Let’s be honest: those trendy taco spots with two-hour waits and communal tables where you’re elbow-to-elbow with strangers? That’s fine now, but picture yourself at 75, craving authentic carnitas. Suddenly, accessibility matters as much as flavor. So here are the Mexican restaurants in Santa Barbara that’ll still welcome you—and your future self—with open arms and margaritas that taste like celebration, not compromise.
Taqueria Mena
$ | (530) 721-6758 | WEBSITE
Taqueria Mena is a small taco truck that serves up some seriously delicious Mexican grub. This place is the kind of spot you’d take your grandad if he wanted a proper treat without any fuss. He’d lean back, squint at the menu board, and rub his hands together when those fresh tacos arrived. Why? Because everything here tastes homemade and satisfying. The fish tacos are fantastic, the beef tacos hit the spot, and that Quesabirria is worth every penny of its reasonable price.
Even the vegetarian options like the mushroom tacos don’t disappoint. With quick service even during the lunch rush and that convenient location, Taqueria Mena is exactly where you should go when you want to treat yourself to authentic Mexican food that leaves you eager to come back for more.
Little Heart Cafecito
$ | (805) 679-5649 | WEBSITE
Your grandad has been telling you that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ since you referred to your own stomach as ‘tum-tum’ whilst pointing at your knee. Take him to Little Heart Cafecito. This proper Santa Barbara coffee shop has been serving up some of the best breakfast burritos in California since it opened, and has enough charm to rival any morning spot. Be warned though, it’s not too busy so it can get a little cozy.
La Cantina Bar & Restaurant
$ | (805) 869-2831 | WEBSITE
Few Mexican spots in Santa Barbara ‘get it’ as much as La Cantina does. This welcoming bar and restaurant is almost impossible to dislike, even by someone who dislikes everything. The patio and indoor dining area are buzzy but inviting, like a backyard party that serves you civiche. At night it becomes a bit more margarita-fueled and lively, which will probably make for an evening of gathering with friends and queso dip stains.
La Cantina isn’t the perfect restaurant, because there’s no such thing, but it is perfect for your pets, and lots of other situations.
Los Altos Restaurant
$ | (805) 845-8898 | WEBSITE
In Santa Barbara terms, Los Altos Restaurant is definitely one we’d classify as a gem, and that’s one of the reasons we think it’s an excellent choice to go to with your family. That and its insanely authentic Mexican food. This chill spot matches tradition and generosity in everything it does.
A lot of the food reads hearty and straightforward, but when you eat and look at the breakfast burrito with its perfect balance of guacamole, cheese, bacon, egg, and potato, it tastes anything but ordinary. The room is very relaxed neighborhood joint: open salsa bar, friendly chatter. But you won’t find any pretentiousness here.
La Super-Rica Taqueria
$ | (805) 963-4940 | WEBSITE
Santa Barbara prices can be pretty steep for everyone, not least a demographic of students and budget-conscious locals. That’s why finding a cash-only spot with great prices is a savvy move. Even when you’re with your family. La Super-Rica Taqueria is one of our favourites in Santa Barbara. The Mexican food at this legendary taqueria is delicious and moreish – not least their standout Taco de rajas – and the fact you’ll be paying cash means it’s tacos all round.
Cesar’s Place
$ | (805) 884-0964 | WEBSITE
Ah, classic, classic Mexican. Literally, classic. They’ve spent years serving up a steady supply of authentic flavors and satisfying dishes that keep you coming back. Finally treat yourself to a visit to Cesar’s Place. This seriously traditional Mexican restaurant in Santa Barbara has plenty of favorites, from the must-try Mojarra to the highly recommended Aguachiles and green chicken enchiladas, as well as breakfast options like the delicious Chili Verde.
Inside you’ll find typical Mexican decor and comfortable seating, but there’s also that familiar neighborhood vibe throughout if that suits your mood on any given day.
