Katy is just a short drive from Houston, a place where barbecue joints and Tex-Mex spots outnumber residents on any given day, and a favorite destination for food lovers and pitmasters alike. So it’s no surprise this suburb is a top culinary destination among Houstonians. That said, with so many options, it can be hard to know where to find the perfect frank—gas station counters and ballpark stands aside.
Pepitos | VIKING TASTY POWER | Foodtruck | Restaurant
$$ | (832) 423-1851 | WEBSITE
This Venezuelan spot may as well be called Follow The Smile given how many satisfied-looking adults and families leave its vibrant food truck setup with a pepito or two in hand. The USP of this little takeaway place is authentic Venezuelan pepitos. The soft meat and delicious cheese are layered with tasty sauces in front of you, to create a gloriously flavorful, fresh sandwich.
Varieties change depending on what’s available, but there’s always the traditional pepito coming out of the kitchen too, with plenty of truffle potato sides and sauce combos. The service is excellent for everything too.
Mochinut
$ | (832) 930-7802 | WEBSITE
Mochinut, a donut spot in Katy, a little further down from the usual chains, is somewhere you need to check out. The menu at this popular place changes depending on the daily flavors, but it’s bound to be pretty delightful. Churro mochi donuts, potato mozzarella corn dogs with hot Cheeto dust, and fresh mango bingsu in a metal bowl gives you a general gist. They also specialize in coffee and the changing selection is great.
Philly Flats
$ | (832) 437-1679 | WEBSITE
Philly Flats is a wonderful little gem where you’re just as likely to leave with a craving for more buffalo wings as you are a hefty, authentic Philly cheese steak. Just off the main Katy roads, this is a top place to fuel up for a game day or casual dinner. We particularly like the Philly combo with its generous portions if it’s on.
The wings can be a little pricey but if you’re into plump, crisp, and juicy flavors, then take a seat at one of the booths inside, get stuck into one of the freshly made dirty chips topped with bacon and cheese whiz, and get a nice side of that changing ‘flavor of the month’ on the side.
Taqueria El Toluca
$ | (832) 720-3660 | WEBSITE
A taste of Mexican authenticity in Katy, Taqueria El Toluca charms with the sizzle of fajitas on the grill, a menu offering tacos and burritos scrawled on the board like a friendly promise, and twinkling lights come evening. The restaurant is a clean and cozy space which suits bringing someone you want to, well, share a truly satisfying meal with. Sitting at the busy counter, which faces the bustling kitchen, breaks the tranquility a little.
Instead, head to the patio seating—the light will bounce off your glass of refreshing melon water and glistening tripe tacos, and make you feel like your most content self.
MONARCA BAR AND GRILL
$ | (978) 962-9203 | WEBSITE
Although they make a mean hot dog and the hamburgers with crunchy bacon and melted cheese are incredibly satisfying, the food at Monarca isn’t even the best thing about it. Before we even tried the fresh Cholado and the unique pineapple sauce that came drizzled on the side, we decided this was a restaurant we would come back to. Inside a vibrant space in Katy, Monarca is a fun, lively spot with an excellent soundtrack of Dominican classics playing.
Staff sing along to merengue beats, the cozy patio area floods the room with warm evening light, and authentic flavors are displayed throughout the menu like a culinary hall of fame.
Chung Chun
$ | (832) 930-7802 | WEBSITE
When you want to satisfy a sweet tooth craving in a space that feels more like a hangout than just a restaurant, there’s Chung Chun. The front of this modern dessert and savory snack spot in Katy is bright and photo-ready, with a vibrant green wall and glowing neon signs. The seating area feels cozy and inviting, perfect for lingering over treats with friends.
It’s as fun as gathering at a favorite local spot, but with better aesthetics, a lively atmosphere, and a Fresh Mango Bing Su that beats any basic ice cream sundae. The menu focuses on Korean-inspired treats and stays consistent, but you’ll find delights like the generous Mango Strawberry Sul Bing Su and the savory potato corndog with mozzarella cheese and hot dog.
Sul Bing Su
$ | (832) 930-7802 | WEBSITE
Katy isn’t a fine dining destination but it does have a growing roster of sweet, treat-happy spots—and Sul Bing Su is one of them. The shaved ice parlor, dessert cafe, and snack stop has an eclectic Korean-inspired menu and an exceedingly good-natured feel to it, from the eager staff, to the cute pastel decor inside, to treats like mochi donuts for dessert.
It bills itself as a place to pop in, whether for a solo bingsu at the counter or for a corn dog post-dinner, and it really does feel like that. You’ll find families with kids enjoying the spacious seating, while groups of friends settle into the cozy booths for things like fresh strawberry bing su and cheddar corn dogs.
PINCHO Burgers and Kebabs
$ | (346) 636-0600 | WEBSITE
While not quite a traditional Texas barbecue joint, there is a growing number of Katy restaurants that would fit right into Houston’s vibrant, fusion food scene. PINCHO Burgers and Kebabs is one of these and, in fact, offers a delicious blend of Latin, Mediterranean, and American cuisine. The casual, fast-service spot has a clean, welcoming atmosphere, and a quick lunch can easily turn into a satisfying dinner.
A seat at the counter combined with the attentive staff and something like the fried cheese with its halloumi-like texture will set the tone nicely. A well-cooked burger with that special spicy sauce and crunchy potato sticks, even better.
That’s My Dog
$ | (346) 387-6944 | WEBSITE
The best time to visit That’s My Dog is when the live music starts. The hot dog spot, sharing space with Aunt Bill’s Soul Food in Houston, doesn’t get as chaotic as the main dining areas and is the ideal place to unwind with family. But it’s not the only reason to come (especially since most of the time you’re not there just for the tunes). The hot dogs are excellent and creative, but not fussy.
It’s the kind of place that describes their Dirty Dog with chili, shredded cheese, and onions as “very ‘life-changing comfort in a bun'”. The warm atmosphere and warm hospitality invite lingering, especially if you get a seat where Rose makes you feel like family.
Caramba Street Food
$ | (832) 423-1851 | WEBSITE
There are plenty of street food spots in Katy, but Caramba Street Food is the standout. It sits on Mason Road, but inside the truck there’s a welcoming energy. Plates of grilled chicken street tacos and pepitos Caracas style, and generous cachapas topped with pure cheese are handed through the window. They disappear quickly, every last bit of flavor savored with patacones and fresh wraps.
Glasses of horchata are enjoyed as conversation and focus shifts to sweet arepas filled with warm, melty cheese. Caramba Street Food is all about fantastic Venezuelan and Texas-style dishes, quick lunches, and satisfying meals.
