In Baltimore, where you can find hummus and falafel at nearly every corner market, what distinguishes the truly exceptional Mediterranean restaurants? The food is essential, of course—the freshness of ingredients, the mastery of technique. But if all you crave is a flawless gyro, we promise, there are countless recipes online. The city’s finest Mediterranean spots offer more than just great meals; they’re vibrant destinations where every bite tells a story.
Amman Halal Food
$ | (423) 712-2991 | WEBSITE
Amman Halal Food is a lunch line that never disappoints. This always-busy halal cart outside the Rubenstein child health building is essentially a friendly neighborhood spot, with regulars chatting with the owner and the quick service that keeps things moving in about five minutes. But this isn’t just hospital cafeteria food.
The signature dishes are all satisfying and flavorful, from the lamb over rice with its small salad and drink to the tasty falafel wrapped in soft pita with those flavorful sauces. Don’t leave without trying the owner’s extra tomatoes and sauces—he remembers your preferences without asking.
Cafe Fili
$ | (410) 244-1600 | WEBSITE
Cafe Fili is from the team behind some of Baltimore’s best Mediterranean spots, and it’s just as vibrant. But while those places might feel like cozy neighborhood joints, this Mount Vernon corner spot is more like a celebration in Beirut’s most stylish quarter. It’s bathed in warm, golden light, with a large mosaic-tiled counter, a wall of intricate brass lanterns, and lots of spacious wooden tables.
There are about a dozen Lebanese classics on the menu, including the fresh chopped salad, the perfectly seasoned gyro sandwich, the Mediterranean lamb salad, and a couple of dishes that are as colorful as the ambiance. Try the smoky roasted cauliflower, the lean and tender meats, or the well-priced, perfectly flaky baklava.
ZAATAR Mediterranean Cuisine
$$ | (443) 873-7463 | WEBSITE
ZAATAR Mediterranean Cuisine is a cozy Mediterranean spot tucked away in Baltimore. It’s dimly lit and comfortable, with a clean, quiet setting that gets livelier around dinner hours. Grab a friend, share some baba ghanoush, and dig into the signature beef shawarma served in huge portions with hot, juicy meat. You can also try the spicy hummus, as long as you’re prepared to pay over $20 for most entrees. (Mediterranean dining isn’t cheap these days.)
Pitamore restaurant and catering
$ | (202) 670-9695 | WEBSITE
Many of Baltimore’s best Mediterranean spots are either overly formal or overly casual. Refreshingly, Pitamore is neither. It’s more like a bustling neighborhood kitchen with warm lighting, simple wooden tables, and smooth-as-butter chicken schwarma. That schwarma comes with personal containers of garlic sauce, which would be excessive if it were served with a lesser pita. Elsewhere on the menu, we really like the fresh, vibrant salads that somehow taste a little like dessert.
Cazbar – Columbia
$$ | (410) 528-1222 | WEBSITE
Ordering a meal served by a robot doesn’t necessarily sound very authentic. But in the main dining room at Cazbar, the sleek, modern robot, gliding between tables with plates of Adana iskender and beef pastry, might be the beginning of a very authentic Turkish evening.
This Columbia restaurant has a lively atmosphere that’s perfect for groups, but it’s worth it to visit on a Friday night when you can sit at a table and watch a very experienced belly dancer perform while eating a large portion of kebabs and drinking sangria.
Marie Louise Bistro
$$ | (410) 385-9946 | WEBSITE
Marie Louise Bistro comes from the same team behind some of Baltimore’s most beloved Mediterranean spots, though it carves out its own distinct identity. Think of this place as a classic French bistro without the pretension. The dining room has warm lighting and exposed brick walls, and, ideally, it’s where you should begin every special evening in Mount Vernon.
If you want, you can start with the steak tartare (made elegant, of course), or you can build your own meal from their prix fixe menu that ranges from considerably simple to decadent as their surf and turf. The back seating on the second floor offers a serene escape, while the outdoor patio buzzes with live musicians on weekends. Regulars swear by the escargot and crab cake sandwich, but save room for the ricotta pistachio cake—it’s worth every calorie.
