Nestled in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where the Menominee River carves its path and old mining shafts whisper history, Iron Mountain might be one of the most unexpectedly delicious destinations in the entire Midwest. And it also has more hearty, soul-warming restaurants than any hungry traveler knows what to do with.
Spud’s Bistro
$ | (906) 774-7831 | WEBSITE
Yes, $25 pizzas might seem steep for Iron Mountain, but we appreciate that Spud’s Bistro is more than just a basic pizza joint with predictable pepperoni and bored teenagers scrolling phones. People here are actually enjoying meals, and if you can believe it, conversing. The place skews quaint, but not in a generic, chain restaurant kind of way. There are cozy, welcoming tables where anyone can sit and a selection of local beers behind the bar.
It’s friendly, charming, and gives off the energy of a well-loved neighborhood spot in Kingsford.
Polly’s Underground Pub
$ | (906) 774-1170 | WEBSITE
We’re now entering the Polly’s Underground Pub portion of the list, which is to say, we’re at the end. Polly’s is the latest in a long line of Prohibition-era pubs that are quickly erasing all traces of authentic dive bar culture in Iron Mountain. Is Polly’s even a proper pub? It doesn’t matter—it’s a good pub, full of friendly locals who think burritos are tourist attractions.
And yet, this underground-themed gem still manages to be slightly better than other properties, simply because there are pool tables and darts you can stare at while you contemplate if you’re part of the fun.
Wendy’s
$ | (906) 779-0921 | WEBSITE
Wendy’s earns the reliable title of Just Another Fast-Food Joint. Situated in a typical suburban strip mall (RIP originality), this burger-and-fries spot (there are more square patties here than a geometry textbook) is a fine pitstop on a quick lunch run, but there’s nothing you can’t find at the next drive-thru over. There’s a decent Baconator on the menu, fresh sea salt fries when they’re hot, and friendly employees chatting between orders. Beyond that though, we struggle to stay excited.
The service can be hit or miss—sometimes you get that helpful new register person, other times you catch staff scrolling phones. Still, the food is usually correct, the place is clean, and you’ll leave satisfied without waiting forever or dealing with messed-up orders. It’s a preferred option when you just need something fast and tasty, but don’t expect any surprises.
Spiro’s Downtown Restaurant
$ | (906) 774-3499 | WEBSITE
Don’t look now, but Iron Mountain has turned into a cozy dining district. The latest addition to the comfort-food lineup is Spiro’s Downtown Restaurant. The establishment has regular visitors who’ve been coming for years, enjoying their meals and recommending the place, so it was only a matter of time before it made the best-of list. Is this a perfectly nice restaurant with solid French Onion soup and a menu where the waitstaff is well-informed about options to accommodate dietary needs? Yes.
Is it also pretty indistinguishable from other nearby cozy spots with many good sandwich choices and a warm atmosphere? Also yes.
Moose Jackson Cafe
$ | (906) 776-2233 | WEBSITE
Moose Jackson Cafe is one of those spots that thinks as long as you get people caffeinated enough, no one will notice the cozy coffee shop cliches paraded as charm. And by ‘cliches’ we mean generic rustic wood accents, predictable chalkboard menus, and underwhelming grab-and-go lunch specials. It’s also important to note that no matter where you are in Moose Jackson, you’re less than six inches away from the nearest overpriced pastry, so watch your wallet.
And while you’re at it, just turn around and leave.
Carlos Cantina
$ | (906) 774-6355 | WEBSITE
Welcome to Iron Mountain’s happy place. Carlos Cantina is where you go when you’ve been driving through the Upper Peninsula for hours and need something to warm you up from the inside out. Carlos Cantina is bustling, easy to get into, and right in the heart of town, making it the ideal spot to refuel and find your comfort before heading back out on the road. Also, servers here hand out chips and salsa like they’re free. And if you order the right burrito, they definitely are.
Holiday Kitchen
$ | (906) 776-3287 | WEBSITE
Holiday Kitchen is all about three words: Country Fried Steak. Come any time of day, get comfortable with some crispy French fries, bring the whole family for dinner, and stick around for dessert because their bread basket appetizer is a must-try. Holiday Kitchen might not be much of a late-night spot but for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it’s a destination that you need to work into your routine—especially if you have guests visiting from out of town.
Sol Blu Lounge & TapRoom
$$ | (906) 828-1880 | WEBSITE
No introduction is necessary here, but we’ll give one anyway: Sol Blu Lounge & TapRoom is the most recognizable lounge in Iron Mountain and probably the Upper Peninsula (maybe Michigan?) and ground zero for all things cozy nightlife. And with a comfortable lounge, live music, a wine room, and a taproom featuring local brews, it’s not being dethroned anytime soon. Just avoid the late weekend nights, when tourists and locals pack the room for those surprisingly good late-night pizzas.
And somehow, surprisingly, their beer selection is quite exceptional. Come on a weeknight for conversation and walk away thrilled. And pleasantly buzzed.
Millie’s Market
$ | (906) 779-8363 | WEBSITE
Still craving a classic pasty? Look no further, Millie’s Market is open and it’s literally the exact same spot. And that’s not an exaggeration. The casual space is a true lunch destination with outdoor seating, take-out options, and cheerful service. Most visits are quick meals and lines to order regularly wrap up inside. That said, the best sandwiches in town are served here.
Don’t be surprised if the cheesy bread randomly elevates your club sandwich or you end the meal sipping a dark chocolate caramel brownie milkshake.
