Nestled in the heart of the Bulkley Valley, Smithers has quietly become one of BC’s most delicious destinations—a vibrant tapestry of farm-to-table newcomers, beloved local institutions, and smoked salmon traditions so rich they could inspire a Netflix documentary. Here are the spots we head to first when dining in this mountain town. And if you’re craving more Northern BC gems, we’ve got a full guide for that, too.
A&W Canada
$ | (250) 847-3700 | WEBSITE
Smithers has no shortage of cozy, sit-down restaurants vying to get you to linger over a long meal. A&W Canada is the most reliable one of the bunch. This fast-food chain first opened in 1956 as a root beer stand in Winnipeg. Now, they’re serving out of a clean, very bright space on the highway that’s very A&W All Grown Up. The highlight at breakfast is a Sausage Egger for about $5, designed to be paired with their excellent coffee that beats nearby Tim Hortons.
We do miss the simpler menus of past decades, but offerings at this A&W—like the satisfying meals, quick bites, and coffee with free refills in a real mug—are just as welcoming as anything at the original.
Smithers Brewing Co.
$$ | (778) 640-2739 | WEBSITE
Although Smithers Brewing Co. is known for its bring-your-own-food policy (they just offer jerky sticks on-site), this local brewery is a destination in its own right. It’s located in a welcoming space with a coffee shop vibe in Smithers where you’ll sip the Hudson Bay ISA, No. 9 the caffebier, and the most refreshing kombucha we’ve ever tried. Smithers Brewing Co.
is the perfect place to come with a couple of friends, enjoy beers brewed on-site, and relax over snacks on the patio with its mist system for hot days.
Daddio’s Family Restaurant
$$ | (250) 847-2255 | WEBSITE
It’s perfectly natural to feel like you’ve found the coziest spot in Smithers at Daddio’s Family Restaurant. You sip homemade lemonade in a warm, inviting glow from pendant lights and eat comfort food that puts a smile on classic family fare, like spaghetti with chicken in mushroom sauce and a calzone stuffed with cheese and toppings. Family-friendly doesn’t mean boring, though.
The cheerful chatter bounces off the wood tables, and staff like Jamie and Rachel weave warmth into every recommendation. It’s all the heart and generosity of a home-cooked meal without skimping on the flavor, so linger over your cheesecake for as long as your appetite allows.
Masa Yama
$$ | (250) 847-8060 | WEBSITE
The original Masa Yama in Smithers makes some of our favorite Japanese food anywhere in the region, and the restaurant’s cozy location follows suit. Despite the reputation surrounding this place, the restaurant manages to still feel like a relaxed neighborhood spot serving sake and very good sushi. The impeccably fresh fish works as a clean, delicate vehicle for Masa Yama’s slightly sweet miso soup.
Their best dish is the nigiri combo, with buttery salmon, sweet shrimp, and a dynamite roll that almost melts in your mouth. And if you’re looking for a great starter option, head straight for their standout tempura and eat the crispy shrimp with a salty soy-ginger dipping sauce.
Dairy Queen Grill & Chill
$ | (250) 847-8806 | WEBSITE
Dairy Queen Grill & Chill is a classic family spot in Smithers, and if you thought this convenient location near elementary schools, an ice rink, and a swimming pool would be anything less than packed with kids, then you probably don’t understand family dynamics.
Between their quick service that keeps the line moving, tables filled with soft-serve treats, and the strong chance you’ll see someone’s birthday party happening here, a visit to Dairy Queen is one of the most consistently reliable family-friendly experiences you can have in town.
Telly’s Grill
$$ | (250) 847-0017 | WEBSITE
Telly’s Grill makes serving delicious food with heart look effortless. The cozy interior of this Smithers spot is warm and inviting (perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings), and the bustling atmosphere feels like a community hub you’ll want to return to again and again. The menu doesn’t appear too different from other local grills at first glance, but don’t let that fool you—it’s exceptional. And that burger with its subtle twist is one of the best you’ll find in northern BC.
We’d eat here every day if we could.
Paul’s Bakery
$ | (250) 847-9742 | WEBSITE
A visit to Paul’s Bakery feels like you stepped into a charming European village bakery, complete with the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries wafting through the air. In reality, you’re in the heart of Smithers, but this cozy little spot with its warm lighting and rustic wooden shelves makes it seem like you’re in a quaint countryside retreat. As for the food, expect delicious baked goods that are perfect for indulging.
Be sure to get the breakfast sandwiches, cream horns, and the cronats for a sweet finish.
Alpenhorn Bistro & Bar
$$ | (250) 847-5366 | WEBSITE
Of the many dining options in Smithers, Alpenhorn Bistro & Bar sits comfortably at the intersection of quality and comfort. This welcoming establishment has built a reputation for consistently good food paired with an ample beer selection. Head straight for the crab corn chowder—it’s the standout dish that regulars keep coming back for.
But if you prefer to explore the variety of great choices on the menu, you can settle into the cozy atmosphere and let the knowledgeable servers guide you through pairings with their excellent service. Whether you’re winding down with non-alcoholic beer options or enjoying the staff’s expertise right up until closing time, Alpenhorn provides that positive dining experience where good food meets friendly service in a comfortable environment.
