You were managing just fine with the usual downtown spots and suburban chains. Then you realized you wanted real flavor, not just convenience. Enter Rochester’s dining scene: a surprising collection of over a dozen exceptional restaurants that deliver memorable meals without the pretension or Manhattan prices.
Thurston seafood (Not Fish Market)
$ | (585) 448-0049 | WEBSITE
Thurston Seafood is as straightforward as it gets—it’s a no-frills spot that serves up huge, flaky fish in a crispy cornmeal batter, all pieces are fresh and seasoned just right. Literally anything from their fryer is worth ordering, but you should always get the fish fry dinner. Ask for extra tartar sauce on the side and a squeeze of lemon, and then go ahead and add an order of their fried shrimp.
They also have chicken wings and fries here, but this place is best for a hearty meal while sharing stories with family over a perfectly fried plate that’s piled high with golden-brown pieces and served with a side of crisp coleslaw.
Squatcho’s
$ | (585) 434-5002 | WEBSITE
With its bright, family-friendly atmosphere, colorful murals of local landmarks, warm pendant lighting, and open kitchen where you can watch pizzas being tossed, Squatcho’s has the welcoming vibe of “your favorite neighborhood spot that just happens to be vegan-forward.” Fortunately, it’s only delicious discoveries ahead when dining here, particularly if you bring the whole family.
No visit to this Rochester eatery is complete without the vegan wings (crispy, saucy, and the best many have ever had), the garlic knots (soft, buttery, and generously herbed), and the standout pizza, which features a perfectly charred crust and creative toppings that push the boundaries of plant-based flavor, in a great way. Balance out the savory feast by ordering a thick, creamy milkshake and pair it with the vegetarian stew, which comforts exactly how it sounds.
Sultan Cuisine and Bakery Restaurant
$ | (585) 241-0081 | WEBSITE
If the name Sultan Cuisine and Bakery Restaurant sounds familiar, it’s because this Middle Eastern spot also appears in our guide to the best restaurants in Rochester. Both the grilled meats and fresh salads in this welcoming space are equally great—start your meal with the addictive tabouli salad, or the highly recommended Fattoush salad with its bright lemon dressing. On the meat front, the $25 mashawi plate is a great value, since most dishes on their own will run you $12-$18 each.
Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with the chicken shawarma, the smooth hummus with homemade bread, or the best toum you’ll find anywhere. Close out your meal with the baklava or other homemade desserts, which are anything but an afterthought.
Chili Hots
$ | (585) 889-1770 | WEBSITE
If you can get past the cramped parking lot shared with neighboring businesses, this unassuming Rochester spot is worth pulling off I-490 for. Pretty much everything from the straightforward menu hits the mark, from the crispy fries to the juicy chicken. The offerings stay consistent, but the Buffalo chicken finger salad is always available, and it should definitely be on your table.
Other highlights include the Mediterranean salad with tender chicken, the absolutely delicious white zweigle hotdog loaded with chili sauce and onions, and the fresh, excellent garbage plates. And don’t skip the sides—the flavorful macaroni salad in the cheeseburger combo is one of our favorite bites in the whole area.
Dunkin’
$ | (585) 338-1189 | WEBSITE
You might not expect to find a 24/7 coffee and doughnut shop worth stopping for in a busy Rochester strip, but that’s Dunkin’ for you. Go there for a quick morning pick-me-up and prepare for a straightforward experience. Start off with their great coffee, which is reliably solid, and the toasted sesame bagel—we bet you’ll appreciate the simple satisfaction. $3 will get you a basic coffee and snack to satisfy a craving for something quick and convenient, which is exactly what this spot delivers.
Most items here travel well, so this is also a great takeout spot when you’re rushing through your day.
The Retreat
$ | (585) 227-9100 | WEBSITE
This wouldn’t be a proper Rochester restaurant guide without a quintessential dive bar in the ranks. The Retreat has been serving up cheap wings and cold local beers for years, and the value (and flavor) is still outstanding. It works for any occasion—a casual hangout with friends, a game night, or a quick bite after work, with friendly service that’s likely to include a welcoming nod from the bartender upon walking in.
