St. Peter may be a small Minnesota town, but its dining scene punches far above its weight. From family-owned institutions that have been perfecting their recipes since the 1980s to innovative newcomers reimagining Midwestern classics, this college town offers surprising culinary depth. Whether you crave a juicy Juicy Lucy burger, farm-to-table Scandinavian fare, or just want to enjoy craft beer and cheese curds on a historic Main Street patio, these spots deliver.
Dairy Queen Grill & Chill
$ | (507) 931-4580 | WEBSITE
Dairy Queen Grill & Chill is bright, bustling, and familiar, but unlike the generic fast-food chain you might remember from childhood, this spot is worth revisiting. “Grill & Chill” in Dairy Queen terms normally refers to locations serving both hot food and frozen treats, and this St. Peter spot channels that classic American energy into its clean, efficient space.
The scent of fresh-grilled burgers and sweet waffle cones lingers as drive-thru lines move quickly and the staff blends Blizzards that are the star of Dairy Queen’s best offering: thick, rich chocolate shakes. They’re very indulgent, but the consistently creamy texture and perfect temperature convince you to savor every sip. And if you and your family need to cool down a bit, Dairy Queen’s well-mixed slushies can help.
Jake’s Pizza of Saint Peter
$ | (507) 934-4944 | WEBSITE
When you walk into Jake’s Pizza of Saint Peter, it feels like stepping into a family reunion. But this neighborhood pizza joint is actually an ideal celebration spot, full of delicious food, accommodating service, and group-friendly spaces.
The restaurant is bright and clean, mainly relying on overhead lighting and pizza-themed decor for atmosphere, with plenty of tables for families, plus a spacious party room if your meal morphs into a birthday celebration after a couple of personal pizzas for the kids and a medium four-meat thin crust for the adults.
Their menu has satisfying options, like the crisp-crust Special pizza, gluten-free alternatives, and accommodating dietary restrictions, whether or not you want to enjoy them at the restaurant or take them to a nearby brewery with their provided to-go cups, plates, and napkins.
Caribou Coffee
$ | (507) 933-1101 | WEBSITE
This St. Peter coffee shop zhuzhes up the American café experience with their cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Pumpkin syrup and pesto egg flatbread appear, but unlike typical coffee chains, you can enjoy these delicious vegetarian options alongside friendly staff who provide amazing service. The overall experience keeps customers coming back regularly, despite a few minor ordering challenges. Caribou Coffee’s location guarantees many regulars inside the simple yet inviting space.
But one sip of their seasonal pumpkin drink or bite of that savory flatbread can charm even the most hurried locals into lingering a little longer.
Tacos El Charrito
$$ | (651) 313-1052 | WEBSITE
Kitschy Mexican tunes drift from the speakers of this always-packed food trailer in the Family Dollar parking lot. And showing up with friends is essential, not just because of the lively street-food scene, but because the portions are huge. Their Al Pastor tacos or Pupusa Revueltas make perfect quick bites, but we also love splitting a generous plate of Carne Asada tacos loaded with marinated steak, fresh cilantro, onions, and that dreamy guacamole salsa.
The cash-only setup naturally makes it perfect for a casual feast, especially if you want to keep the flavors going with more authentic Mexican eats.
Minnesota Wing King
$ | (507) 519-1083 | WEBSITE
Minnesota Wing King was one of St. Peter’s first places to focus on authentic barbecue, but this casual spot was one of the first in the area to use smokers as a canvas for bold flavors. So while this family-friendly restaurant does have tasty traditional sides like creamy mac and cheese and crisp cole slaw, you’re here for the smoked meats. The best one is their succulent brisket, but the pulled pork and ribs are also great.
For a non-meat option, there is also a loaded patio where you can enjoy great drinks while watching the smokers in action.
Blaschko’s Embassy Bar
$ | (507) 934-3903 | WEBSITE
This St. Peter mainstay has been serving up hearty fare and cold drinks since it opened, filling its welcoming space with the sizzle of bourbon-glazed wings, blue cheese-topped burgers, and the zesty kick of their signature Asian zing sauce. That perfectly charred patty piled high with tangy cheese and crisp toppings is especially satisfying after cheering through a nail-biting game on one of their many screens.
It’s great for catching up with friends over beers or grabbing a quick solo bite, but the warm, lively ambiance with its rustic wood accents and friendly chatter also makes Blaschko’s an ideal spot to unwind any day of the week.
3rd Street Tavern
$$ | (507) 934-3314 | WEBSITE
With a name like 3rd Street Tavern, their brisket better be, well, smoked to perfection. But not only does this industrial chic spot in St. Peter know how to smoke up a cut—low and slow for that tender pull—they also know how to properly season one, thoroughly infusing each juicy slice with their signature rub. The smoked half chicken is our favorite, a succulent, flavorful bird that’s smoky, savory, and worth the extra napkins you’ll need after.
