Morgan Hill is a hidden gem of Mexican culinary excellence. And it should be–the flavors of Mexico are woven into its very fabric. We celebrate having authentic taquerias and family-run cocinas that know exactly what they’re doing. From sizzling al pastor to slow-braised carnitas, these are the essential spots that call Morgan Hill home.
La Hacienda Restaurant
$$ | (408) 778-7002 | WEBSITE
We’ve all settled for mediocre Mexican food in a pinch, but La Hacienda offers a cut above. This family-friendly spot serves up fresh, customizable dishes at prices that won’t break the bank. Enchiladas and chimichangas hover around $14-16, and the signature margarita packs a punch without being watered down. There’s also a charming mini-golf course that adds a fun touch, plus ample parking and a clean environment that makes dining here a breeze.
La Hacienda is a dinner destination worth going out of your way for—grab some tortilla chips and salsa to start, then dig into the asada chimichanga or enchiladas de camarón with a strong margarita in hand. Or don’t. The welcoming atmosphere and attentive service make it a regular choice for many.
Jalisciense Restaurant
$ | (408) 779-4439 | WEBSITE
With authentic flavors and perfectly seasoned carnitas, but none of the pretentiousness, Morgan Hill’s Jalisciense ranks extremely high on the affordable-Mexican-o-meter. This hidden-gem storefront run by a family team is famous for its $12 lunch special with two carnitas tacos and a chile verde burrito, which is admittedly more of a hearty snack than a full meal.
Regulars fill up on double or triple orders of it, but our preferred move is the budget-friendly combo platter, which starts at $18 and features three chef’s choice items with beans and rice.
Tacos Ameca #3
$ | (669) 888-3808 | WEBSITE
Head to Tacos Ameca #3 in Morgan Hill any day of the week and you’ll spot a steady stream of families, hungry office workers, and regulars who know the drill waiting for their orders at this neighborhood favorite. It’s a bustling, no-frills spot tucked away in a strip mall that’s become a local staple, serving up authentic Mexican fare built around freshly pressed tortillas made daily and filled with expertly seasoned meats (the Al Pastor is legendary here).
Grab a taco plate for around $15, loaded with generous portions of meat, beans, rice, and those outstanding homemade salsas, so you can savor the full experience of their menu.
Mariscos La Costa
$ | (408) 779-9511 | WEBSITE
Mariscos La Costa is a classic Morgan Hill Mexican spot with a simple sign marking its location in a local shopping center. Apart from the breezy patio offering relief on hot days, the interior is straightforward with basic tables and a casual counter setup. The food, however, happens to be fantastic and very affordable.
Street tacos and burritos are all under $12, and there’s a generous wet burrito option if you’re extra hungry for $16 that comes loaded with juicy meat, fresh lettuce, cheese, and perfectly cooked tortillas.
La Soledad Restaurante
$ | (408) 612-4470 | WEBSITE
Morgan Hill’s Mexican food scene was once a bit sparse, then La Soledad Restaurante arrived. The lively, music-filled space and $14 shrimp tacos feel authentic in all the right ways, and the portions are generous for the price. Expect big, delicious birria tacos with soup on the side and free refills of Aqua de piña with your meal. If you’re not in the mood for tacos, you can also enjoy vegetarian options like cheese enchiladas or potato flautas without your experience feeling limited.
Use it for a family dinner or casual weekend outing that doesn’t involve hunting for parking.
Taco Bell
$ | (408) 779-2500 | WEBSITE
If you’re tired of hearing about how great authentic Mexican spots are, sorry, we have nothing in common. This fast-food chain has cracked the affordable taco code and remains a weeknight staple whenever a craving hits us on a random Tuesday. Our Taco Bell love stems from the fact that it’s hard to find consistent, fresh ingredients at these prices anywhere, and also their vibrant atmosphere being so darn inviting.
You’re looking at a satisfying taco or quesadilla experience for around $3-5, and there’s probably a location within a 10-minute drive of your house.
Street Tacos El Sombrero100x
$ | (209) 408-6575 | WEBSITE
If authentic Mexican street food had a gold standard, Street Tacos El Sombrero100x would be it. Parked as a favorite taco truck in the area, this spot is especially known for their tasty pastor burrito and super burritos. The menu offers a variety of options from carne asada to pollo, all of which are delicious, and the orange sauce is a must-try! Everything here is a bit more flavorful than your average taco stand, the meats are a notch above what you’d find elsewhere, but still very affordable.
