Either way, you’re tired, your feet hurt, and crucially, you’re very hungry. SUSHIE! is something of an old-school hero to the hungry, it’s all about traditional sushi dining, and their red dragon roll is one of the best in Los Gatos.
The warm, homey feel from the lovely couple who’ve run it for years makes you forget the pricier side of things, especially when the fish tastes super fresh and delicious. Their bento dinner combos with the crispiest tempura hit the spot perfectly, even if some rolls were a bit tricky with chopsticks. The friendly staff and complimentary dishes just seal the deal, making it worth every cent.

Yes, this Japanese spot is located in—deep breath—Los Gatos, California. And yes, despite being a popular local haunt, it’s pretty great. It doesn’t quite have the serene ambiance of a high-end omakase counter, but that’s to be expected given its bustling neighborhood vibe. The food however, is still delicious. A Rainbow roll with vibrant layers of fresh fish and avocado, a Tiger dragon roll with eel and cucumber wrapped in rice and seaweed, and Kanpachi nigiri that melts on the tongue.
Generously portioned bento boxes and sashimi platters that are great to share. And that consistently fresh fish that we want to be our plus one to all future meals.

The mix of sterling and awkward dining room makes it a great place to come with a small group, or even on your own for a lunchtime date with a bowl of steaming hot curry.

A round of the uni pasta with egg roe won’t hurt either.

We’re pretty sure that if we went shopping with the chefs who run this place—otherwise known as the ‘crew’—we’d end up spending the entirety of our savings after being bombarded with so many recommendations and feelgood smiles. This place not only serves one of the best agadashi tofu in Los Gatos, it’s also just generally a lovely, cozy place to be. Expect delicious Japanese dishes, affordable generous portions, and plenty of friendly banter from the staff.

It’s as flavorful as it is generous, and there’s plenty more on the extensive Japanese menu, from deluxe okonomiyaki to beautifully presented rolls. If the mood strikes, take your feast to a nearby park, find a sunny bench, and dig right in.
