In Bel Air, debating the best crab cakes or most authentic Italian fare can spark friendly rivalries among neighbors. Ask about top dining spots, and you’ll hear a dozen different recommendations. But which casual joints truly deliver? And which upscale venues justify the splurge? We’ve done the tasting. Here are Bel Air’s finest restaurants, from cozy weeknight dinners to celebratory occasions.
Route 24 Ale House
$$ | (443) 922-7981 | WEBSITE
Route 24 Ale House sits in a nondescript strip mall along the busy highway that you might easily overlook while driving through Bel Air. We’d suggest you make a point to stop here because it’s become one of our go-to spots for casual pub fare and drinks.
For very reasonable prices (a satisfying meal with a beer will likely come in around $25 per person), the food is consistently enjoyable, whether you’re digging into their standout crab cake egg rolls or working through a plate of the classic, though slightly under-seasoned, beef tacos. Plus, the staff is genuinely friendly and attentive, and the TVs are always tuned to the big game, creating a lively, welcoming buzz.
Independent Brewing Company
$$ | (410) 937-0108 | WEBSITE
Independent Brewing Company in Bel Air is an ideal brewery for just about any occasion in between “I finished my errands” and “let’s celebrate something.” But to be fair, coming here “because cold beer is great” works, too. It’s always relatively easy to grab a seat here, and the beer selection is excellent. As a bonus, the atmosphere is consistently welcoming—so the brewery takes particular care in making guests feel like part of the local community.
If a high ABV hazy is your thing, it’s an option you’ll be happy with here. But Independent Brewing Company also succeeds if you go for one of the 15-plus rotating flavors. The beer shines with few extra touches, like the crisp finish on a classic lager, or the smooth, hoppy notes in their popular hazy IPA.
Conrad’s Crabs and Seafood Market- Bel Air, MD
$$ | (443) 981-3477 | WEBSITE
We can’t remember the last bland, overpriced crab dip we ordered elsewhere. Not because we don’t try other spots, but because they’re almost all underwhelming. Enter Conrad’s Crabs and Seafood Market, a friendly grab-and-go seafood market and restaurant in Bel Air that works wonders with jumbo steamed crabs. They also sell creamy crab quesadillas, plump steamed shrimp, and shrimp tacos that rival the seafood at Maryland’s fanciest crab houses—but costs a fraction of the price.
And if the display case looks picked-over at any given moment, just wait a few minutes for someone to bring out a fresh batch from the kitchen.
Arby’s
$ | (443) 372-5074 | WEBSITE
Arby’s is another reliable fast-food joint in a town where those are not too hard to come by, but this is one you should be prioritizing. Whatever you need to do to get here during the lunch rush, be prepared to do it. If it takes leaving work fifteen minutes early, convincing your coworker to cover your last meeting, and sprinting from the parking lot to beat the line, so be it.
The $7.00 lunch special includes hearty options like the double roast beef classic meal or the double roast beef with cheese, making it a steal. But just wait till you try the Horsey Sauce—there are few moments more satisfying than dipping crispy curly fries into that tangy, creamy condiment as if it were liquid gold.
And don’t skip the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich that arrives fresh and hot with melted cheese and a generous amount of ham on top, all served up by attentive staff like George who keep things moving quickly even when the place feels a bit understaffed.
CAVA
$ | (667) 469-0193 | WEBSITE
We’ve grabbed lunch at CAVA inside at a booth for a quick family meal, ordered takeout for a $12 weekday dinner, and stopped by during the busy lunch rush to get served by the manager who patiently explained the menu. We can confirm—this is the best Mediterranean spot in Bel Air. If you’re new here, you might not know that the food is consistently fresh and flavorful, with everything made to order. If you’re only going to try this Bel Air location just once, take the time to dine in.
You’ll get excellent bowls and pitas, ranging from spicy lamb meatballs to roasted vegetables. For any family outing that would call for spending around fifty dollars on quality meals, you will want to do it here.
Lee’s Asian Bistro
$ | (410) 273-1378 | WEBSITE
Lee’s Asian Bistro offers generous portions and quick delivery, with a variety of popular dishes like beef with peppers and onion, curry chicken, and vegetarian egg rolls. This is a clean, updated location where the service is great and the food quality is commendable, earning it a solid 4-star rating. The owner has an excellent, friendly demeanor that sets a positive tone, while the attentive staff ensures a seamless dining experience.
With fresh ingredients and a tasty menu that caters to all palates, many customers plan to order again, describing it as a special place with wonderful food. A typical meal here runs about $15-25 per person, served in a bright, modern space with comfortable seating that makes it perfect for a reliable, satisfying meal.
Richard’s Fish & Crabs
$$ | (410) 734-6161 | WEBSITE
This is a come-and-get-it seafood joint where everyone is united—Harford County regulars, families celebrating birthdays, and visitors who thought Bel Air was just a neighborhood in Baltimore. And despite the fact that the casual dining room feels like the setting of a local fishing tournament after-party, this generous menu delivers the same kind of seafood satisfaction you would expect from a place that’s been a county favorite for years.
Parking is plentiful, and while the steamed crabs are popular and in demand (they often sell out by evening), waiting for that order is worth it. They’ll customize the seasoning on your crabs based on how spicy you like it, throw in an extra crab cake here and there, and want to know everyone’s favorite dish, whether that’s the meaty pan-fried scallops or shrimp salad piled high on an iced dock sandwich.
The Mint Room
$$ | (443) 567-5953 | WEBSITE
Despite the serious Indian cuisine at The Mint Room, the ambiance is laid back. Light pours in the windows and staff chit-chat amongst themselves. It’s a great atmosphere for catching up with friends, date night, or even experiencing your first Indian buffet. While each of the generous portions—like flavorful palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, and vegetable samosas—has us smiling in front of comfortable surroundings, their piping hot service steals the show.