Grab a seat and immediately order the gators breath wings while you complete the simple task of choosing a few items from the straightforward menu. The juicy burgers should be on your table, as should a few other wing selections that catch your eye, plus a cold pint from the local tap selection. Skip the basic fries, and save room for another round of those addictive wings instead.
Cristo’s Wood Fired Pizza & Pasta
$$ | (585) 622-9000 | WEBSITE
If you ask three Rochester regulars about their favorite dish at Cristo’s, you’ll get four answers. That’s because across its hearty menu, this cozy Italian spot delivers consistently excellent wood-fired pizzas and pastas with a classic touch. We’re partial to the rich chicken marsala, the earthy mushroom truffle pizza, and the generous vegetarian pasta options, but we’ve never had a miss here.
This also happens to be a great place to unwind on a Wednesday night, with the $15 house red, a local craft beer on tap, or a live singer’s set delivered with the warmth of the wood oven to get the evening started. It’s nearly impossible to find easy parking, but we can almost always snag a walk-in table for an early dinner in the dining room, which is our favorite place to sit anyway.
Pat’s Coffee Mug
$ | (585) 244-2239 | WEBSITE
Don’t be fooled by the unassuming storefront nestled between a laundromat and a hardware store. You’ll experience a genuine neighborhood transformation as you step into this Rochester breakfast spot’s warm, inviting space. A bustling counter in the middle of the compact kitchen churns out steaming, perfectly cooked eggs that pair wonderfully with whichever daily special catches your eye—they’re all reliable, especially the Thursday chicken chili.
Feel free to indulge in the breakfast classics here, our favorite part of the menu other than the specials. We’re devoted to the fluffy buttermilk pancakes, which come with melting butter and real maple syrup at no extra charge. For something more substantial, the hearty breakfast sandwich with crispy bacon and sharp cheddar is our go-to order.
The Vesper
$$ | (585) 454-1996 | WEBSITE
A far cry from the bustling downtown Rochester scene, The Vesper is nestled in a comfortable and inviting corner of the city. If a lavish multi-course tasting menu isn’t in the cards, book a table and request a seat near the bar where you can watch the skilled bartenders craft creative mixed drinks—it’s the perfect setting for celebrating special occasions or enjoying a night out with friends.
We always order the lobster Mac and cheese, which is basically a decadent twist on a comfort classic, and the perfectly cooked NY strip with sweet potato hash. Pair them with one of the attentive staff’s beverage suggestions and enjoy your exceptional dining experience.
Barnard Banquet Hall
$$ | (585) 663-1250 | WEBSITE
When you walk into a banquet hall and it’s filled with families celebrating milestones, your event is either going to be memorable or forgettable, instantly. At Barnard Banquet Hall, it’s definitely the former. The star of the experience at this versatile venue is undoubtedly the buffet service, which at $45 per person is about $10 less than comparable downtown spots, but you’re in Rochester, after all, and it’s an incredible value.
The delicious food is served generously across updated stations and offered simply with attentive refills and excellent all-you-can-eat options throughout the event. If you’re planning a celebration and feeling ambitious, invest $5,000 for the full party package, where a whole team including Dave, Nancy, and Donna is brought in, creating a seamless experience with gracious flexibility and sliced like a well-oiled machine for a make-your-own-memories adventure.
Go for any occasion, since the restaurant is open for gatherings of all types.
Agatina’s Restaurant
$$ | (585) 426-0510 | WEBSITE
Visit Agatina’s on a weekend evening and settle into their dining room, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a family-run trattoria in Rome, even though you’re just off a Monroe County road lined with minivans and sedans. Just focus on the warm lighting, the checkered tablecloths, and the bustling open kitchen while nibbling on the complimentary homemade Italian bread.
And if the main dining area is lively, the cozy back room with framed family photos and daily specials recited by your server feels equally welcoming. You could very easily fill up on the generous bread basket, but make sure to save room for an appetizer and an entree—the chicken cutlets are straightforward but cooked flawlessly, and the Halibut Scampi comes in a garlic-butter sauce you’ll be sopping up with bread until the plate is clean.