Service remains attentive even when the kitchen gets backed up, and at around $65 per person for three courses, it delivers solid value for the quality. This isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience that keeps Baltimore coming back.
The Black Olive
$$$ | (410) 276-7141 | WEBSITE
The Black Olive, a Mediterranean gem tucked into a converted townhouse in Fell’s Point, feels like a restaurant. Because, with its rustic wooden decor and cozy ambiance, that’s exactly what it is. The place has that warm, welcoming vibe perfect for larger gatherings, with private rooms available for those special occasions. The menu showcases standout dishes like lamb meatballs, sardine in grape leaf, and expertly prepared Arctic char and Rockfish.
The mood is rustic-elegant, and the extensive wine list features exceptional pairings recommended by knowledgeable staff who make you feel right at home.
Jasa Kabob
$ | (410) 327-7152 | WEBSITE
Jasa Kabob is short for “Just Always Satisfying Appetites,” although most people refer to this place as “that Pakistani spot with the incredible chickpeas.” It’s been around since 2020, back when Mediterranean food started to get serious in Baltimore, and there weren’t yet so many places serving complex, smoky flavors on every corner. It’s still a fun place to grab a generous portion of delicious curry or tikka masala.
Ridiculously small dining area aside, this place doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s just a tiny, casual room with simple tables, fast takeout service, and a hint of aromatic spices. Place an order ahead, and try the aalu gobhi platter if you’re vegetarian.
Jordanian Halal Food Truck
$ | (443) 432-9232 | WEBSITE
These days, there’s an abundance of food trucks in Baltimore. It seems like every other spot serves trendy fusion or overpriced bowls. Most of these trucks are kind of rushed, but Jordanian Halal Food Truck feels like a friend’s kitchen where you can stand about and sample authentic Middle Eastern flavors. This place easily has the most impressive chicken over rice in the city, with perfectly seasoned meat piled high on generous portions in the small, welcoming space.
Stop by for a casual meal, and try the mixed chicken and lamb with rice served with spicy sauce.
Karella’s Cafe
$ | (443) 708-8383 | WEBSITE
This small Greek taverna is family-run in East Baltimore’s Greektown, and the food lives up to the authentic atmosphere. But we also come here to live out some very specific culinary fantasies. Karella’s is in a cozy, updated space with an open kitchen, and the best place to enjoy your grilled octopus is at a table where you can watch the chefs work.
Outfitted with Greek television channels and clean interiors, it feels like a local’s home, if your host happened to moonlight as a master of Mediterranean flavors. For a little more action, grab a seat near the kitchen—and don’t miss the spicy feta dip, cheeseballs, or well-cooked lamb chops.
Yomna’s Halal Cart
$ | (443) 824-2134 | WEBSITE
The day you crave fussy, sit-down dining is a sad one for fans of bold, handheld feasts. But there’s still some serious flavor craft involved at Yomna’s Halal Cart, which holds its ground in Baltimore’s street food scene. Their focus just stays on generous, satisfying plates. The meals—all around $10—are built over rice or wrapped in pita, and we’d recommend trying one of each style. Start with the Chicken over Rice, a combination of perfectly seasoned grilled chicken and aromatic rice.
It comes with that tangy, creamy sauce, and it tastes like the hearty, savory essence of a home-cooked meal (in the best way). There are still some delicious options here, and even if you’ve just stopped by for a quick lunch, order the falafel over rice with dill sauce, and the highly recommended lamb gyros.
HipHop Fish and Chicken Shawarma & Pizza n’Kebab
$ | (443) 438-5095 | WEBSITE
HipHop Fish and Chicken Shawarma & Pizza n’Kebab is located at 535 Dundalk Avenue, and it isn’t especially hard to spot, because there’s usually a steady stream of people heading into the bustling storefront. Once you step inside, you’ll find yourself in a warm, welcoming space that feels like a classic neighborhood spot. There’s no formal menu board, so to get your meal, you chat with the friendly staff and tell them what you’re craving.
After they’re done assembling your order with fresh ingredients, they’ll surprise you with an incredibly tender and flavorful chicken shawarma. The booths along the wall are the most comfortable seats, but if you grab a spot at the counter, you can watch the quick, efficient service in action.
