When a Japanese restaurant in Penticton starts generating buzz, you’re either already planning your visit or dismissing it as trendy hype. But whether you’re chasing the latest omakase or craving classic comfort, one thing’s certain: you need to know where to go. Here are the spots that truly deliver.
Isshin Sushi Bar & Asian Dining
$$ | (250) 770-1141 | WEBSITE
This bright sushi bar (filled with minimalist wooden tables and soft Japanese folk music) is like stepping into the sunlit dining room of some modern Tokyo home. Everything about the Penticton space seems designed to keep you relaxed and satisfied, which might explain why reservations are often full—no one rushes. Some of our favorite dishes here (like the veggie tempura, pork tonkatsu ramen, and complimentary green tea—yes, it’s that good) aren’t even sushi at all.
And enjoying takoyaki in a room that makes you feel like you’ve found a hidden gem is objectively delightful.
Katsu Heaven
$$ | (250) 490-0252 | WEBSITE
Katsu Heaven has been generating buzz since it landed on Main Street in Penticton. We credit it to this Japanese spot’s combination of being in a prime location and serving consistently delicious, high-quality food. It’s so talked about, in fact, that you’ll hear some claim the curry is too salty. That is an overstatement. The katsu options are consistently flavorful, and the service is always exceptional. The Curry Pork Loin Katsu on rice is what comfort food dreams are made of.
There’s a sizzling plate of garlic soy Korean chicken perfect for sharing, and excellent yakisoba too. Despite the quick preparation, you’ll always be seated in a spacious, clean interior, and have a relaxed meal with friendly staff who bring the check exactly when you’re ready to leave.
KOYA Penticton
$ | (778) 476-5101 | WEBSITE
Any Penticton restaurant associated with the words “Japanese,” “authentic,” and “gluten-free” is guaranteed to be reliable. This is the case with KOYA Penticton, a Japanese spot on Main Street. It’s designed to be a crowd-pleaser, buzzing with everyone from solo diners to families celebrating birthdays. It’s also clean and chic, decorated with minimalist wooden accents and soft lighting that creates a warm glow.
And while the menu isn’t going to blow your mind with creativity (it’s mainly ramen, sushi, and a handful of bowls) what’s on it is good. The karaage has a crispy gluten-free crust with homemade sesame dip, and the vegan shiitake tofu burrito will have you reaching for extra napkins like a kid with a melting ice cream cone.
GINZA SUSHI & POKE
$$ | (250) 493-0303 | WEBSITE
Try to get a table at Ginza Sushi & Poke on a Friday night. Did you hear that? That was OpenTable laughing at you. This is the best Japanese restaurant in Penticton, and the first place we try (and often fail) to book when someone from Vancouver tells us they’re visiting. The menu is full of hits, from the Brussels sprouts to the cowboy tuna roll—a spectacular creation with fresh, quality ingredients we want buried with us when we die.
Lee’s Overseas Restaurant
$ | (250) 492-7172 | WEBSITE
Lee’s Overseas Restaurant is a hole-in-the-wall with excellent ramen that’s been satisfying customers for over 15 years. That’s how long they’ve been serving their consistently delicious and fresh food, with friendly service that never wavers. The Tonkotsu Ramen usually sells out by early evening, and you’re left staring at the veggie chow mein and beef bulgogi on the menu. This might happen on many, many visits in a row.
But when you do finally get a bowl, your patient wait will be rewarded with pork that melts in your mouth and perfectly cooked vegetables that aren’t over-seasoned.
Edo Japan – Riverside Village – Grill and Sushi
$ | (250) 770-0062 | WEBSITE
Like many spots with buzz in their atmosphere, Edo Japan has had steady streams of customers and has been consistently busy since it arrived. But this Japanese-fusion grill from the team behind the popular Riverside Village location delivers—we’d happily circle the parking lot a few times to secure a spot for their satisfying dishes with Japanese and fusion flavors. Tasty noodle bowls are loaded with savory chicken and beef options.
And there are delightful sushi choices, like fresh rolls or vegetarian selections. Stop by after school with the kids to pick up some bubble tea and immediately win Parent Of The Day.
Japanese Kitchen Kura
$ | (778) 476-1138 | WEBSITE
When a restaurant is tucked away in a modest Penticton strip mall, and is run by a Japanese-trained chef who prioritizes freshness over flash, expectations are set for authenticity. Japanese Kitchen Kura delivers. This cozy Japanese spot has a welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. The friendly owners in simple aprons give warm recommendations about daily specials to regulars grabbing lunch and first-time visitors exploring the menu.
And when servers bring out steaming bowls of delicious ramen, perfectly balanced chawanmushi, fresh nigiri made to order, and maybe some complimentary green tea after your meal, you too will feel genuinely cared for.
Just Delicious Japanese Bistro
$$ | (250) 494-4692 | WEBSITE
Verdict: Unless your craving for exceptional sushi is a “happily wait an hour for a table” type of devotion, plan for a 5:30pm arrival to secure a spot before the dinner crowd descends.