Del Pueblo Cafe
$ | (805) 692-8800 | WEBSITE
Nothing excites your grandparents more than a reference they know. Like when you talk about that old diner they used to visit, or the neighborhood spot they’ve heard about for years. That’s what’s so great about Del Pueblo Cafe: it’s become that kind of place. But even if your grandparents don’t know it, they’ll like it. This restaurant has been refreshed under new ownership: it’s got a gourmet twist, and also some reasonable prices.
That said, sitting in the relaxed atmosphere, eating exceptional chicken enchiladas or chile rellenos with that verde sauce, and feeling like you’ve found something special (in a welcoming family way, not a pretentious one) is a pretty irresistible combination.
Carlitos Café y Cantina
$$ | (805) 962-7117 | WEBSITE
Your friends love telling you stories – mostly of their best meals in Santa Barbara – and there’s nowhere better in town for storytelling, or fajitas, than Carlitos Café y Cantina. This 45-year-old Mexican restaurant feels more like it should be in a cozy courtyard than State Street. The outdoor seating area features a gentle fountain, flickering candles, and acoustic Spanish guitar music, whilst pretty much every available surface is covered in warmth.
All of which makes it perfect for sharing a combo plate whilst conspiring about your next weekend visit.
El Pastorcito Food Truck
$ | (805) 570-7014 | WEBSITE
If your idea of authentic Mexican food involves white tablecloths, sombreros on the wall, or mariachi bands, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by El Pastorcito. This food truck has been serving Santa Barbara for years, and honestly, apart from the addition of heaters for chilly evenings, this place hasn’t changed one bit.
It’s parked conveniently outside Tri County, so as soon as you get past the idea that you’re just grabbing a quick bite, you can start the task of choosing between their simple but delicious tacos and burritos. The food can be a little hit and miss depending on your sauce selection, and if you’re offended by simple preparations, crispy tripe textures, or staff that describe every salsa option as if it’s a family secret, then this might not be the place for you.
There’s only one way to experience it—grab a taco for around $4 or a burrito for about $9, so only go when you’re ready for some seriously flavorful street food.
Corazón Comedor
$$ | (805) 679-5397 | WEBSITE
Mexican food lovers crave authenticity. They savor mole in Oaxaca. They sip mezcal in Guadalajara. They don’t nibble nachos, scroll through delivery apps, and half-heartedly munch tacos while watching Netflix on the sofa. Corazón Comedor is a very straightforward restaurant in Santa Barbara. For a start it’s got corazón in its name, and secondly you only come here to eat one thing. That one thing is mole. Mole, mole, and more mole. Enchiladas with excellent mole sauce.
Chilaquiles with flavorful mole. All the bloody mole.
El Sitio Restaurant – Salinas
$ | (805) 963-0171 | WEBSITE
Some people think Mexican food is just about heavy plates and cheese-covered everything, which probably means they’d look at a vegetarian option like it just farted in a sombrero. If you’re a bit like that, then we suspect El Sitio will change your mind quite nicely. This is the spot that first perfected the casual Mexican meal in Santa Barbara, which roughly translates to: let’s eat all the good stuff. It’s a legendary and excellent place.
The kind where picking up a street taco with your hands can (and should) naturally lead to grabbing a fresh salsa from the bar. Empty stomachs and time for the patio are recommended.
Taquería Rincón Alteño
$ | (805) 962-9798 | WEBSITE
Taquería Rincón Alteño is a bustling Mexican spot in Santa Barbara with generous portions and authentic flavors aplenty, and if you’ve ever seen a hungry local stumble upon a taco truck by mistake, then you’ve got a pretty clear idea of how visitors react to their al pastor burrito.
In the summer you can sit outside in their small patio area with a cold horchata or a spicy margarita, and in the winter you can get cosy inside the clean, bright dining room with a plate of crunchy tacos and a side of that fresh green salsa.
El Rincon Bohemio
$ | (805) 967-4464 | WEBSITE
Whether it’s a casual weeknight dinner, or a weekend lunch, or you just want to give your friends an excuse to dig into some authentic Mexican comfort food, El Rincon Bohemio in Santa Barbara is a great choice. There are generous traditional dishes like menudo, huevos rancheros, and carnitas. There are tile tables that are both charming and practical. And there are extremely hot plates that keep everything warm and delicious.
