-time Greek restaurant in Watertown focused on hearty, traditional dishes. The menu stays consistent, but the appeal is always the same: generous portions with bold, authentic flavors. The best options—like the Greek salad loaded with feta and olives or the tender lamb and beef kebabs—balance savory and tangy just right, and often come with warm pita bread or a side of creamy tzaziki.
They work just as well for a quick lunch or a family dinner, and the parking lot is usually full within an hour of opening, so plan ahead.
Brother’s Roast Beef & Pizza
$ | (781) 686-1404 | WEBSITE
A sub shop is one of the most predictable places to find yourself in Somerville during lunchtime. Not in Brother’s Roast Beef & Pizza’s case. This is a straightforward operation in a wheelchair-accessible building with limited parking where you order your food at the counter and eat it in a clean, welcoming space. It’s objectively satisfying. Friendly staff offer service as you eat roast beef sandwiches and there’s a menu full of pizza options that you can enjoy.
Our only complaint is that quality can sometimes be inconsistent. (We’ve even heard reports of it varying with items like sliced roast beef or steak tips.) Avoid all that and come for the reliable choices when Brother’s is consistent and full of locals looking for quick meals, whatever those are.
Aegean Restaurant
$$ | (781) 790-0067 | WEBSITE
If a typical Greek-American diner served food that was more traditional Mediterranean than Americanized, it might look like this family-run spot in Somerville, which has built a loyal following for its homemade bread and authentic Armenian-Greek recipes. The more obvious reason for Aegean’s popularity, though, is the generous portions of comforting food at reasonable prices.
A meal starting with the creamy Aegean dips and tabbouleh, followed by the perfectly seasoned chicken kebab or roasted lamb with rice pilaf, and ending with the crisp baklava or surprising Armenian honey cake costs around $25, plus they offer warm pita and friendly service that makes you feel right at home. Everything is flavorful, the atmosphere is clean and comfortable, and you’ll likely have enough leftovers for lunch the next day. What’s not to like?
Krasi
$$$ | (617) 536-0230 | WEBSITE
Verdict: Krasi serves a memorable Bourdeto fish dish, but there’s no reason to endure the noisy indoor bustle when the patio offers such a beautiful alternative. We like the cozy corner booth by the window and the outdoor seating on perfect weather nights even better, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed.
Farm Grill and Rotisserie
$ | (617) 964-7766 | WEBSITE
At Farm Grill and Rotisserie in Somerville, you’ll find a straightforward counter-service setup that keeps things moving for the steady stream of customers lining up for their Mediterranean favorites. It’s an efficient system that works well for the lunch rush of office workers and locals craving something fresh.
There’s no denying these kebabs, especially the lamb kebabs cooked on the rotisserie, are incredibly tender and packed with flavor, but the generous portions mean you’ll likely have leftovers for later. We much prefer the meze selection, which showcases the clean, simple ingredients at their best. The calamari, octopus, and butter beans in tomato are all prepared with care, while the fennel salad with fresh orange provides a bright, refreshing contrast.
While some dishes might seem straightforward, we love the thoughtful touches like the creamy, rich hummus and the artichoke salad. The immaculate dining area feels welcoming and relaxed, plus they offer catering that arrives hot and well-presented for office events.
The Fat Greek
$ | (781) 777-2108 | WEBSITE
This Greek spot in east Arlington is built for the hungry, with a counter up front showcasing massive gyros layered with real meat cuts that spiral off the spit like savory ribbons, and falafel fries that look like golden nuggets. It’s also in its soft opening phase, which might explain the occasional online order hiccup as the friendly staff works hard to learn the ropes. Most portions run large for the price, but they also double as authentic comfort food and are fantastic to dig into.
My Other Kitchen
$ | (617) 932-1444 | WEBSITE
Verdict: The appeal of the meals here depends on the dish, and the Greek salad with chicken souvlaki is better than the burgers. The highlight is the straightforward comfort food, which tastes like a home-cooked meal made with care.
Eleni’s Restaurant
$$ | (339) 999-2898 | WEBSITE
Verdict: Eleni’s Restaurant offers an authentic Greek experience, though the upscale vibe feels more suburban than sophisticated. We prefer the stuffed eggplant over the grilled octopus.
Grape Leaf Mediterranean Grille
$ | (617) 527-5366 | WEBSITE
Trendy Greek spots and artisanal gyros are popping up all over Somerville this year, but Grape Leaf Mediterranean Grille is the one making foodies go ballistic. That’s because this charming takeout joint sits in Newton, where you can get outstanding flavors from the comfort of a relaxed atmosphere. Just like the best Mediterranean spots, Grape Leaf has a menu with the breadth and depth of your typical Greek feast.
You’ll see sections dedicated to Pork Souvlaki Gyro, Lamb Kebab Dinner, Lentil Soup, and desserts like Rice Pudding and Chocolate Chip Cookie. Most meals cost under $15 and are very good if not a little generous (prepare for your portions to be piled high with excellent tzatziki sauce or incredible deliciousness in every bite). Still, the Pork Souvlaki Gyro is Grape Leaf’s real draw. And you can skip right past the previous mix-up drama.
