While Portland’s food scene often steals the spotlight across the river, Vancouver, WA has quietly cultivated its own remarkable culinary identity. Forget the hype—these are the local establishments where chefs focus not on trends, but on consistently excellent meals that keep the community returning.
Joy Sushi
$$ | (360) 597-3566 | WEBSITE
Joy Sushi is a hidden gem in Vancouver, serving exceptional sushi. It’s a cozy, unassuming spot, so think simple wooden tables and a quiet, relaxed vibe that feels like a neighborhood secret, with customers that range from sushi aficionados to first-time visitors. Their must-try salmon nigiri, served with perfectly seasoned rice, is the stuff of dreams—it’s fresh, flavorful, and melt-in-your-mouth tender.
The elderly Japanese couple crafts culinary works of art with humble cheerfulness and the service is warm and attentive, making every visit feel like a special treat.
Hudson’s Bar and Grill
$$$ | (360) 816-6100 | WEBSITE
Hudson’s Bar and Grill in Vancouver, WA is the perfect spot to unwind after a long day with a satisfying meal. The menu is solid, with standout dishes like the Waygu burger, lamb chops, and savory meatloaf loaded with vegetables and mushrooms, but you can also explore the gluten-free options. The restaurant is open for dinner and late evenings, so make sure to skip that boring takeout if you’re craving their amazing hummus paired with a local wine.
Yummy Crab
Yummy Crab, a popular seafood destination in Vancouver, serves some seriously good Cajun boils. Come to this casual restaurant for things like the steamer bag with shrimp and crab, which is fresh and flavorful in all the right places. There’s a relaxed charm about this place, which realistically should probably only seat about 40 people, but is often hosting groups of seafood lovers.
On busy nights, you’ll find people enjoying the fast-food-style setup and the robot that delivers appetizers like spring rolls, so be prepared for a lively atmosphere.
Silver Dragon
$ | (360) 694-2212 | WEBSITE
It’s easy to overlook Silver Dragon, nestled among the strip malls and storefronts along Vancouver’s main thoroughfare. In fact, you might mistake the Chinese restaurant for just another takeout spot, with its simple dining room anchored by a large aquarium bubbling in the corner. This is a straightforward place that’s better than it has to be, and the extensive menu at the family-friendly restaurant has options for whenever you might stop by.
They’re open from lunch through dinner, but we like it best for a casual family meal where everyone can share generously sized plates in the bright dining area. Try the cashew nut chicken, served with fluffy rice and crisp vegetables, or mix and match from the appetizer sampler with options like egg drop soup, fried rice, and those famously large egg rolls.
Elements Restaurant
$$$ | (360) 258-0989 | WEBSITE
Elements Restaurant knows how to attract a crowd. This stylish dining spot is the closest Vancouver has to a true culinary destination. We like their standout dishes, like the octopus appetizer with avocado mousse, made with tender octopus and creamy avocado. It’s best to book ahead here and secure a reservation, especially on weekends when the tables can fill up quickly.
Vice Beer
$$ | (360) 718-2598 | WEBSITE
There are a few reasons to check out this microbrewery tucked away in a Vancouver strip mall, like their diverse tap list and the retro floppy-disk coasters. But the real reason we visit is for the exceptional craft beers. They offer everything from IPAs to ciders, served by knowledgeable beertenders in a cozy space with 80s/90s decor. It’s a great spot to unwind while you drink—or maybe it’s drink while you unwind?
Lounge in the mini game room if you’re looking to kick back, or grab a seat in the TV room if you’re there to catch the game. And while there’s no food on site, the excellent taco cart outside pairs perfectly with a $7 pint or a $15 crowler to take home.
Hopworks Brewery – Vancouver
$$ | (360) 828-5139 | WEBSITE
This East Vancouver brewery is a spacious, family-friendly spot (there’s still axe throwing) that can get you in and out in under an hour, depending how quickly you’re able to pick between the Cerveza Roja or one of the other small batch beers. Use the menu to order food at your table—try to get one with a view of the brewing area—and the friendly staff will bring it right to you.
Or you can grab and go at the counter, complete with clearly labeled options for gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets.
4th Plain Bar & Grill
$ | (360) 254-3729 | WEBSITE
This cozy establishment in Vancouver is everything you want from your neighborhood bar and grill. It’s the type of place you can sit at a table solo or side-by-side with friends in a booth dissecting the game from the night before. Expect nothing but the fundamentals: booths, bar seating, and wooden tables that can be rearranged to accommodate big groups.