The Alfredo sauce is a standout, rich and creamy without being heavy, and the Calamari arrives crispy with a tangy homemade stewed tomato sauce for dipping. For dessert, the Lemon Marscapone Cake provides a light, slightly sour finish that cuts through the meal’s richness perfectly. With reasonable prices—most entrees hover around $22–$28—and service that’s attentive without being intrusive, it’s no wonder a party of eight recently left without a single complaint.
Whether you’re with family (the staff happily accommodates children’s orders) or friends, Agatina’s delivers authentic Italian flavors in a setting that makes everyone feel at home.
Black & Blue Steak and Crab, Rochester, NY
$$$$ | (585) 421-8111 | WEBSITE
This vibrant, upscale Rochester steakhouse consistently delivers on its promise of attentive service (don’t miss the friendly guidance from Bella) and a reliably delicious rotating selection of seafood. But what keeps us returning is the Lobster and Crab Mac and Cheese, which is hands down the standout on the menu, as well as the perfectly cooked scallops, both celebrated for their rich, satisfying flavors.
Head here for date night and enjoy the perfect lighting from the cozy dining room while savoring a pumpkin budino and catching up with a big table of family or friends.
Angelinas
$$ | (585) 435-4039 | WEBSITE
This Southwedge gem might have a very cozy vibe, but they make some very serious burgers. Open in a trendy yet homey bistro-style space, Angelinas serves a variety of options that are inspired by upscale NYC dining, which means the cold ratatouille appetizer and the juicy burgers actually sit in harmony next to each other on the menu.
Everything here tastes ridiculously flavorful thanks to the housemade sauces and fresh ingredients, the perfectly cooked fish specials, and the burgers themselves that are huge and meant for sharing. In addition to the extra-loaded burgers, you can get flavorful fish specials, and donuts for dessert—including the Gnudis that are light and fluffy perfection we want to savor slowly. No matter which route you go, ordering a side of drinks and a dessert to share is basically a requirement.
Vine & Tap
$ | (585) 695-0849 | WEBSITE
You could just order a glass of wine or a pizza from Vine & Tap in Rochester, but you’d be doing it wrong. The path to success at this charming restaurant is to start with one of their wine flights—you’ll get a lovely aroma of reds and whites every time a server walks by. Make sure to prioritize the live music nights, especially when they offer salsa lessons that fill the space with energy.
If the weather’s nice, ask to sit near the windows overlooking the lake, where the ample parking makes arrival a breeze. The cozy indoor dining room is also great for a relaxed evening, especially one with any of your Rochester friends—it’s considered a hidden gem worth visiting.
New Yu House Chinese Restaurant
$ | (585) 723-8001 | WEBSITE
There are a number of reasons why this Chinese restaurant with dependable staples in Rochester might have become one of the most frequently ordered spots in the area. It could be that it brings consistent quality and very reasonable prices to a neighborhood that appreciates reliable takeout, or the fact that orders always arrive exactly as they should be, or even the generous specials that pack two main entrees in one container.
But we’d argue that the real reason is the sesame chicken, one of the staple items on the restaurant’s menu and among the most satisfying things we’ve eaten—it’s crispy, sweet, and as comforting as a familiar favorite. The Pu Pu platter is also reliably great, as is the moo shu pork. Be prepared for a straightforward experience in a space that shows its age, as the interior looks a little run down but doesn’t detract from the food’s appeal.
New Ethic Pizzeria & Cafe
$ | (585) 623-8231 | WEBSITE
It’s hard to tell whether this bright, open pizzeria is earnestly or casually embracing its inclusive, community-focused vibe, with its simple wooden tables and cheerful chalkboard menus. But the food is certainly no afterthought. Come here for the standout Buffalo chickpea pizza, the flavorful Iggy Popeye, and the crispy jackfruit wings that many call the best they’ve ever tasted, all of which make the friendly service from owner Tony and his team feel genuinely welcoming.
Skip the hesitation and opt instead for a memorable experience that won’t disappoint, even if you’re not vegan, ending your visit feeling like part of the family.