It’s quick, attentive, and more refreshing than a cool mint drink.
sweetFrog Premium Frozen Yogurt
$ | (443) 567-5826 | WEBSITE
This frozen yogurt spot in Bel Air is as Bel Air as it gets—clean and modern, but still kind of fun. Most importantly, the yogurt is top notch and there’s a range of flavors and toppings you don’t often find around town. The bright dining room with cheerful decor is good for friends sharing sundaes and laughs, or the occasional family that wants an upgrade from the usual ice cream run.
We like grabbing a seat at the counter for the self-serve experience that has a steady flow, highlighted by perfectly creamy soft-serve. Like choosing your first smartphone case or your first playlist, deciding exactly how to build your sweetFrog creation can be a little overwhelming at first, but it’s also half the fun.
India Garden
$ | (443) 456-3282 | WEBSITE
India Garden is a reliable spot in Bel Air that feels like a cozy neighborhood kitchen. There are simple tables, warm lighting, and the pleasant aroma of spices that makes you feel right at home. And it’s very easy to have a satisfying meal here. You’ll find generous portions of delicious food, including lamb korma with huge pieces of lamb and seafood madras that’s described as awesome, clean, and wholesome. Anything that comes with their garlic naan is also going to be fantastic.
Kim Wah Restaurant
$ | (410) 838-9636 | WEBSITE
Kim Wah Restaurant is our favorite spot for big-night-out Chinese food. From pork fried rice loaded with generous portions of tender pork to perfectly crispy orange chicken, the dishes here are so great on their own that we almost forget about the many other delicious things under their roof (looking at you, steamed dumplings, Singapore noodle, and Kung Pao). If you prefer your Chinese food in takeout form, they also serve tasty egg rolls and wonton soup.
Zen 16 Sushi Cafe
$ | (410) 836-5999 | WEBSITE
Planning a sushi dinner for a casual get-together can be tricky if you’re not sure how much everyone wants to spend—especially when friends insist on treating you even when you say it’s not necessary, because group dynamics can be unpredictable. Choose a reliable neighborhood spot with welcoming vibes and solid raw fish, like Zen 16 Sushi Cafe in Harford County.
The spacious, simply decorated dining area has enough room for groups to settle in comfortably, a straightforward layout that doesn’t feel cramped, and consistently good sushi. Fill the table with everything from straightforward nigiri to generous, shareable rolls like the volcano roll or Philadelphia roll, all featuring flavorful yellowtail sashimi and satisfyingly large portions that make the value clear.
Mucho Gusto Bel Air
$$ | (443) 299-6770 | WEBSITE
If you have a mutual love for authentic flavors and attentive service, Mucho Gusto Bel Air is the elevated Mexican spot in Bel Air for you. Everything on the menu comes with that homemade taste, like the queso fundido and homemade chips. Any dish you get, such as the carne asada, offers a slight twist compared to typical American Mexican cuisine, but is priced on the expensive side. And, the waitstaff’s quick thinking will probably make your meal feel safe and enjoyable (in a good way).
As for appetizers, the Birria sliders are the best thing here. They’re delicious, flavorful, and come with a positive atmosphere for dining.
Friendly’s
$ | (410) 838-8565 | WEBSITE
Friendly’s at Harford Mall sets the standard for family-friendly dining so high, it practically touches the clouds. For the same price as a typical fast-food meal, you can treat the whole crew to burgers, fries, and enough amazing ice cream to make everyone’s day. But a visit here is not just affordable—the service is downright exceptional. Staff treat you like family, with the manager checking in multiple times to ensure everything’s perfect. The ice cream is creamy and fantastic.
And if you wanted to add a birthday party celebration or just linger over sundaes with friends, that welcoming atmosphere makes every moment worthwhile.
Chili’s Grill & Bar
$ | (410) 638-2992 | WEBSITE
Everything at this Bel Air spot is satisfying (especially the chicken tenders with honey mustard if you’re craving them). But know that no matter what, you’re going to get good quality food—from the seafood steak sizzling plates to the comforting mac and cheese—and those southwest egg rolls, complete with that perfect crispy crunch. Their meals run about $15-$25, but for generous portions of consistently tasty American fare, it’s definitely reasonable.
A visit here is a great way to have a solid, casual meal without paying nearly as much as you would at some fancier sit-down spots, and servers like Hannah make sure you leave happy.
Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers
$ | (443) 567-7227 | WEBSITE
Bel Air has plenty of fast food options, from burger joints to taco stands, and even places that specialize in fried chicken sandwiches. The best chicken fingers in the area, however, are at Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers. We’d come here just for the Cane’s sauce (either for dipping or slathered on everything), which is truly amazing, but you should also take advantage of their fresh, not frozen chicken.
It comes with crinkled cut fries that are perfectly crispy and Texas toast that’s buttery and warm. The homemade tea and lemonade are refreshing additions to the meal. The restaurant itself is clean with nice decor, and the staff is fast, friendly, and upbeat. While it might be a bit overhyped and priced a little high, it’s still a great place for a fresh and tasty meal.
Starbucks
$ | (667) 454-2988 | WEBSITE
While this Starbucks location has the casual coffee basics covered, its Bel Air spot brings a more welcoming experience that’s still reliably efficient. This place focuses on friendly customer service, which means there’s a whole lot of other stuff happening besides just pouring drinks. But even with helpful touches like drink samples and tumbler explanations in the mix, the staff stands out.
There’s professional assistance from Sam, knowledgeable guidance from Tami, and excellent overall helpfulness. All you have to do is wait a few minutes for it all to come your way, even on the occasional slower day when drinks might taste slightly off but the kindness remains.
