The greatest thing since sliced bread? Sometimes it’s not bread at all. A frank in a bun, chili-smothered or Chicago-style—we could go on. There’s a dog for every craving, every cookout, and every condiment preference. A classic dog. A gourmet dog. A dog loaded to the brim. Here are the places to go when all you want is a hot dog.
Rios Barbacoa
$ | (210) 681-5773 | WEBSITE
Tender barbacoa, warm corn tortillas, that unique hot sauce. No, you haven’t stumbled into a Texas food dream, we’re just telling you what to expect from the seriously delicious and seriously authentic offerings at Rios Barbacoa. A San Antonio-style restaurant, this casual spot is all about barbacoa—slow-cooked meat that’s been a tradition in Texas for generations.
MaryMonee Chicago Style Food
For Chicago transplants or Windy City-obsessives, there’s only one place to get your hot dog fix, and that’s MaryMonee. It’s a Chicago-style takeaway spot in San Antonio that mixes authentic flavors with generous portions. There are plenty of classic combinations, like a gooey Italian beef dipped with cheese or a fully loaded Italian sausage, but it’s the phenomenal gravy on the Italian beef sandwich that has our hearts.
The owners are welcoming and kind, often going out of their way to ensure a good experience, even waiting for customers who arrive close to closing time. Everything is made fresh, and the large portions make it a great spot for families—kids even eat their entire meal. For those craving authentic Chicago-style cuisine, MaryMonee is well worth the drive.
Shake Shack Brackenridge
$ | (210) 469-3732 | WEBSITE
There is something heartwarmingly straightforward about the burgers from Shake Shack Brackenridge. The San Antonio staple—and Texas favorite—has been serving up delicious patties for years, and locals have relied on it for truffle-topped creations and Korean BBQ-inspired lunches ever since. Eye up the seasonal specials on the menu board and see what takes your fancy. The mushroom burger with portobello patty is a classic.
Tropic Express
$ | (210) 522-0608 | WEBSITE
If you’ve ever looked at a dessert menu and thought, ‘yeah, but it’d be better with some tropical flair’, then you’re really going to like Tropic Express. This good-times spot in San Antonio serves many-flavor and multi-texture treats in simple cups and cones. The classic CocoNada with vanilla ice cream remains the best, but the Cherry Raspa is a close second.
The Shack
$ | (210) 375-4097 | WEBSITE
The only thing that separates The Shack’s burgers from a really good hot dog are the buns, but we’re not mad about it. Fillings like the Shack Burger with cheese, ham, and avocado blend into the toasted bun with every bite. Although the San Antonio spot only has around 10 seats on the outdoor patio, the turnaround is fast and the Shackrizzo is so good that we’d happily eat one of these standing on the patio with our dog.
Wienerschnitzel
$ | (210) 375-4711 | WEBSITE
Wienerschnitzel in San Antonio is a nostalgic spot for many, offering classic chili dogs and friendly service. We recommend leaning into the slightly lighter chili cheese hotdogs and chili cheese fries at this clean, accessible location. And be warned, they tend to sell out before, or during, the afternoon school run.
Jocho’s Don Chente
$ | (210) 461-2955 | WEBSITE
Jocho’s Don Chente is 100% authentic Mexican and feels like a cross between a bustling street market and your abuela’s kitchen. They serve delicious, classic dishes—like perfectly grilled tacos and juicy hot dogs wrapped in soft buns. Book their catering, grab a drink, and watch the team set up quickly as mariachi music plays and you take your first savory, satisfying bite of a carne asada street taco.
El Jefe Hotdogs, burgers and more
$ | (210) 954-9382 | WEBSITE
There are a handful of options at El Jefe, and each one delivers a satisfying, juicy burger with a perfectly cooked patty and fresh toppings. There’s often a steady stream of customers at this San Antonio spot: someone ordering the classic cheeseburger, another going for the loaded hot dog. The signature burger is our top pick. It’s stacked with crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, melted cheddar, pickles, and their special sauce for good measure.
Mad Mack’s Burger
$ | (210) 922-1500 | WEBSITE
Once you eat from Mad Mack’s Burger, a family-run spot in San Antonio, you’ll realize that the chain-that-shall-not-be-named is not the best way to get your burger fix. We like the Hickory Burger—loaded with smoky flavor and perfectly cooked meat—and the Swiss & Mushroom Burger, a classic combination done right. After you finish, there’s the feeling that you and the menu have lots of unfinished business.
Chago’s
$ | (210) 309-9175 | WEBSITE
Every taco from Chago’s contains a mound of juicy, tender, slow-grilled meat between fresh tortillas imported from Mexico. The generously filled tacos from the perma-busy food truck stall are a napkin’s dream, but there’s balance to these creations. Our favourite extra fillings are in the Chango Tacos—the rich, melted cheese, grilled onions, and fresh cilantro cut through the savory meat perfectly.