Costiera
$$ | (443) 438-4363 | WEBSITE
Sometimes, you look at the menu at Costiera and think, “No way they can pull this off.” Ingredients they’ve been known to use include pumpkin, swordfish, and octopus. And you know what? That pumpkin works really nicely with pasta and creamy sauces. The restaurant is located in a bright and airy space in Baltimore, with beautifully decorated interiors and unique flatware that adds a fun visual touch to the table.
The service is friendly and attentive, making guests feel right at home, so this definitely isn’t a rushed dining experience, but if you want to eat something entirely memorable, grab a seat in the welcoming atmosphere.
Cosima
$$$ | (443) 708-7352 | WEBSITE
If you’ve ever looked out at a river and realized you can see the water shimmering right through the old mill windows, you can thank this Jones Falls spot: It’s been at the forefront of the historic-charm dining movement since opening in Mill No. 1. But while Cosima now offers the lovely ambiance to other places via its own atmosphere, it’s so beautifully lit inside this water-side, decor-filled restaurant that you’ll barely be able to make out the time of day, let alone what’s on the menu.
That hardly matters though: the house dishes are superb, perfectly balanced, and reasonably priced during dinner. The seasonal options are great too—we’d recommend starting with anything pasta-based. Sit on the outdoor patio with friends, or at the bar if you’re solo, and order a cocktail when you need a drink.
Ammoora
$$$ | (410) 872-6600 | WEBSITE
If you absolutely must dine at a place where the servers are wearing crisp white shirts, make it Ammoora. Open for several years now, this Baltimore Mediterranean restaurant has a luxurious look, complete with ornate decor, Middle Eastern art, and soft lighting. The atmosphere is as incredible as ever, and the menu selection is always impressive, with lots of well-prepared dishes showcasing culinary artistry.
Sit at a cozy table in the beautifully decorated dining room, or take a seat at the bar and watch as a bartender makes you a flawless cocktail with the focus of a master craftsman.
The Kabul Fresh Grill
$ | (667) 212-3303 | WEBSITE
After a recent update to Baltimore’s Mediterranean dining scene, The Kabul Fresh Grill made the list, and it’s worth checking out. They didn’t really put much thought into the name of that kids’ chicken tender, but don’t let that dissuade you from ordering here. At The Kabul Fresh Grill, you feel like you’re eating inside of a straightforward, affordable take-out spot that knows its kebabs.
On the menu near the top, there’s the chicken tikka kebab, and in the main offerings you’ll find the Afghan burger, chicken over rice, and those praised chicken kebabs. Come by for a meal when you need something generous and flavorful, and be careful with the service. The Kabul Fresh Grill makes the juiciest, most tender kebabs we’ve had, served with a side of potential delays.
KM Island Cuisine Restaurant
$ | (443) 478-8817 | WEBSITE
If you manage to try every dish on the menu at this cozy Caribbean gem in Baltimore, well done. It’s packed with authentic Jamaican flavors that span generations, from the well-seasoned Curry Chicken to the popular Jerk Chicken Patty. But if you simply order the first thing that catches your eye, we applaud that choice too. Richly spiced, deeply satisfying, and made with care, the food here adds up to more than just a meal, and a visit to KM Island Cuisine always feels like a treat.
Grab a fresh Ginger Pineapple drink, chat with the friendly owner, and stop by during the workweek for a welcoming atmosphere and generous portions.
Hibiscus Restaurant
$ | (443) 478-8817 | WEBSITE
Tucked away on Baltimore’s culinary scene, Hibiscus Restaurant feels like the cozy, vibrant kitchen of a Caribbean home. The $18 jerk salmon here comes with rice and peas and steam cabbage—a standout dish that uses ingredients like Scotch bonnet peppers, allspice, and thyme. You’ll receive a complimentary taste of their homemade pineapple ginger drink with your meal, but if you want something more substantial, try the $16 curry goat or the jerk pork.
It’s not a very large place (consider calling ahead), but they make great use of the space with comfortable booths, warm lighting, and good music playing, and there is, fittingly, a charming waterfall display adding to the relaxed atmosphere.
