There was once a time when Los Gatos’ Mexican food scene meant just a few reliable taquerias. And that makes sense given the town’s history. But today, authentic flavors from Oaxaca to Jalisco have found homes here. The next time you’re craving handmade tortillas with smoky carne asada or mole that tells a story, use this guide.
La Esquina
$ | (408) 884-8599 | WEBSITE
Unlike other Mexican spots that are full of sombreros or are doing their best touristy cantina impression, La Esquina’s simple wooden tables and warm lighting make it feel more like a dining room you’d find in a small Mexican village. And it’s a great setting, whether you’re looking for a casual weeknight dinner or need a cozy spot to host a small gathering.
The menu is a mix of classics, like carne asada street tacos and rich chicken mole, and less common options like fantastic al pastor tacos and carefully prepared fish tacos. Just know that you want to visit when you’re ready for authentic flavors, try to request the secret habanero salsa—La Esquina is one of the few Los Gatos spots with a truly genuine experience.
Tacos El Porkys
$ | (408) 854-0258 | WEBSITE
Despite what all the carne asada and pollo tacos floating around Los Gatos might suggest, in Mexico, it’s common to find pork in this classic cuisine. And one of the best places in town that has Mexican food in all its piggy glory is this casual food truck spot. The juicy carne asada burrito has perfectly seasoned edges, and the fresh salsas and pollo gordita balance out its richness.
Don’t neglect Tacos El Porkys’ other options—their generous portions and homemade flavors should also make it to your table.
Hercules Draft House & Cantina
$$ | (408) 402-3131 | WEBSITE
Hercules Draft House & Cantina is a fun casual spot in Los Gatos with tasty fish tacos, flavorful fajitas, and appetizers like homemade chips with spicy habanero salsa. Everything can be enjoyed on the pleasant patio or inside (well, maybe not the margaritas on the patio if it’s chilly) with options like seared salmon, oysters, and some delicious smoked salsa that has just the right amount of kick.
The vibrant space is always welcoming, the staff is really friendly, and it’s a great option for a generous dinner and Taco Tuesdays in the neighborhood.
Zona Rosa
$$ | (408) 884-8268 | WEBSITE
Zona Rosa is a Los Gatos mainstay that’s been serving up fantastic Mexican fare for years. For all of the taco lovers, their sizable scallop and bass tacos are excellent. And when it comes to proteins, they have all sorts of flavorful options: chicken, shrimp, and salmon. But their hearty tortilla soup is a must-order. On one visit, a regular who was ordering a bowl said that it’s the key to keeping her family happy. What lucky folks.
Doña María
$ | (408) 356-5677 | WEBSITE
Head to Doña María to enjoy their outdoor seating area. It’s set up with comfortable tables and a relaxed vibe that makes you feel like you’ve found a little escape, and for a moment on a pleasant evening, you might forget you’re just off the main street. Then a car will pass by and you’ll remember where you are, but it’s pleasant all the same.
Andale Mexican Kitchen and Bar Patio
$$ | (408) 395-8997 | WEBSITE
Considering Andale is in a part of Los Gatos full of upscale sit-down spots, this casual patio restaurant is a solid option if you’re looking for authentic Mexican without committing to a formal dinner. They have a variety of dishes including the popular chile relleno and newer quesabirria with tender shredded beef and crispy tortillas, plus burritos and tacos like the Carnitas Taco and Chipotle Burrito.
If you want to get some starters involved, their $7 chips are fresh and pair well with drinks like the Bloody Mary, though they’re on the small side compared to free chips elsewhere. The atmosphere combines cute indoor seating with two clean, inviting outdoor areas perfect for dates or groups, and the friendly service team’s extra effort helps balance out when some dishes taste mild or lack flavor. Overall, it’s a safe choice with a broad menu, good service, and a pleasant patio setting.
Nina’s Taqueria
$ | (408) 402-5076 | WEBSITE
Nina’s Taqueria is a Los Gatos mainstay that’s always bustling with regulars. And after scanning the crowded counter and tables, it’s clear what draws most folks in: the Supreme Bowl. It’s a generous portion, with tender steak and birria resting on a base of refried beans and fresh corn cut off the cob. We also appreciate their house-style chips for a little crunch between bites.
Nina’s also makes online ordering simple, so if you’re craving takeout and want to pair your meal with their spicy salsa, they can make that happen.
Two Pesos Taqueria
$ | (408) 866-4354 | WEBSITE
If you want to find authentic Mexican flavors in Los Gatos—the kind that makes you forget you’re not south of the border—the answer is Two Pesos Taqueria. Aside from being a family-friendly spot that mixes quick lunches with relaxed weekend breakfasts, it’s also a great place for classic burritos and creative vegetarian options. Get the generously sized carnitas burrito and homemade chips if you’re feeling traditional.
But if the bright, welcoming atmosphere has you craving something lighter, the fish burrito is fantastic. Somewhere between those categories is the life-changing chicken torta, with perfectly seasoned meat on fresh bread. And if you come during lunch hours, you can enjoy one of their massive burritos for around $13, which feels like a steal for the quality and portion.
Andalé Mexican Kitchen To Go Location
$ | (408) 395-4244 | WEBSITE
In the Bay Area Mexican food scene, a plate of Carne Asada Nachos is arguably as iconic as a Mission burrito—this Los Gatos spot is one of our favorite places to get one. It’s a no-fuss pile of tender grilled steak, melted cheese, fresh pico de gallo, and creamy guacamole, all layered on crisp tortilla chips. We’re also fans of their quesabirria with flavorful shredded beef, nicely crisped tortillas, and oozy cheese.
Andalé is mainly a take-out spot with a constant flow of neighborhood regulars and families picking up their orders. But for immediate nacho consumption, we like eating our food in their cozy backyard dining area with comfortable seating for all group sizes.
