STATESIDE DELI
$ | (517) 853-1100 | WEBSITE
Once upon a time, finding a genuine New York-style deli in Michigan seemed like a pipe dream. Those days are over, thanks to Stateside Deli. This sandwich spot isn’t where you go if you like your portions dainty, your soup bland, or your waitstaff indifferent. It is where you go if you like towering sandwiches, standout matzo ball soup, and your occasional all-day breakfast item like the Happy Hash with basted eggs. There’s also a welcoming outdoor area if you want to dine with your pet.
Cash-only.
Leaf Salad Bar
$ | (517) 580-8871 | WEBSITE
Okemos might not be the first destination that comes to mind for a fresh salad experience, but it is home to Leaf Salad Bar, a customizable institution that’s been satisfying locals for years. While you can always expect large, fresh salads and helpful staff here, what makes Leaf Salad Bar so special is their wide variety of fresh vegetables and dressings and the extremely high chance of discovering a new favorite combination with their tasty macaroni chili.
Social Sloth | Cafe & Catering
$ | (517) 253-0240 | WEBSITE
Social Sloth Cafe & Catering is a cozy spot that promotes a slow and mindful approach to life. There’s a small dining area up front and a welcoming atmosphere throughout that warms up early. While this place is family-friendly, it’s very inclusive of everyone.
There’s a limited but delicious selection of dishes, including favorites like lentil soup, chicken, kofta, and a cheese sandwich—the latter of which is usually satisfying enough that you’d only need one before settling in to enjoy your fully relaxed meal with Turkish desserts and coffee.
Ahlan Restaurant
$ | (517) 381-2311 | WEBSITE
Everybody’s go-to dinner spot becomes predictable at some point, and when that moment arrives, head to Ahlan. The Okemos Mediterranean restaurant is one of the most satisfying meals in town. It’s modest from the street, but inside, there’s a cozy dining area, a bustling open kitchen, and a friendly owner serving generous portions all evening long. Also, you get warm pita bread every time you order a meal. Good food is real, and it’s at Ahlan ready to delight.
King Phở
$ | (517) 977-1520 | WEBSITE
Open since 2020, King Phở’s arrival in Okemos signaled a few things. For one, it once again solidified the area as a legitimate destination for authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Secondly, it allowed us to put orders like “King Pho bowl-large” and “Cow Tendon Pho” into our regular rotation. Mostly though, it gave Lansing its best new pho spot in years. King Phở is one of those places that’s so consistent, with such generous portions, you can have whatever kind of meal you came looking for.
Want a classic, perfectly balanced broth that’s not too salty or anise-heavy? Post-up with their signature pho all night? Try something adventurous like the tender, perfectly cooked Cow Tendon Pho? It’s all possible at King Phở.
Yum Japan
$ | (517) 515-5180 | WEBSITE
This popular Okemos Mall food court spot has been around for years and is the kind of place that takes a quick meal from decent to delicious in a short amount of time. The simple food court setup is straightforward, but there’s a great selection of Asian dishes up front and a menu featuring some of the best orange chicken and noodles in the area.
The portions are large and affordable—you can easily get a satisfying meal for under $15—and the friendly, efficient staff creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that keeps customers coming back. Whether you’re grabbing a classic teriyaki combo or trying something new like their highly recommended crab Rangoon, Yum Japan delivers quick, satisfying meals perfect for any mall visit.
T & D Coney Grill
$ | (517) 347-9066 | WEBSITE
Tucked away in a strip mall that’s seen better days, T & D Coney Grill is an Okemos institution, and the go-to spot for breakfast in the area. The crowd generally skews older and is far more down-to-earth and unpretentious than the trendy brunch places popping up elsewhere. That said, this place can get packed any morning of the week. Known for their breakfast plates that are just mountains of perfectly cooked food, T & D is easily your fastest route to a satisfying meal.
They also have a steady stream of hot coffee if you’re still able to hold a mug correctly.
Char’s Jerk Chicken & More
$ | (517) 488-7835 | WEBSITE
We appreciate any restaurant that delivers on its spicy promises, and Char’s Jerk Chicken & More has that going for it. This popular Okemos spot is well-established by local standards, and for that reason alone, it’s busy. The straightforward space is cozy and welcoming, which is ideal for people to sit down and enjoy a meal without any fuss. The jerk chicken is very popular, and some people are here for the oxtail unironically.
That said, the most satisfying aspect of this place is its excellent home-cooked flavor. Go for the tender jerk chicken that falls off the bone, or the chicken rastapast, made with great seasoning and care.
Noodles and Company
$ | (517) 347-1400 | WEBSITE
Noodles and Company is all about three words: Pad Thai perfection. Come lunchtime, get cozy with some gluten-free noodles, add tofu for protein, and stick around until you’ve tried the shrimp version that’s simply exceptional. Noodles and Company might not be much of a fine dining destination but on weekdays, it’s a spot that you need to work into your routine—especially if you have dietary restrictions to navigate.
BIGGBY COFFEE
$ | (517) 381-2378 | WEBSITE
There are only so many overpriced artisanal lattes and sterile chain coffee shops you can tolerate before you start actively searching for something real. Put your phone away, and go to BIGGBY COFFEE. The Okemos spot gets busy during morning rush, but it’s still the antithesis to the cold, transactional coffee culture that’s taken over so many places.
BIGGBY’s atmosphere is pleasant and unpretentious, with people actually chatting at tables or outside on the patio, and always ready for a friendly hello. Delicious, affordable sandwiches like the Turkey Havarti and perfectly prepared cappuccinos don’t hurt either, especially with the free parking making it easy to stay awhile.
Paradise Biryani Pointe
$ | (517) 483-2280 | WEBSITE
After settling into its convenient strip mall location, Paradise Biryani Pointe has become a go-to Indian spot in Okemos. Yes, the spice levels can be mild even for standard orders, but we appreciate that Paradise is more than just a four-walled room filled with generic curries and families rushing through meals. People here are truly enjoying themselves, and if you can believe it, lingering over dessert. The place skews casual, but not in a rushed, fast-food kind of way.
There are clean, organized tables, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere throughout the dining area. It’s friendly, kid-friendly, and gives off the energy of a well-attended family dinner in a comfortable home.
Red Haven Farm to Table Restaurant
$$$ | (517) 679-6309 | WEBSITE
If you remember the creative gap left when Red Haven stopped daily service, you might recognize their special event dinners. The farm-to-table gem took over the occasional dining scene and immediately made it the one thing ordinary restaurants couldn’t: extraordinary. Gone are the predictable menus and casual meals, replaced by themed four-course experiences that feel like celebrating in a rustic-modern barn.
On weekends, the mushroom dinners get creative, and attentive staff are known to personalize service, but the best option is the chef’s showcase events, featuring farm-fresh ingredients, culinary journeys, and memorable touches.
