Bozeman boasts authentic Italian spots that transport you straight to Tuscany. It also has those generic pasta chains you somehow end up settling for after a long day. Don’t do that. Go to a proper trattoria because, aside from being much tastier, they’re also where you’ll find handmade pasta and wood-fired pizzas worth savoring. Here are the best across the whole of Bozeman.
Blackbird
$$ | (406) 920-1751 | WEBSITE
Blackbird is a Bozeman mainstay and you can practically stroll there from anywhere on Main Street. This warm Italian restaurant is a special-occasion spot that’s as much about the atmosphere as it is about the food. That said, the pasta and pizza are consistently excellent, and there’s a solid selection of appetizers and desserts to enjoy as well. Bozeman locals have been dining here for years so it’s fair to say, families with kids are very welcome.
Pizza Campania
$ | (406) 404-1270 | WEBSITE
Pizza Campania is a charming Italian restaurant in the heart of Bozeman’s Cannery District. So whether you’ve been hiking in the Bridger Mountains, pretending you don’t need another energy bar, or just strolling through downtown, it’s an easy 10-minute walk from either. The wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza is particularly good here, but there are appetizers, desserts, and an impressive beer selection as well.
Red Tractor Pizza
$ | (406) 359-1999 | WEBSITE
You know those pizza nights you plan when you’re starving? Where you get all excited about making something epic from scratch? The ones where one friend is going to hand-stretch the dough and ferment it for 72 hours, and another is going to source heirloom tomatoes for the sauce, and then you all wake up the next day and just order Domino’s? Well, Red Tractor Pizza is basically all of those dream pizzas you want to make but never do, in a restaurant.
Fresco Café
$$ | (406) 586-6826 | WEBSITE
Whether you’ve been hiking in the Bridgers, exploring the Museum of the Rockies, or wandering around Main Street, Fresco Café is a good place for a memorable meal, if only because finding authentic Italian cuisine in Bozeman would usually require a plane ticket and/or a reservation months in advance. This charming spot got its start a few years back.
They’ve given it a little bit of TLC while retaining its cozy and romantic interior, and on a nice evening it’s got one of the best atmospheres in Montana with those roll-up doors letting in the mountain air. The food is fantastic enough, and there’s decent choice with those generous portions, so it’s a good place to head if you’re with someone who’s a bit picky about their pasta or wine.
Audrey’s Pizza Oven & FreeFall Brewery
$ | (406) 522-5456 | WEBSITE
After a long day exploring the Montana wilderness, Audrey’s Pizza Oven & FreeFall Brewery is the spot you want to come to as a reward. It specializes in thin-crust pizzas that will make you pledge eternal devotion to that crispy crust. Apart from pizzas, the wings and salads are also incredibly flavorful, and the fact that this place is constantly full of locals and visitors speaks volumes.
Olive Garden Italian Restaurant
$$ | (406) 522-9962 | WEBSITE
Olive Garden Italian Restaurant is a dependable place. Parts of it feel like it’s been designed by someone who really understands cozy comfort, and then other parts are full of warm lighting and families enjoying meals together. We prefer the second part, though we’re also thankful that the service is part of the other bit. This Italian-inspired restaurant makes superb dinners – shrimp scampi and angel hair pasta, grilled chicken entrees, breadsticks – alongside crisp salads.
Colombo’s Pizza & Pasta
$ | (406) 587-5544 | WEBSITE
A family dinner at Colombo’s Pizza & Pasta is a family dinner well spent. Unless you’re trying to get your kids to eat something green, they’re ignoring you completely, and you resort to bribing them with quarters for the arcade. In which case, our sympathies. At least nobody in the lower room will judge. This Bozeman spot is as nostalgic and no-fuss as they come. Pizza. Pasta. Chewy thin crust pies with that famous sauce. Gluten-free options.
And an excellent garlic bread that even holds up during the rush.
