Your taste for California rolls has never been this refined. That familiar craving for takeout has been replaced, you actually booked a reservation, and you’ve swapped your usual spot for an adventure through San Gabriel’s authentic izakayas and omakase counters.
Hayatobi
$$ | (626) 703-4344 | WEBSITE
When your friends ask you to pick “a solid Japanese spot” for a casual night out and you get those happy cartoon sushi rolls dancing in your head, Hayatobi is the move. All of the dishes, from marinated raw octopus in fresh ginger and wasabi to perfectly cooked salmon collars, taste like if izakaya comfort food was actually elevated, and the restaurant is in San Gabriel, which means amazing value.
Eating at the sushi counter isn’t bad either – the vibe is welcoming but not chaotic, and there’s a chef who takes pride in the rice. If you’re about to introduce your crew to the place you will probably end up craving and you need the food to do most of the impressing, Hayatobi is a good choice.
Dancing Spoons
$ | (626) 537-1240 | WEBSITE
Whether or not your friends are into Thai food, they’re going to like Dancing Spoons – it’s kind of a staple around here, and it feels like a cozy restaurant in a well-decorated family kitchen. The menu has some tasty options, like shrimp and veggie tempura and pad kee mao. And if the only Thai thing your friend has ever tried is pad Thai, point them in the direction of the Spicy Basil Chicken or the crab Rangoon. The mango sticky rice is also an absolute must.
Ducks Restaurant
$ | (626) 287-8743 | WEBSITE
Some people go to a fancy Japanese restaurant with minimalist decor and a sushi bar. And some people skip that nonsense and just head to a cozy spot that has cute duck decorations all over the walls. Enter Ducks Restaurant, a slightly upscale mom-and-pop experience in a space that’s reminiscent of that kitschy tea house your aunt loves (then never stops talking about).
Do some crispy fried offerings, or grab some hearty sets (we love the Katsu Teishoku with that satisfying crunch and rich miso), and then you really can’t go wrong with any of the noodle dishes. If you want the duck theme to feel more immersive, get the Karaagedon.
Katsu Sando – San Gabriel
$ | (626) 545-2266 | WEBSITE
You’re looking for a spot that’s quick, has delicious food, and won’t break the bank. And you want something genuinely tasty, of course. Katsu Sando won’t make you compromise on any of those things.
The clean counter, bright lighting, and efficient soundtrack of sandwich wrapping make the space feel like a modern Japanese takeout haven, and the menu is excellent across the board, from the honey walnut shrimp sandwich with waffle fries to the chicken katsu sando with its highly recommended sauce to the true sleeper hit of this place: the generously filled and flavorful tuna onigiri.
Sushi Rolland | Japanese Restaurant
$ | (626) 632-7615 | WEBSITE
Sushi Rolland is a standout Japanese restaurant serving exceptional sushi and sashimi, and everything here is remarkably fresh: think dragon rolls with just the right amount of sauce, blossom rolls bursting with flavor, and combos featuring crispy tempura and tender sashimi. Sit in the vibrant Blossom Market Hall, order some rolls and combo meals (don’t miss the all-cooked box, or the perfectly balanced salad), and for the third time, assure your friend that you really do appreciate good plating.
No.1 Kazoku
$$ | (626) 573-4888 | WEBSITE
No.1 Kazoku is a great spot for a casual Japanese meal with friends, a date, or, yes, your family. Share excellent small plates like garlic edamame and mixed tempura veggies, and/or get some fresh sushi and sashimi. Your family will like the clean, well-maintained setting, and you will like the weekly specials like Norwegian trout and Suzuki. A lot.
Meat Togo
$$$ | (818) 722-3888 | WEBSITE
So you’re in San Gabriel, and your friends are skeptical about “all those generic strip mall spots with the same old menus.” Show them that this neighborhood isn’t just a sea of predictable options plus the scent of generic teriyaki drifting through the air.
Meat Togo is a very appealing spot in a compact but well-organized space that’s focused on quality rather than flashy decor, and the selection has everything from premium wagyu for Korean BBQ to unique cuts like beef tongue and everything you need for hot pot.
Wa Izakaya – SGV
$$ | (626) 427-1077 | WEBSITE
If you’re actually serious about Japanese food and want to impress your friends who think they’ve tried everything, Wa Izakaya – SGV is the cozy, authentic spot where you should absolutely bring them. It’s right in the heart of San Gabriel, so it’s a prime location for post-shopping chirashi bowls, fresh salads, and incredible housemade sushi.
An order of the Sunset roll is mandatory for the table, and get the miso black cod to give your friends the best meal of their lives (next to that time they went to Tokyo).
Yuki Sushi
$$ | (626) 607-2024 | WEBSITE
If your family is made up of sushi fanatics, you need to bring them to the best Japanese spot in the valley. Yuki Sushi is home to excellent nigiri, killer rolls (like the Yuki Special), great omakase, and a head chef so friendly your mom won’t even be able to think of a good joke about the window full of fresh fish in an otherwise charming situation: mood lighting.
Yama Seafood LA
$$ | (626) 250-6203 | WEBSITE
Yama Seafood LA doesn’t have a traditional front entrance, and you’ll need to find your way through the back to discover this hidden gem. But despite that quirk, Yama Seafood LA is the perfect local-friendly spot for excellent Japanese sushi in a charming marketplace kind of setting.
There are plenty of ready-made options like nigiri and chirashi bowls (our favorite choice here), you get to pick up sushi-grade fish fillets to take home (just in case that’s something you’ve always wanted to try), and the dedicated parking lot nearby is an excellent convenience before or after your visit.
