Katy’s Mexican dining scene is so vibrant that it spills beyond its city limits, drawing food lovers from across Greater Houston. In this fast-growing Texas suburb—where taquerias and family-owned cocinas anchor bustling shopping centers—the authentic flavors run deep. Here are the 12 standout spots where every bite tells a story.
Ñecas Mason
$ | (281) 693-2299 | WEBSITE
Ñecas Mason is a hidden local gem with all the Mexican restaurant standards—excellent fajitas poblanas featuring tender steak, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and tomatoes topped with cheese, green enchiladas praised for their authentic flavor, Chile relleno, tortilla soup—but the real reason to come here is for the warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Their chicken breast special arrives sizzling hot with rice and beans: a satisfying complement to the respectful, friendly staff who keep drinks, chips, and salsa refilled. The tortilla soup has a comforting texture, with a rich broth and a delicate, authentic flavor. Ñecas Mason does have seating inside, so if you’re lucky enough to snag a table, you can get right down to the business of enjoying a great dining experience.
Fajita Pete’s – Firethorne
$ | (281) 396-4441 | WEBSITE
Tucked away in a suburban strip, Fajita Pete’s – Firethorne is a straightforward, family-friendly spot that specializes in Tex-Mex fajitas, a sizzling dish of grilled meat and peppers that’s a staple of the region. Place your order and build your own meal by choosing protein options (chicken, beef, shrimp) with classic sides, with or without extras—or simply go with one of the house favorites. We love the chicken fajitas with refried beans, salsa, and guacamole.
The handmade tortillas are wonderfully fresh, and just warm enough to wrap everything up perfectly.
Castillo’s Mexican Restaurant
$ | (832) 892-0411 | WEBSITE
Of the many Tex-Mex spots in Katy, Castillo’s Mexican Restaurant is one of our favorite places to get excellent food at tables that are clean and kid-friendly. The authentic menu includes generous portions like chilaquiles and fajita plates for around $15, and you should go for one that comes with fresh homemade tortillas, because both the flour tortillas and the dishes are top notch.
If it’s a full meal, put together a feast with things like nachos with cheese and ground beef, all served with quick, friendly service from staff who care about the experience with personal touches like handshakes.
Tacos El Grande (Food Truck)
$ | (346) 213-3875 | WEBSITE
There are a lot of Mexican food trucks in Katy. Tacos El Grande is parked right next to one of the most popular—the often-busy park where kids play—and it’s just as good. There are only a couple of picnic tables nearby, but all of Tacos El Grande’s menu items are easily available to-go. Get the Birria street tacos, a tortilla and meat dish packed with flavorful, tasty juice. You can add michelada mix, but there’s enough going on without it.
To satisfy your simpler cravings, they also have deliciously made-to-order tortas in varieties like beef and chicken.
Ambriza
$$ | (832) 979-2388 | WEBSITE
Ambriza is a Mexican spot in Katy with warm, cozy vibes and very good tacos. There’s a steady stream of happy customers, but tacos—like a crackling fire or a perfectly ripe avocado—are best enjoyed fresh at the table. You don’t need all the extras that come with the crispy pork belly tacos, but get them anyway. The combination of crunchy pork and the flavors of the green salsa and complimentary elote make these tacos extremely delicious.
If you’re with a group, get an order of churros: they come with cinnamon sugar and a rich chocolate dipping sauce.
Las Tarascas #2
$ | (281) 579-9994 | WEBSITE
At Las Tarascas #2, you might get barbacoa tacos that taste like a Sunday at your abuela’s house—and that’s only part of the reason why we think it’s one of Katy’s best Mexican spots. Though the dining room is simple and functional, there’s no skimping on flavor or heart. The flautas and tamales are perfectly executed, there’s a good salsa selection, and the pace of the meal is quick, especially compared to other options in this price range, which can sometimes feel like a wait for average food.
Order at the counter in advance, or grab some marinated beef fajitas to go.
Adrian’s Mexican Street Food
$ | (281) 391-0605 | WEBSITE
Adrian’s is another Mexican spot that we love, especially for groups. With a few extra friends, you can feast on their best item: Quesibirria Tacos. The Houston favorite consists of tender birria meat, melted cheese, and crispy tortillas, all dipped into a rich consommé that has the same comforting effect on your soul as a warm hug. We like the Taco Lunch Special the most, which comes with chips and salsa instead of the typical rice and beans.
From 11am-2pm, they also offer a special lunch menu with combinations like tacos, chips, and a small margarita for $8.99.
Basa’s Mexican grill
$ | (346) 631-8801 | WEBSITE
When you pull up to Basa’s Mexican Grill, head straight to the drive-through and order the tripas tacos: crispy, flavorful fillings wrapped in perfect tortillas that will make your taste buds sing. If you have a little more appetite, get the enchiladas or a plate of fajitas. There’s plenty of seating inside this beautifully decorated restaurant, but the convenient parking makes it easy to take your meal home and enjoy it there.
Taqueria EL PILLO
$ | (346) 257-7323 | WEBSITE
Taqueria EL PILLO is a Mexican spot in Katy that’s in a more accessible, less congested area than many of the others on this list. There’s a spacious outdoor seating area that can accommodate a big family gathering, a few long picnic tables that can seat a group of eight, and a handful of smaller tables. Head here for the Birria combo and the tasty tacos, which come with a straightforward yet satisfying array of fresh cilantro, diced onions, and a few other things.
Taqueria EL PILLO also offers pleasant service.
Tacon Madre
$ | (713) 471-2233 | WEBSITE
This is one of the best Mexican options in the area, with highly seasoned chicken and fajitas that are full of flavor. For less than $12, you can get the chicken tacos, which come with spicy sauces and fresh toppings. Or, get the fabulous fajita platter. The sauces are spicy and delicious, just the way customers like it.
Tacon Madre’s brightly lit, tile-floored space almost looks like a fast casual restaurant, so you’re definitely coming here to eat tacos, not go out to dinner, but the service is excellent—so it’s also a good option for last minute, walk-in groups.
Ruchi’s Mexican Grill & Seafood
$ | (713) 999-3240 | WEBSITE
The walls of this Mexican restaurant are painted with vibrant new colors that make the whole space feel fresh and inviting. We understand the impulse to make the atmosphere as appealing as the food here. The menu even offers a helpful guide to the popular parillada azteca, perfect for sharing. An order of the fajita, chicken, and shrimp botana looks just like the restaurant’s signature spread (without the fuss), but don’t stop at the botana.
The mango-based margaritas, skinny margaritas, and other drinks are all great. This is a good choice for Mexican when you don’t want to deal with a crowded scene, or if you have family.
Los Altos De Jalisco
$ | (281) 693-3917 | WEBSITE
It’s always lively at this Mexican spot, which specializes in Jalisco-style barbacoa. If you want to know the story behind their handmade tortillas, just chat with the friendly staff in the dining room. A dish based on tender, slow-cooked meat could be the conversation starter you need if you’re here with family or friends. If you’re in the more established, margarita-sharing phase of the evening, you won’t have to choose between corn or flour tortillas, and can just get one of each.
Don’t skip the freshly made salsa and guacamole, and get an order of the pastor burrito.