Mini tacos 2 hermanos
$ | (210) 962-2919 | WEBSITE
Mini Tacos 2 Hermanos’s menu offers variety but its magnificent asada mini tacos always remain. The asada is tucked into warm corn tortillas for a flavor-packed meal, with charro beans and fresh salsa thrown in as well. There are occasionally other specialties at the food cart too: like a take on a Mexican burger, with patties juicy enough to make any burger joint blush, melty cheese, and a generous helping of avocado.
Wrigleyville Grill
$ | (210) 369-9833 | WEBSITE
You know those hometown hot dogs you crave? The ones that taste like a trip back to Chicago without leaving Texas? Those are the kind of hot dogs that Wrigleyville Grill, a hidden gem in San Antonio, serves every day. The Italian sausage combo (with its tangy peppers, sweet caramelized onion, and juicy sausage) is seriously good and the other dishes, be it the hot Italian beef sandwich or the veggie pizza, are the same. Our go-to is the Maxwell Street Polish if it’s on.
There’s also a nostalgic atmosphere with photos on the walls and a map for visitors to mark their hometowns.
Chagos
$ | (210) 255-1484 | WEBSITE
If you can embrace Chagos’s cozy, no-frills atmosphere, this is outstanding Mexican food. The quesabirria tacos arrive with golden, crispy tortillas holding rich, slow-cooked birria and come with a side of savory consommé for dipping. Other standout dishes include the tender flautas res and the vibrant green enchiladas. Just know that this San Antonio spot fills up quickly with regulars. But this is a meal we’d gladly wait at the counter for.
Mark’s Outing
$$ | (210) 299-8110 | WEBSITE
In the pantheon of great burgers, a classic cheeseburger stands high on the podium. And, if you’re after a handful, then pay Mark’s Outing a visit. The restaurant sits as a popular takeaway spot in San Antonio. The bun is fluffy and one of a kind, the beef patty cooked to perfection, and a side of amazing onion rings the perfect foil for this KO of a burger.
The Dogfather
$ | (210) 481-4272 | WEBSITE
The Dogfather’s hot dogs are like the unplanned but happy result of a hook-up between a Texas cookout and a gourmet deli. The creations—the Wake n Bake, the BBLT, the Frito Pie Dog—are San Antonio classics, which is very The Dogfather, and although eating one can get a little bit messy, they’re very tasty. Get them at their clean, friendly spot with great service and reasonable prices, where the 100% beef weiners and locally sourced ingredients make every bite worth it.
Frida Kalorie
$ | (210) 884-5051 | WEBSITE
This kiosk inside the mall serves authentic Mexican street food in the form of tacos filled with your choice of tender and flavorful meat, delicious sauces, and other tasty options. All the food is made fresh in front of you and each taco is also topped with the perfect amount of fresh ingredients. The tacos are our favourite, but the quesadillas and tortas are also excellent, so order with confidence.
Five Guys
$ | (210) 370-9620 | WEBSITE
Five Guys, a welcoming burger joint in San Antonio, uses fresh ingredients for one of our favourite orders—the Cajun fries, which have a generous coating of their signature seasoning. Heed the recommendation for extra napkins from the friendly staff who grill burgers, fry golden fries in peanut oil, and spoon toppings from the well-stocked condiment bar into generous portions.
Doolittle’s Mobile Kitchen & Catering
$ | (210) 284-5970 | WEBSITE
There must be science behind why hot dogs on a bun are often so satisfying. But it relies on them being as delicious and as flavourful as the menu from Doolittle’s Mobile Kitchen & Catering. This culinary gem specialises in juicy sausages with creative toppings, alongside smoky barbecue sauce and fresh cilantro. The Pineapple Express hot dog, with grilled pineapple and crispy onions—you name it, Doolittle’s will make it a harmonious blend of flavours.
Chef Brian and his friendly team create a vibrant atmosphere that makes every visit enjoyable, perfect for any event or party.
The Angry Elephant
$$ | (210) 545-3782 | WEBSITE
Hot dogs are perhaps our favourite subcategory of casual dining, and The Angry Elephant in San Antonio makes one of the best hot dog experiences in Texas. There are about three standout menu items, with highlights ranging from delicious nacho fries, perfectly crispy wings, to the Boomer Cheeseburger with its patriotic portion sizes. They’re served in a lively atmosphere and excellent value too, with most items priced around $12-$18.
The easy-going vibe, complete with dart boards and pool tables, makes it feel like you’ve left the city, especially during fight nights when the place gets packed with fans. Arriving early is wise to secure a table, but the friendly staff and solid whiskey selection make any wait worthwhile.
