11 Best Mexican Restaurants in Hartford, CT [2026 Updated]

Here it is: our list of the best Mexican restaurants in Hartford for 2025. And you want to know something? We’re surprised. Surprised that the most authentic al pastor came from a food truck turned brick-and-mortar, and that we found ourselves returning to the same family-run spot in Frog Hollow three times in one week. There’s a story in every tortilla, but we’ll save the full analysis for later. For now, just start eating.

El Sarape

$ | (860) 547-1884 | WEBSITE

El Sarape

El Sarape feels a bit like a festive cantina from a previous era, and is quite possibly the only authentic Mexican spot in Hartford to have such a consistently lively vibe. The food is excellent across the board, and will be enjoyed by everyone from a street taco enthusiast to a pozole lover to the person who wants to enjoy a nice plate of enchiladas.

Despite the vibrant atmosphere and the fact that they serve Mexican candy that belongs at a traditional celebration, El Sarape is somehow neither overwhelming nor kitschy. Mostly, it’s just delicious.

Monte Alban Restaurant

Monte Alban Restaurant

If you’re willing to spend $50 per person on fancy Mexican fusion with all the bells and whistles, Hartford has plenty of upscale spots ready for your next special occasion. For the rest of us, there’s Monte Alban Restaurant, where a generous plate of enchiladas with rice and beans starts at $14. You’re likely going to want to add on guacamole or try the mole once you get going, but overall this is the absolute best combination of authentic flavor and value we’ve yet to find in Hartford.

The cozy dining room with its warm lighting and simple decor is still the heart of the experience, but the take-out option (which many regulars swear by) feels just as reliable – and definitely like one of the best casual Mexican spots in the city.

Tacos los mexicanos food truck

Tacos los mexicanos food truck

Tacos los Mexicanos is the food truck we’ll be at the second we want authentic Mexican flavors – it has an incredible picnic table situation. But we’ll also be eating here regularly in any weather, in order to convince ourselves, for at least a meal, that we’ve found something special. This is the best Mexican spot in Hartford, and they serve the kind of food that you do not expect to find at a food truck.

A big part of that has to do with their birria tacos, which are made fresh and have more flavor than we understood birria could have.

Alebrijes Mexican Fusion

$ | (860) 748-4403 | WEBSITE

Alebrijes Mexican Fusion

Alebrijes has taken Mexican fusion to a new level: with phenomenal, authentic food bursting with flavor, ridiculously good aguas frescas, and a vibrant space on Maple Ave filled with hand-painted artwork bursting with color and whimsy. Get the $18 Memelas with pork pastor, which involves a variety of fresh toppings and some excellent red and green salsa, order some salsa Verde or a great agua fresca, and have a really fun evening in a restaurant that’s actually doing something that feels unique.

Viva Mexico Taqueria

$$ | (860) 216-3144 | WEBSITE

Viva Mexico Taqueria

From the outside, Viva Mexico Taqueria doesn’t really give you a reason to look up from your phone. Look in the window too, and all you’ll see is a Park Road spot that looks mostly like every other taqueria in Hartford – maybe even more unassuming. Which makes the experience even better when your food starts arriving: at lunch, mind-blowing tacos, and at dinner, stuff like perfectly seasoned pork and some of the better beans and rice you’ll remember eating.

Nothing here is overly complicated, but even the simplest food is impressive. This is our sleeper pick of 2025.

Agave Grill

$$ | (860) 882-1557 | WEBSITE

Agave Grill

Agave Grill isn’t just a great Mexican restaurant. It’s a great restaurant period. You could come here with a person who thinks Mexican food begins and ends with Taco Bell, and they’d still have a great time. The menu has everything from golden beef empanadas and chicken chimichangas to fish tacos and veggie burritos – and, whatever you order, you can be confident that it’ll be about ten times better than the Mexican options you find at most other places.

The space itself has a casual, pub-like feel with fun music and a welcoming atmosphere, and it’s perfectly located near the XL Center for before or after an event.

Orale Guey Mexican Kitchen

$ | (860) 216-8222 | WEBSITE

Orale Guey Mexican Kitchen

Even though we do enjoy occasionally pretending we’re having dinner in a bustling Mexico City mercado, we’re not otherwise much for authenticity hype. Our high praise for Orale Guey Mexican Kitchen has little to do with its hidden location in La plaza del Mercado. They are very different from the typical Hartford Mexican spot, even though much of the vibrant energy feels transported straight from a family-run taqueria and rebuilt inside this cozy, unassuming space.

Orale Guey is a restaurant we love for the trademark fresh flavors and consistently spectacular tacos. But much like our favorite neighborhood joints, we prefer to do Orale Guey casual, meaning a quick meal at one of the simple wooden tables early in the evening, as opposed to only treating it like a destination for their famous tripe soup. The occasion is Thursday. Celebrate it.

El Nopal Mexican Restaurant

$ | (860) 231-0054 | WEBSITE

El Nopal Mexican Restaurant

El Nopal sounds like it could be a typical fast-casual Mexican spot, but it’s actually a charming family-owned restaurant in Hartford. This place has some crowd-pleasing favorites, like a generous platter of nachos that look like what might happen if a rainbow got in the snack game, but dishes like the birria tacos and tres leches cake were what really made us fall in love with the food here. We recommend coming with friends so you can share everything.

This is the best Mexican restaurant in the city.

Coyote Flaco

$$ | (860) 953-1299 | WEBSITE

Coyote Flaco

Coyote Flaco makes the best Mexican food in Hartford. You can try to argue with us on this, or you can just head to this restaurant and taste it for yourself. They also do the best skirt steak chimichurri we’ve ever had, and a few other incredible dishes you should try on return visits. This is a quintessential great Mexican restaurant – welcoming, casual, friendly, and somewhere you wish you could come back to weekly.

Burrito Loko

$ | (860) 470-6887 | WEBSITE

Burrito Loko

Speaking of grabbing a quick bite, good luck finding a seat at Burrito Loko anytime during the lunch rush. And you know what? That’s OK. Even though it’s tucked inside the Parkville Market, Burrito Loko is one of those experiences you can only have in Hartford.

It’s a vibrant stall with a fun atmosphere that feels like a lively street food scene, and during peak hours it will be full of people filling themselves with food they probably shouldn’t be eating in such generous portions, or maybe they should. Get the shrimp tacos as a starter, birria tacos as a main, and scoop up the nachos with extra toppings. Told you.

Fogata Mexican Restaurant

$ | (959) 888-3152 | WEBSITE

Fogata Mexican Restaurant

Meet the new Fogata, same as the old Fogata. Sort of. This authentic Mexican spot in Hartford opened its doors a while back, and for those who remember what real Mexican dining used to be like, Fogata will feel very familiar. It is also exactly what you’d expect from a family-run restaurant that cares about tradition – a full fledged neighborhood gem. Maybe that’s why we’ve enjoyed our meals here so much.

Fogata is a warm, welcoming interpretation of what dinner was like for families gathering around good food, minus the fuss. It’s affordable, but it’s also a lot of flavor. And it’s far less complicated than trying to cook all those dishes yourself, or finding parking somewhere trendier.
