West Windsor is an eating town. Always has been, and probably always will be. We dine in strip malls and at graduations and Little League games, and Princeton—the Ivy League’s culinary gem—sits right next door. So naturally, the restaurants here are second to none. You’ll find upscale spots where you can savor truffle risotto, humble joints serving perfect $12 bowls of pho, and multiple eateries moonlighting as vibrant community hubs.
Grover’s Mill Coffee Co
$ | (609) 716-8771 | WEBSITE
One cafe, endless coffee, two atmospheres. It’s truly a choose-your-own-adventure at Grover’s Mill Coffee Co, which is why it’s the perfect place to go when you don’t know what you want to do. Our two favorite spots are the main seating area for some hazelnut-flavored coffee and writing time, and the merchandise corner, where we like to post up for a latte and some War of the Worlds browsing.
It’s the move for an early morning work session (they open at 7am), which might explain why we always run into writers here.
The Bog Restaurant
$ | (609) 799-0341 | WEBSITE
The Bog Restaurant is a perfect neighborhood spot. We’re kindly asking you to overlook the fact that the decor could use a bit of an update. But the creative menu selections and daily specials are all reasonably priced, and the food is actually delicious—one of our favorites is the chef’s seasonal special that’s always worth trying. Plus, there’s always a great well-curated bar and tap collection providing excellent drinks to accompany your meal.
Asian Bistro
$$ | (609) 378-5412 | WEBSITE
Asian Bistro is tucked away in West Windsor, and it’s one of our favorite cozy spots in the area. Beyond just the comfortable atmosphere, the food is top-notch—order the spicy pan-fried pork with its rich, comforting flavors or the bulgogi beef kimbap that’s both tasty and satisfying. The General Tso’s Chicken is also highly praised, and the soup-based meals are a hit with customers.
Before you leave this charming bistro, you should probably try the jajangmyeon or the popular bulgogi that everyone recommends.
First Wok Chinese Restaurant
$$ | (609) 716-8323 | WEBSITE
First Wok Chinese Restaurant has been a local favorite in central NJ for years, standing the test of time in the McCaffreys plaza. They serve up some pretty delicious dishes like their standout fried rice and broccoli & tofu that keep customers coming back. You can also enjoy classics like soft shell crab, beef with broccoli, and pork in garlic sauce that are fresh and made well. Don’t miss the Chef’s special Lomein and General Shrimp—they come highly recommended!
While some feel the food quality has dipped slightly with new ownership and portions can be on the smaller side, the friendly staff and comfortable ambience make up for it. The owner works very hard, and the service is outstanding, offering good value that makes this one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Central New Jersey area.
Carlucci’s Italian Grill
$$ | (609) 936-0900 | WEBSITE
Carlucci’s Italian Grill, located in West Windsor, is one of the most comforting and welcoming Italian restaurants in the area. The family-style dining room has a warm, bustling atmosphere, but the place you want to be is near the kitchen where the aromas of garlic and tomatoes fill the air. The space is very rustic and it feels like you’ve stepped into somebody’s cherished home kitchen where a nonna might roll out fresh pasta and welcome her guests.
Come for a hearty dinner, like the creamy pasta alla vodka, and savor generous portions like the gnocchi with Alfredo and the perfectly seasoned Chicken Villagio.
Village Pantry Deli
$ | (609) 448-9402 | WEBSITE
Village Pantry Deli feels like a classic, cozier version of two other beloved breakfast spots in West Windsor: the old Main Street Diner and the original Sunrise Cafe. There’s even a framed photo near the register celebrating local favorites. While both of those places are reliable, Village Pantry Deli is more of a go-to morning destination with its warm lighting and comfortable booths.
The breakfast wraps are wonderful, and though I plan on trying everything eventually, I’m pretty stuck on the perfectly grilled tortilla stuffed with generous amounts of meat, cheese, and egg. There are also great breakfast burritos that some regulars consider the best in the state, served by a friendly staff in a welcoming atmosphere.