The big appeal spans generous portions and excellent preparation, but the best values are the burritos, like the pastor burrito for around $9.
Morgan Grill
$ | (408) 612-4345 | WEBSITE
For years, Morgan Grill has been one of Morgan Hill’s best value-for-money Mexican restaurants. Then it got even better. The owner’s commitment to authentic, fresh ingredients shines through in every generous portion. If you’re a fan of classic quesabirria, Morgan Grill’s version is the local benchmark. The $18 plate comes with tender birria, melted cheese, fresh tortillas, and a side of whatever the friendly owner recommends that day (extra-spicy salsa verde, during our visit).
There’s also fresh chips and other traditional dishes, too, if you want to explore the menu.
China Palace Restaurant
$$ | (408) 779-0618 | WEBSITE
This beloved Chinese institution in Gilroy and Morgan Hill has a lot of intriguing things on its menu, like its signature hot and sour soup and Mongolian beef (which we strongly recommend). Luckily, almost everything is $15 or less, or you can grab a family dinner for four that includes mu shu chicken, curry options, and generous portions for $75.
Most people are enjoying the spacious private areas for special occasions, but you can also stick around to enjoy China Palace’s warm and welcoming atmosphere with its recently remodeled full bar.
Burritos Tacos y Mas
$ | (669) 258-5064 | WEBSITE
You’ll notice the sign at Burritos Tacos y Mas promising ‘Big portions, fresh ingredients, free chips and salsa,’ so don’t bring your friend who just orders a side of guacamole. Both breakfast and lunch options are well-priced at this bustling Morgan Hill spot—among the former is a very satisfying breakfast burrito with eggs, potatoes, and chorizo for $12.
The lunch menu offers more variety for sampling, including flavorful quesabirria, some excellent fish tacos, and a chilaquiles platter with tangy salsa verde. It’s a popular space, so get there early to avoid the lunch rush.
Tortilla House
$ | (408) 779-0500 | WEBSITE
Tortilla House is—here it comes—pretty straightforward along the main drag. But once you step into the clean, modern space, you will be rewarded with delicious, fresh, and affordable Mexican fare. For $12.50, you can get a chorizo burrito with extra chorizo and cheese, and not just during peak hours like other similar spots around town. The service is quick and the staff is friendly, making it easy to chat over the ambient sounds. Cash and card accepted.
Sinaloa Café
$$ | (408) 779-9740 | WEBSITE
Sinaloa Café is one of the more popular spots for Mexican food in Morgan Hill, but tucked away in its bustling dining room is a casual, family-friendly vibe serving generous portions and authentic flavors. The menu at this inviting restaurant is varied and features familiar favorites you’ve likely tried elsewhere, but our go-to is always the mole enchiladas: so darn delicious, cheesy and saucy, plus a side of rice and beans for around $18.
The drinks menu offers unique options like the Call Me a Taxi and watermelon margaritas, and the service is generally great, with one server recently recognized for her outstanding performance during a large party. Parking is plentiful, and it’s a great choice for a satisfying meal out, with many customers eager to return.
Las Isabelas
$ | (408) 612-4994 | WEBSITE
We love this Morgan Hill taqueria for its generous portions of home-style Mexican food, and kitchen that does standout carne asada and al pastor tacos. But on the menu is a less-heralded but equally great feature: super burritos packed with flavor at affordable prices. The counter offers made-to-order lengua tacos for just $3, but if you want something heartier, we also like the super burritos, all prepared fresh and served with complimentary chips and salsa.
The small indoor seating area is simple and family-friendly, with attentive service that makes you feel welcomed without any rush. While the ambiance could use some improvement and parking is limited, the focus here remains on delivering authentic, satisfying meals that keep us coming back.
Jesús Mexican Restaurant
$ | (408) 778-9446 | WEBSITE
This family-friendly spot in Morgan Hill couldn’t be less similar to the upscale Mexican restaurants that have popped up in nearby cities, which feel more like trendy lounges that serve tacos. In fact, Jesús Mexican Restaurant is a throwback in the opposite direction, a low-key local staple where you’ll find families with young children enjoying $12 chili rellenos before heading home.
The food here is similar to home-style Mexican cuisine, except with more standout dishes we like better, such as the $18 chicken mole plate with generous servings of exceptional beans and rice.
