Like knowing where to find a reliable gas station or a decent cup of coffee, you should always have a mental map of Bakersfield’s essential eateries. That’s why we compiled this list. Well, that and to justify eating out eleven times in one week—a task that proved more challenging than expected in a city with so many mediocre options. But after the culinary slog, we’re ready to share our definitive favorites.
The Hideout
$ | (661) 368-2668 | WEBSITE
This Bakersfield hideaway does more than offer a vibrant atmosphere with great Spanish music, though that’s what most people are here for. The Hideout also features a taco truck on Tuesdays and Fridays that we can’t get enough of. The tacos have your typical cilantro, onion, and lime. But also a smoky chipotle salsa and fresh radish that tastes more like a zesty pico de gallo (yes, please).
It’s a little lively, but still pretty peaceful (just like us), and is one of the few spots in town where you can escape both the weekday grind and weekend crowds.
Tahoe Joe’s
$$ | (661) 664-7750 | WEBSITE
Bakersfield has its share of steakhouse chains, but Tahoe Joe’s is the one that feels like a hearty mountain lodge feast. Don’t expect any of those fussy “deconstructed” plates or molecular gastronomy at this reliable spot. No, you come here for a twin fillet steak cooked just right, with all the classic sides. The signature chicken pot pie soup, the ribs that fall off the bone, and the chicken with whiskey and peppercorn, if you’re feeling adventurous.
And if you really want to make a memorable meal even better, get an appetizer of Railroad camp shrimp and the spinach dip that’s as generous as the portions. What? We’re here for a satisfying experience, not a delicate one.
LUNA Cafe & Bistro
$$ | (661) 827-7895 | WEBSITE
LUNA’s ceviche is basically the little black dress of appetizers. It’s what you want to pull out on a night when you need something simple that has range. More chili-forward and umami-rich than the typical version, with just the right balance of acidity and heat. It works for a dinner date, a birthday celebration, or just a cozy evening out. And while we prefer the carnitas enchiladas with that praised green sauce, the Pollo Luna dish with asparagus is a solid alternative you can lean on.
Ruben’s Mexican Restaurant
$ | (661) 589-3676 | WEBSITE
Despite having only a few key dishes, the Chilli Colorado from Ruben’s Mexican Restaurant is one we wake up craving in the middle of the night. While this Bakersfield spot is best known for its affordable fajitas, the Chilli Colorado got a whole lot better with their signature preparation.
Head to this local favorite for a lively dinner, and enjoy your tender beef in rich red chili sauce, served hot with beans and rice, alongside their excellent salsa with refried bean dip, cheese, and jalapeno juice.
Guisados Jalisco
$ | (661) 836-5011 | WEBSITE
This Bakersfield-based Mexican spot has been on the must-try list for a while, and if you were wondering if it lives up to the praise, the answer is yes. The casual, clean spot, with simple tables, comfortable seating, and an organized counter does indeed make great food, and it’s as fresh as it is flavorful—just crispy chilaquiles with excellent salsa, tender carne asada with shrimp, and homemade tortillas for around $12. No offense, but other places can take a seat.
On The Vine
$$ | (661) 695-8545 | WEBSITE
On The Vine in Bakersfield is one of those places that knows what it does well and sticks to it. The wine selection is all excellent, but none are better than the knowledgeable staff’s recommendations—they guide you through pairings with your own food, creating a perfect match. It’s the kind of spot where the welcoming atmosphere wraps around you like a cozy blanket, allowing for both lively conversation with friends and quiet personal time.
The wine bar is especially popular with locals looking for a flexible way to enjoy a casual date night while catching the game on the TVs in the bar area.
Wine Me Up
$$ | (661) 588-8556 | WEBSITE
All of the small plates at Wine Me Up could be Bakersfield’s best wine bar bites, with perfectly creamy garlic bre on crusty bread that holds your fingerprints. But the cheese board at this cozy spot is so good we’d fake a throbbing headache just to get out of work early and enjoy it as soon as they open at 5pm. It’s served with a variety of artisanal cheeses, fresh fruits, and toasted nuts.
If you’re feeling fancy, pair it with their sweet wine selection—a true oenophile might need more than the little kick in the bubbly options.
Fire Wings – Bakersfield
$ | (661) 829-6648 | WEBSITE
Fire Wings’ teriyaki wings are the most addictive snack in Bakersfield. They’re crispy, saucy chicken pieces glazed with that sweet-savory sauce that sticks to your fingers in the best way. It’s the flavor we want to be eating when we’re watching the game on their big screens, or sinking the eight ball on their pool table. Pair them with the garlicky, golden fries.
Indian village vegetarian kitchen
$ | (661) 501-1520 | WEBSITE
While many Indian spots focus on meat-heavy menus, Indian Village Vegetarian Kitchen in Bakersfield takes a purely plant-based approach. Tuck into this cozy establishment where diners gather at simple tables, eagerly awaiting their homemade-style dishes. Those dishes include Palak Paneer, Dal Makhani, and Gobi Manchurian, all praised for their exceptional taste and perfect blend of spices, including the ginger in the dal tadka.
They’re flavorful, not watered down, and just as satisfying as the freshly made mango lassi that’ll give you that ‘ghar ke khaana’ vibe (totally authentic and worth it).
Golden Corral Buffet & Grill
$ | (661) 834-7224 | WEBSITE
The steak at this Bakersfield buffet takes a moment to win you over. That first sight of the carving station, endless salad bar, and dessert spread just don’t seem to match the price tag, much like you and your monthly budget. But if you give it a chance, much like your now favorite indulgence, your evening will be infinitely fuller. It’s the same helpful staff, clean environment, and wide variety that make this buffet our family dinner go-to.
Plus, Golden Corral serves until closing with plenty of hot food and parking, and you never know when you’ll need to pull a reliable feast out of your back pocket.
Horse in the Alley
$$$ | (661) 843-7982 | WEBSITE
You gave up chain steakhouses ages ago (except for the occasional business dinner), so you haven’t had a proper filet in a while. Enter Horse in the Alley—a restaurant so elegant that it hides in a historic alley entrance requiring reservations to keep things intimate. The filet with peppercorn whiskey sauce comes with the essentials: perfectly cooked beef, that rich sauce, and sides that let the meat shine.
And unlike that corporate steak you’ve been settling for, this juicy cut is made of actual quality beef. It’s a dish that’s looking to win you over with its relaxed pace and exceptional quality, not to overwhelm you with fussy presentation. Pair it with the Malva dessert and a superb cocktail while you enjoy the elegant atmosphere and attentive service.