Brother’s Pizza
$ | (609) 275-5575 | WEBSITE
Brother’s Pizza is the rare place where everybody’s grabbing a slice and a soda, but nobody’s actually overthinking it. It’s a straightforward and unpretentious West Windsor spot where the cheese slices are the thing to prioritize, whether that’s a classic plain or the zesty buffalo chicken slice. The garlic breadsticks are pretty good, too—they have that perfect crisp outside and soft inside that makes you want to order another basket.
The ambience is great, with a clean, well-maintained space that feels welcoming despite some awkward moments with the owner, who can come across as overly familiar. Still, for a quick, tasty bite, it hits the spot.
bb.q Chicken Princeton
$ | (609) 225-9222 | WEBSITE
No two visits to bb.q Chicken Princeton are the same. During one meal, you might savor the crispy and hot chicken wings while chatting with the friendly staff about their favorite Korean-inspired dishes. On another, you might try the soy garlic wings and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere with plenty of seating. The one constant is the excellent food quality: generous portions to satisfy your hunger and tasty enough to keep you coming back.
We like to come for a casual meal and stay for the delicious offerings that are always available, like the highly recommended fried dumplings and customizable so-tteok.
Mizu Japanese Cuisine
$$ | (609) 750-9535 | WEBSITE
If there’s a sushi roll you’re dying to try, you’ll probably find it at Mizu Japanese Cuisine in West Windsor. For years, this has been the place to wrangle up some friends for a casual meal, with fresh sushi, generous portions, and a diverse menu. And in recent visits, it’s maintained its reputation with consistently fresh and flavorful food.
Head to the dining area to enjoy the modest yet serene atmosphere, order the well-priced toro or impressive salmon belly sashimi, or grab a lunch bento box with tasty options like beef negemaki and teriyaki salmon while trying standout rolls like Ninja and Rock and Roll.
Zac’s Burger
$ | (609) 269-9066 | WEBSITE
Zac’s Burger calls itself a wonderful place with yummy food, but really you can just think of it as a spot that puts an equal emphasis on the burger and the experience. And both are extremely satisfying, if not a little bit elevated. There are combo deals that cost around $15, and you’ll find generous helpings of everything on the menu, along with that amazing spicy chicken sandwich.
We like it best for a late bite in the clean, comfortable booth seating, but it’s just as good for walking in for exactly what you wanted after 10pm. The staff is known for being open to adjustments, and you can often see them behind the counter making sure customers leave happy with their perfectly charred patties and fresh fixings.
Aljons Pizza & Restaurant -West Windsor
$ | (609) 799-4915 | WEBSITE
Located near spots like Mango Mango or Woo-Ri Mart in West Windsor, Aljons Pizza & Restaurant is a family-owned spot that serves some of the best pizza around. Really though, you come here for the cheese slice that’s a true highlight, with its thin crust and fresh toppings. If you’re looking for something more, their reasonably priced menu offers specialty slices like the fantastic white pizza with broccoli and garlic, plus subs and meatballs made without that unpleasant under taste.
The garlic knots are also good, and you can order a full pie or just a few slices. With quick service, a pleasant ambiance, and owners who are very nice, it’s a favorite for families, students, and teens—never failing to impress with more than enough parking and wheelchair access.
Bagel Nosh
$ | (609) 448-9300 | WEBSITE
Even during the morning rush, there always seems to be a friendly smile at Bagel Nosh. That’s just one of the reasons we love this spot in West Windsor, but there are others. Like the fact that they serve fat, doughy bagels with a focus on freshness, including the popular everything flagel. Oh, and the sandwiches are excellent too, like the perfect BLT that comes stacked with crisp bacon and fresh lettuce.
The final reason we love Bagel Nosh: the owners are local legends who keep the place spotlessly clean with that amazing aroma of fresh-baked bagels.
