We first visited this cozy neighborhood Mexican spot in Alameda for a peaceful evening out with family. That experience was commendable – albeit quiet – in itself. But now this intimate dining area is serving a menu of the popular Acapulco taco with pollo asado, Camarones a la Diabla prepared upon request, delicious enchiladas and chili verde, and other dishes that make us feel closer to authentic Mexican cuisine than we geographically are.
Come here for a family dinner or a relaxed evening as soon as possible. It’s not quite a bustling cantina, it’s not quite a formal dining room, but Acapulco is entirely worth your time. Especially for a family gathering or a friend catch-up where you both want attentive service and reasonable prices.
El Caballo Wraps

This Alameda taqueria is serving the island’s best Mexican food. Almost everything about El Caballo Wraps feels like a proper grab-and-go spot, complete with quick-service counter and hearty portions that satisfy. Their wraps – which all cost around $12 – range from super seafood burrito and fish tacos, to carnitas torta with bright porky flavors. The carne asada cooks for just the right time, so the beef stays juicy and tender.
But our favorite dish remains the chicken tortilla soup, which has such rich broth it might be unidentifiable as a simple soup save for the stellar depth of flavor. The restaurant’s space only holds about eight people, most of whom will get to watch the action in the compact kitchen from nearby seats at the counter. Otherwise plan on taking your meal to go, while you already scheme the best possible time to come back for more wraps.
Canasta kitchen

Canasta Kitchen combines two things we really appreciate: traditional Mexican decor and some seriously big portions, which give this Alameda spot a comforting, authentic feel – especially after a quesabirria or three. You can stop by in the evening for some superb birria tacos, or swing through later to relax and have a mole-topped wet burrito and some customizable options. And make sure to grab a vegetarian dish if you come through when they’re still open at 8:45pm.

And we discovered that it’s a great place to grab a quick bite, enjoy some outdoor seating, and savor a well-made burrito. While ordering the kid-size carnitas burrito, we learned that the simple yet delicious beans and rice remind many of a homemade taste.