Tandoori Bistro
$$ | (250) 847-0214 | WEBSITE
Meals at Tandoori Bistro come with a side of overwhelming flavor. The spacious dining room probably helps, and so does the easy parking. This welcoming spot in Smithers offers just walk-in service with ample seating, so every table is filled with people who decided on a whim to eat here. Grab a seat to see sizzling Tandoori platters arriving in clouds of steam, fragrant Lamb Bhuna ladled into ceramic bowls, and crispy Chicken Chilli Dry disappearing like magic.
Half of the room will customize their spice level like a pro and order at least one dish from every section of the menu. Follow their lead with a good mix of curries, rice, and main plates like the popular Tandoori Sizzler and ever-tasty chicken specialties.
The Sausage Factory
$$$ | (250) 847-2861 | WEBSITE
When it comes to Smithers butchers, the field is competitive. But The Sausage Factory has managed to take a reliable destination and turn it into an institution. Their freshly sliced cold cuts melt in your mouth, and their smoked sausage is savory, rich, and the exact right level of smoky.
You can certainly order their deli sandwiches and be happy, but our move is to stick with the great steaks, which are about double the thickness and come with custom butchering, gift baskets, and specialty products.
Steak House On Main
$$ | (250) 847-2828 | WEBSITE
Walking into Steak House On Main feels like entering a cozy neighborhood haven where everyone knows your name. You’ll find comfortable booths with warm lighting, a classic wooden bar that invites conversation, and the welcoming hum of satisfied diners. That said, Steak House On Main is more than just friendly vibes—the food and service are great, too.
We love the hearty spaghetti meatballs, and the chicken Parmesan with spaghetti that essentially functions as a comforting Italian classic with crispy breaded chicken, rich marinara, and perfectly al dente pasta. The tuxedo chocolate cake is a decadent finish worth saving room for, and the liver and onions with bacon offers a satisfyingly savory option. While the fish and chips come with perfectly crispy batter, some might find it a touch too oily for their taste.
At around $18-28 for mains, it’s solid value for homemade cooking served with genuine smiles.
Bugwood Coffee | Cafe
$ | (778) 640-1277 | WEBSITE
In a perfect world, we’d stop by this cozy Smithers cafe every morning. And if you find yourself in this mountain town, please live out this dream for us. The beauty of this cabin-like spot is that you can sip, snack, and linger at your own pace. Starting at opening, head to the counter for an oat flat white with more smooth, balanced flavor than a perfectly tuned guitar.
Throughout the day, the menu expands with single-origin coffees, micro-lot options, and gluten-free treats you can enjoy in their quaint, welcoming space. No drink costs more than $6, plus most of the snacks are easy to share. Keep Smithers’ Bugwood Coffee in mind for your lazy mornings, work sessions, and other meetups with friendly baristas who offer personalized tips for your onward journey.
Subway
$ | (250) 847-4771 | WEBSITE
This sandwich spot in Smithers will cost you about $12 for a footlong (before tax), which is a reasonable price for just about anyone. But if you’re in the mood for a quick, satisfying meal (or grabbing lunch after hiking), Subway is a reliable place to do it. For starters, the sandwiches are fresh and delicious. Expect your order made exactly to your preferences with a perfect mix of sauces and crunchy pickles.
Run by excellent staff including Rajit, we appreciate that a meal at Subway feels less like you’re at a fast-food chain and more like hanging out with friendly people who happen to have a cozy sandwich shop with picturesque mountain views. The convenient parking right outside the door makes it ideal for both solo visits and gatherings with friends.
Blue Water Sushi
$$ | (250) 847-5341 | WEBSITE
Tucked away in a small town, the menu at this sushi spot features favorites like the Supreme platter, Salmon delight “boat,” and spicy tuna bites. You’ve probably had sushi before, but Blue Water Sushi prepares it with such fresh, vibrant flavors that each bite feels like a rediscovery. If you’re looking for a solid introduction, try the spicy sushi combo with a side of War miso soup and grab a seat in the modern, octopus-themed dining room.
For a more relaxed outing, we’d suggest visiting during off-peak hours, but for a lively, quick meal with friendly service, this place delivers.
Foodie Heaven Restaurant
$$ | (250) 877-5137 | WEBSITE
Getting into Foodie Heaven Restaurant, by far the most welcoming dining option in Smithers, is a breeze. Not only making the visit, but physically entering the premises. You’ll just pull into the parking lot next door, walk right in, and step into what feels like a cozy family kitchen that happens to serve a $25 dinner to groups of all sizes. Each meal includes generous portions of garlic prawns with mash, butter chicken, or noodle stir-fry, all prepared behind a simple open kitchen counter.
If enjoying some of the most delicious food in Smithers is on your to-do list, consider Foodie Heaven a worthwhile stop.
Roadhouse
$$ | (250) 847-2101 | WEBSITE
This Smithers favorite has been serving up satisfying meals for years (practically a lifetime in this mountain town) and it still draws just as many hungry customers as it did when it first opened. For the most part, things at Roadhouse haven’t changed much, with crowd favorites like the savory pork belly bites and hearty Korean BBQ bowl still on the menu. Does Roadhouse have steeper competition today for casual comfort food than a decade ago? Absolutely.
But odds are you’ll still be at your table for a satisfying meal, enjoying delicious food and taking in one of the most reliably busy dining spots in town.