And when we say these portions are generous, we mean it—a plate of brisket, if not the half chicken, counts as a whole meal.
River Rock Coffee & Tea
$ | (507) 931-1540 | WEBSITE
Morning comfort and afternoon treats come together at this charming coffee shop in St. Peter. Some items are straightforward like the delicious hand pies and monster cookies. But the breakfast sandwiches show off the kitchen’s skill best, like the quiche with flaky crust and fresh ingredients, or the sweet cardamom latte that perfectly bridges the morning and midday pick-me-up.
At $8-12 per meal, it’s affordable, and the excellent coffee and cozy, well-lit space is a great choice for a relaxing study session, or a catch-up with family and friends over their surprisingly good wine selection.
China Town
$ | (507) 934-5566 | WEBSITE
China Town is another long-standing casual spot in St. Peter with tasty Chinese food. But while we like their plates of fried rice with pork or delightful wontons, their incredible cream cheese wontons (also on our best appetizers list) are why we’re OK dealing with the recent price increases. At one point, China Town even had an all-you-can-eat buffet with regulars who’d make weekly pilgrimages for the garlic sauce specials.
Each order comes with around 8-10 pieces that stay crispy regardless of how long they sit in the sweet cream cheese filling. Chances are, every table will have at least one basket.
Papa Murphy’s | Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza
$ | (507) 934-5555 | WEBSITE
This St. Peter takeout spot is a solid choice for grabbing customizable pizzas to bake at home, with plenty of options for various dietary needs. The friendly staff provides a couple of kid-friendly touches like drawings to keep little ones occupied. However, customers have noticed inconsistency with the sauce amounts in their calzones—sometimes receiving too little or too much, which only becomes apparent once you get home.
A simple secondary quality check for those calzones would make all the difference. For around $15-$25 per pizza, it’s an affordable family dinner solution, especially if you pick up during off-peak hours when the small ordering area isn’t crowded with people waiting for their Friday night pies.
Neisen’s Riverside Sports Bar
$ | (507) 931-7966 | WEBSITE
If you’re looking for the classic sports bar experience in St. Peter, Neisen’s Riverside is the lively, scenic spot that delivers. The relaxed dining area features cozy booths by large windows overlooking the river, with bird feeders attracting constant activity outside. It’s perfect for a casual family meal or a group outing with friends who believe good food and great views make any gathering better, but the atmosphere is also welcoming enough for a quiet dinner by the water.
Their menu highlights include the highly praised fire roasted peach pizza special in July, crispy bacon-topped cheese fries, juicy broasted chicken, and tasty prime rib, with a $15 upgrade adding steak bites and a filling wrap to share. And with friendly, attentive service that never feels rushed, there’s plenty of time to relax and enjoy the awesome scenery between satisfying bites.
Dunkin’
$ | (507) 519-1127 | WEBSITE
The rules of Dunkin’ are simple: bring your appetite and lose yourself in a cup of coffee and a fresh donut. The hot, satisfying donuts and coffee are the main focus of this popular Twin Cities spot’s straightforward menu, and the only decision to make is how you want to customize your order. Our favorite is the classic glazed—fluffy, warm, and perfectly sweet, paired with a smooth, rich coffee that’s consistently fresh and delicious.
The staff is always courteous, and while it’s a popular choice, grabbing a seat is easy thanks to the efficient service and welcoming atmosphere.
Great Wall
$ | (507) 931-8828 | WEBSITE
Great Wall is the comfort food king of Saint Peter. The moment you walk into this Chinese-American staple, the familiar aromas of garlic and soy sauce welcome you like an old friend. From hot wings to dumplings, to beef and broccoli, there are plenty of reliable classics to choose from. The signature dishes are particularly satisfying, like the dumplings described as pillows of aromatic garlic chive love and the super flavorful hot wings.
The straightforward dining room with its practical layout has a cozy feel, perfect for locals to unwind with some familiar favorites after a long day.
Lakeside at Shoreland
$$ | (507) 934-4299 | WEBSITE
This St. Peter mainstay has been a local favorite for years, and is best known for its Buffalo Burger, the signature dish that keeps people coming back. The reputation is well-earned: their juicy patty topped with tangy sauce and crisp lettuce on a toasted bun is consistently satisfying and comes with perfectly seasoned fries. But while the burger is essential, everything delivers, like the previously offered BBQ pulled pork sandwich with its smoky-sweet sauce.
Lakeside’s relaxed, welcoming space is usually filled with groups chatting over meals—the ideal setting for a straightforward, enjoyable dinner.