The straightforward menu is full of tasty bar food classics, the best of which are the sweet chili wings and the halibut fish and chips on Friday. Like other local favorites, it’s reasonably priced here, so be prepared for a great value.
McMenamins on the Columbia
$$ | (360) 699-1521 | WEBSITE
McMenamins on the Columbia offers beautiful waterfront views and amazing sunsets—the outdoor seating under umbrellas stretches along the riverbank, which means there’s space for everyone, plus plenty of natural light as the sun dips below the horizon. You can’t go wrong with the Jamaican curry bowl with mango chutney, which comes with crispy tater tots, a generous portion of curry, and your choice of plant-based patties or a mystic burger (always get the mystic burger).
And if you’re not looking to take on a whole meal, they also have an array of sliders and the hammer head veggie burger with homemade BBQ sauce.
Portland Bartender Express LLC
This mobile bartending service was once primarily known for corporate events, but has since found new life in private parties and weddings. We’re partial to their wedding packages for their seamless coordination and professionalism, and the friendly staff provide a nice touch to make celebrations feel special and memorable. Their services have solid communication that tends to book up quickly, so the sooner you can secure your date, the better.
Our latest obsessions are the personalized cocktail menus—that’s a detail we didn’t know we needed—and the attentive service from Ken Black’s team that’s so engaging, you could probably hire them again for your next event.
Round Table Pizza
$ | (360) 574-5755 | WEBSITE
By day, Round Table Pizza is a family-friendly destination, with classic pizza that’s heavy on toppings and served in a clean, attractive space. But our favorite time to come here is for game nights, when you’ll find multiple TVs tuned to sports, creating a lively sports bar-like atmosphere, and some of the best wings in the area.
Evenings are filled with groups and local regulars who will point you toward the best pizza (it’s the one with the crispy crust) or the must-try side (the fresh salad bar with washed lettuce). There’s often a crowd during big games, but the large orders and quick service are both worth the visit.
Paper Tiger Coffee Roasters
$ | (360) 553-7900 | WEBSITE
The morning coffee crowd flocks to Paper Tiger Coffee Roasters, and for good reason. Open early every day, the charming coffee shop sits in a cozy spot in Vancouver, making it easy to get to whether you’re driving or walking. And it has house-roasted coffee, delightful espresso drinks, and a small, inviting space that feels just right for 1-2 people.
Whether you’re coming for a quick pre-work coffee with a colleague or looking for a spot to meet up with a friend who’s visiting, Paper Tiger Coffee Roasters meets the mark.
China Cook
$ | (360) 695-1591 | WEBSITE
Some Vancouver traditions never get old: the Columbia River views, the rainy-day debates, and the daily special at China Cook. This Chinese restaurant has been serving their legendary sweet and sour soup for over six years, and we hope it outlives us all. The menu is stacked with authentic classics—fluffy, golden-edged egg foo young, savory, steaming portions, crispy, flavorful dishes, and that daily special that serves as a gentle reminder that Vancouver has, in fact, incredible Chinese food.
Yes, there might be a parking challenge, but grab a barstool at the cozy neighborhood jukebox bar and people watch while you wait for your attentive service. It’s the perfect evening meetup spot before you inevitably drop $25 on takeout that tastes like home.
KIAWE Island Bistro
$ | (360) 254-5544 | WEBSITE
Any food lover will tell you that finding authentic Hawaiian cuisine in Vancouver is an exercise in futility. And yet Kiawe Island Bistro succeeds in not only doing, but nailing, the impossible. You won’t find mainland compromises, watered-down flavors, or generic teriyaki at this welcoming spot, where Hawaiian music plays and the head chef delivers consistent, amazing dishes. Come here for one-of-a-kind, generously portioned plates like the teriyaki chicken bowl, spam musubi, and Loco Moco.
There’s a new special most days, and it always lives up to the dictionary definition of the word ‘outstanding.’
Burgerville
$ | (360) 573-8223 | WEBSITE
Burgerville, a fast-food joint in Vancouver, is a reliable local favorite for a quick and satisfying breakfast. Gluten-free buns sit next to dairy-free shake options, and the staff greets customers from behind the counter with polite professionalism, recommending orders and drinks like the Hazelnut Milkshake. The restaurant serves several breakfast options that they rightly suggest you try one at a time, like the Sausage Crunch Biscuit or a breakfast burrito.
Each item is made with quality ingredients, including their renowned hamburger sliders on buns made to order. Expect prices that run a bit high, but the outstanding service and delicious offerings make it worth the occasional splurge.
