Esposende stretches along Portugal’s northern coast, hugging the Atlantic. In other words, it’s a seaside feast. So when hunting for the perfect meal here, you might feel like a lone surfer scanning an endless horizon. But whether you crave the freshest grilled fish, a cozy tavern for petiscos, or a pastelaria that feels like a local secret, don’t just follow the scent of salt air. Instead, start with our list.
Peppermint (Peppermint Brunch . Sushi)
Generally speaking, beachside brunch spots can be about as predictable as the tide schedule. But the experience at Peppermint is different. This is a lovely place with a beautiful terrace, and only enough space along the rail for a perfect view of the incredible beach and sea. Each visit comes with your choice of breakfast options, a sushi selection, beautiful presentation of dishes, and service level (even the basic attention is exceptional for those accustomed to indifference).
Shore House
Between the modern facility, welcoming terrace, and sea view stretching toward the horizon, Shore House feels like a sleek glass box that washed ashore and started serving really good Portuguese fusion food. Which, now that we think about it, would be an excellent indie film setting. This spot works especially well for a relaxed lunch with friends, or anytime you want to enjoy a meal while watching the waves roll in.
Just make sure that the crispy tofu and rice mushrooms seaweeds are on your table.
Chic & Doce
Besides a quiet morning to yourself, one of the best ways to spend €4 is the homemade croissant at Chic & Doce. Like the original cozy spot locals love, this location serves a few different sweet treats like sandwiches and pastries. But as the name suggests, the main attraction is the flaky, buttery pastry with perfectly crisp layers. Even though a “small” coffee is a satisfying sip, make sure to add a few homemade sweets to your order.
O Vermelhinho
O Vermelhinho is where you should meet friends for a quick lunch or relax with a late afternoon gin before catching the sunset. This Portuguese spot overlooks the Cávado river, the terrace is perfect for river-watching, and there’s always a gentle breeze coming off the water. It’ll be hard to not feel completely at ease while you order the francesinha, or a passion fruit sangria. There’s wheelchair accessible seating throughout, in case you feel like enjoying the view while you eat.
La petite Simone
No matter when you visit, this popular spot along the Camino is likely to have a steady stream of diners. Fortunately the warm owner keeps things moving smoothly, so come ready to enjoy the welcoming atmosphere. Beyond the impeccable hygiene and attentive service that strives to create a memorable experience, this restaurant offers a cozy setting perfect for a relaxing meal. Keep in mind there are occasional minor hiccups with drinks, but the overall dining experience makes it a must-visit.

This seafood spot has serious coastal pedigree. The kitchen team maintains impeccable hygiene standards, while the front-of-house staff provides wonderfully organized and friendly service. But what they’re creating here is decidedly authentic. You’ll find fantastic examples of jarred fish and other seafood dishes, as well as consistently delicious flavors throughout the menu. There’s a great ambiance with lovely views, and the whole experience feels wonderfully curated.
We don’t know how they make everything so consistently excellent, but it’s worth returning for.
Pastelaria Marisita
If you want to spend a shockingly small amount of money on a meal, Pastelaria Marisita is generally a good way to go. While €8 is practically nothing, the Bacalhau à Brás here is a fantastic deal for a generous portion of fresh cod with eggs and potatoes, plus a side salad and bread. You can also order individual items like cod cakes or croissants if you don’t want a full meal, and they offer a variety of breakfast plates and pastries.
Pastelaria Marisita is certainly nicer than your average city-center cafe, but it’s still casual and friendly.
O Mudo Restaurant (O Mudo Restaurante)

It’s difficult to neatly categorize this gem in the fishing district. It’s a seafood restaurant, but also a celebration of local Portuguese cooking. It has brilliant fish specialties, but also standout meat dishes like the potatoes cooked with their skin. We’ll just call it one of our favorite places to eat, relax, and soak in the atmosphere.
Grab seats at the simple wooden tables, or in the cozy dining room with its maritime touches, and ask your server about what fresh catches they’re featuring that day. Then pair a glass—or a bottle—of local wine with the coastal shrimp that bursts with flavor or the octopus with tender, smoky notes, which has our vote for best seafood in Esposende.

People come to this welcoming restaurant for all sorts of reasons: enjoying a casual dinner with family, celebrating a small milestone, and savoring authentic Italian flavors (which is just another way of saying enjoying a great meal). But the main reason to come is for the pizza and pasta. The menu features everything from classic margherita pizzas and fresh salads to the chef’s style tagliatelli, generous calzones, and the best pizza we’ve eaten in the region.
The ones made with perfect crust and quality toppings restore your faith in Esposende’s Italian dining scene.
Dunas Bar
Dunas Bar takes its name from the nearby coastal dunes, and we’d like to thank nature for inspiring this beachside spot. Some things—like the preguinho sandwich and scrambled eggs—are only available during the day, so if you’ve been looking for an excuse to extend your beach visit, you now have one. A lot of people grab snacks and drinks to go, but this place also has counter seating and a few tables.
Head to the nearby beach or stick around for occasional live music afterwards if you don’t have plans later.
Sei Lá Coffee Shop
The team at Sei Lá wants to make sure you’re satisfied, and this means they’ll let you sample almost any topping combination, as if you’re at an ice cream shop. Can’t decide between chocolate sauce and caramel drizzle? A small taste from a sample spoon, and you’ll know the obvious choice is caramel. You’ll have to pick your base too. We always go for the waffle and either the fresh berries or crunchy nuts.
There’s not much more to the space than a cozy handful of tables and a view of the river, and many people enjoy their treats on the terrace.