Bakery Shoppe
$ | (906) 774-5000 | WEBSITE
You wake up Saturday morning, you don’t know where you are, and there’s a text in your phone that reads ‘Jenny from Bakery Shoppe.’ Assume you went to the bakery. The classic family spot has been around for years, but luckily, has remained unchanged otherwise—good news for those seeking baked goods that are just full of real butter and chocolate.
The atmosphere isn’t fancy by any means, and there’s a decent chance someone will offer you a free sample without asking first, but generally speaking, you’re in for a sweet time.
Damian’s Pasta Works
$ | (906) 774-3058 | WEBSITE
You’re probably at Damian’s Pasta Works because you’re too hungry to realize it’s not a sit-down restaurant and you’re under the impression that the 16-inch thin-crust pizza is calling your name. Damian’s could be any take-out pasta joint anywhere in the Midwest, which also means it’s quite reliable. It also benefits from having a spacious and beautiful interior perfect for events and a great location with ample parking where dozens of families finally decide to take off their coats and gather.
Main Street Pizza – Iron Mountain
$ | (906) 774-5500 | WEBSITE
If you’ve ever craved the kind of pizza you’d find in a classic neighborhood joint, you might recognize Main Street Pizza. This Iron Mountain spot took over a small storefront and immediately made it the one thing chain restaurants can’t: authentic. Gone are the sterile counters and generic menus, replaced by a cozy seating area with some booths that feels like grabbing a slice in your hometown pizzeria.
On busy nights, the small space gets lively, and the accommodating staff are known to keep things moving with a smile. The best option is the veggie pizza, featuring generous toppings, a crispy crust, and that hot, flavorful taste that hits the mark fabulously for those craving real pizzeria-style pizza.
Blackstone Pizza Co
$ | (906) 774-3200 | WEBSITE
Who doesn’t want to grab a slice at a pizza joint that nails the basics with such consistent quality? This pizza-focused spot does, in fact, offer some standout items, like the famous stuffed cheese bread, pizza wings, and the next-level BLT pizza with its fresh Caesar topping. But ultimately there’s not much separating Blackstone from other reliable pizza places in town.
If you drop in here on the way home or place a large order in advance, you’ll be satisfied, but no one comes to Iron Mountain just for Blackstone Pizza Co.
Mayme’s Bar
$ | (906) 774-9828 | WEBSITE
Tucked away from the main drag, the crowd at this aggressively unpretentious dive is comprised mostly of regulars and the overflow from fancier spots nearby. The atmosphere can be cozy sometimes, but the space is so comfortably intimate, that most people end up sitting around talking about how good the pizza is instead of bothering to order more.
Solbergs Greenleaf Sports Bar & Grill
$ | (906) 774-4600 | WEBSITE
We appreciate any sports bar that delivers on its promises, and Solbergs Greenleaf certainly does. This Iron Mountain staple has been around long enough to earn its reputation, and for good reason, it’s consistently busy. The spacious, welcoming atmosphere is perfect for families to settle in and enjoy a meal together, whether it’s a casual dinner or a weekend outing. The Friday fish fry is legendary, and some regulars here order it religiously.
That said, the most impressive aspect of this place is its fantastic food quality. So instead of your usual bar fare, go for the perfectly cooked cod with golden, bubbly breading, or the crispy chicken cranberry walnut wrap, which is packed with flavor. The portions are huge, the service is phenomenal and attentive, and while prices lean toward the higher side, you absolutely get what you pay for. It’s a reliable choice for a great meal, every time.
151 Thai Bistro
$ | (906) 774-2462 | WEBSITE
151 Thai Bistro was one of the first Iron Mountain restaurants to offer authentic Thai cuisine. It’s also the first place I recommend when someone asks where to find gluten-free and dairy-free options… in a cozy spot right in town. Taking over a former diner that absolutely no one frequented, the current space feels welcoming and familiar.
Which is to say, it’s a fairly intimate setting with soft lighting, regulars enjoying their Mongolian beef and crab rangoons, and a few newcomers who haven’t yet discovered this isn’t your average takeout spot.
Jean Kay’s Pasties
$ | (906) 774-0430 | WEBSITE
Finally making use of a prime Iron Mountain location, Jean Kay’s Pasties is a long-standing local favorite and, at the very least, a lot better than the generic fast food it outshines. With a cozy, welcoming interior and friendly staff throughout, Jean Kay’s is a bit unassuming but earns points for providing the area with the authentic pasty experience it craves. Are the pasties good? Absolutely.
They have delectable flaky crusts, tasty fillings like the breakfast bacon and egg or savory chicken and broccoli options, and generous portions that leave you satisfied. Also, they offer both cooked and partially frozen varieties if you want to take some home.
The Ice Cream Barn
$ | (906) 828-1435 | WEBSITE
The Ice Cream Barn is where you go when you’ve just finished a long day and realize you’re too serious for whatever is going on in your life (and need to address that issue ASAP). Their fantastic Cedar Crest ice cream comes in an impressive variety of flavors, and the prices are reasonable enough to justify trying a few. There’s plenty of space for the kids to run around if you need to check your phone while they play on the tractors.
The Ice Cream Barn might be simple, but the feel is right (read: charming cows) and the staff will almost certainly give you a friendly smile for no reason. Your jumping-off point for an evening of family fun lies here.
Wild Horse Saloon
$ | (906) 828-2243 | WEBSITE
If you were to look up “welcoming and delicious refuge” in the dictionary, you would absolutely find Wild Horse Saloon. This is where you go after a long day (or a celebration with family) to realize the power of good food and friendly service. Everyone at Wild Horse Saloon is dead-set on enjoying expertly prepared burgers and pizza, and they’re very good on their word.
