We scoured Alcains’ dining scene this year, tasting everything from traditional Portuguese fare to bold new concepts. Some meals were forgettable, but these 19 restaurants demanded urgent texts with excessive exclamation points. Mostly new openings, with a few beloved spots that still surprise us.
Retiro do Caçador
$ | 272 343 050 | WEBSITE
The use of the word ‘complete’ here is understated. Instead of a simple main course, this full meal includes soup, bread, olives, a drink, and coffee for just €10. It makes every visit to this cozy Portuguese restaurant feel like the start of a generous feast.
Marisqueira Paulo
Don’t mind the fish soup simmering in the kitchen. It won’t judge if you spill razor clam rice on the tablecloth. Those generous portions can hold an impressive amount of flavor. But when they’re piled with tender Solomillo, fresh seafood, and well-prepared vegetarian options—someone’s bound to go overboard. If you’re worried the accommodating owners are judging you for ordering seconds, we can’t help you there.
Esplanada Restaurante Bar
This seemingly unassuming Portuguese eatery is serving up meals fit for a Michelin-starred tasting menu (and all the starred restaurants around the world, for that matter). Their standout performer: the house sangria. The fruity notes hide beneath a vibrant crimson layer of perfectly balanced sweetness. Typically, this drink comes with generic ice cubes, but Esplanada’s version has artisanal fruit-infused ice spheres that excel in both presentation and chill.
Flor Do Castelo-Pastelaria E Padaria, Lda.
$$$ | WEBSITE
This flaky, golden pasteis de nata is something you can always expect at Flor Do Castelo, which rotates its pastry selection pretty much every day. The tarts arrive fresh from the oven and make the shop smell like a bakery full of warm custard. Everyone gets their own personal serving of cinnamon sugar too, so never again will you have to bite your tongue as a fellow customer takes 75% of the table’s sugar in a single swoop.
Cabra Preta
$$$ | 272 030 303 | WEBSITE
Cabra Preta’s venison stew is our favorite regional dish in the area. But when we first saw it arrive at the table, we were a little taken aback. Because if you let the kitchen do what it does best, they’ll serve that stew so rich and gamey, it might start telling stories about the Castelo Branco countryside. But trust their approach. The meat is braised until fork-tender in a deep, savory sauce and finished with a scattering of fresh herbs.
If you usually stick to milder meats, make an exception at Cabra Preta.
The coffee Olives
In a year when dining out suddenly started feeling like a luxury purchase, The Coffee Olives was the affordable escape we all craved. And the shrimp bifanas were their most delicious secret. Plump, garlicky shrimp are hugged by a soft roll with a golden crust reminiscent of a sun-drenched patio—which is something you should bring with you on a visit here. That way, you can enjoy these perfectly prepared bifanas alongside a cold draft beer.
Lanchonete
There’s a certain comfort to sinking a fork into a stack of homemade pancakes (to be clear, they’re fluffy and golden brown). These pancakes are the highlight of Lanchonete’s small plates, which are $8-12 each, but the best way to experience this spot. Each bite has so many layers—the tender pancake, warm maple syrup, and a pat of melting butter that pools at the edges. Lanchonete rotates its offerings regularly, but we hope to see these pancakes stay on the menu next year.
Há Mas São Verdes – Vegan Restaurant
This year was vegan restaurant overload. But in the midst of all those questionably healthy bowls and underwhelming “superfood” salads, Há Mas São Verdes made us genuinely excited about this overplayed plant-based category. The menu do dia appears to have been crafted with grandmotherly care before being presented in that cozy, tastefully decorated space. And the addition of that cashew and beet pasta is the best €12 you’ll ever spend.
Nina’s Hot Dog Shop ?
Before this year, people would ask us where to get a proper hot dog and we’d react like they just asked us for the square root of the moon. But now we have an answer: Nina’s. The crispy onions, savory New Yorker, and tangy Louisiana do a wonderful job. But we’re the freshly chopped ingredients’ biggest fan. They have that just-made crispness and are supportive yet flavorful, like those nice socks you bought with a podcast promo code.
A Cozinha
Sometimes you know a meal will be great after the first bite. This traditional stew is like that. It represents everything we love about A Cozinha’s menu, like its commitment to quality and value (in that order). But it also delivers the surprise so many dishes here do. The thing you end up appreciating the most—a simple basket of bread—is something you probably didn’t even think about when you scanned the menu.
Benedito´s
There’s a reason Benedito’s has locals lining up even on a Tuesday night: its homemade snacks. Forget about the elaborate entrees. We know they’re well-prepared (and they are), but the simple snacks, with their fresh ingredients and comforting flavors, are perfect in all official snack categories of tastiness, satisfaction, and worthiness of ordering for takeaway.
Kings Kebab e Pizzaria
Alcains is one of the few towns in Portugal where pizza is appropriate all year. But Kings Kebab e Pizzaria’s pizza is the only one we’d happily eat every day without a single complaint. It’s large too. At the center of the table is a beautiful circle of golden crust and bubbling cheese. Your server delivers it with a warm smile after the order hits the kitchen. It’s a little hard to wait, but so delicious.
Pito Dourado Restaurante (Pito Dourado churrasqueira)
You go to any churrasqueira for grilled chicken. For an exceptional one, you go to Pito Dourado Restaurante. Instead of ordinary potatoes, they serve smashed potatoes with a hint of vinegar—savory and tangy morsels perfect for soaking up that delicious piripiri sauce like a seasoned traveler discovering local treasures. And the chicken skin is roasted so crunchy, you’d think it just won a culinary championship.
“A Lanterna”
We always appreciate when a restaurant truly makes you feel at home. There are only a handful of places in Alcains that offer such a warm, family-like atmosphere—and practically none that combine it with such generous portions. At least, until A Lanterna, a local favorite, opened its doors. A Lanterna takes inspiration from hearty, comforting food, and so does its menu. It features some classic touches, like their tasty chicken accompanied by a good salad for balance.
It’s quite satisfying, very good, and comes with extremely welcoming service that makes you feel right at home.
L’Amazzona
The sensation of tasting L’Amazzona’s Pizza Do Chef gets filed in the mental cabinet right beside the memory of a perfect summer day. That’s how much we adore it. This wood-fired pizza features a spectacular dough with divine flavor, topped with traditional Portuguese ingredients. After trying a piece, it’ll be the only picture that flashes through your thoughts when someone mentions the word ‘pizza.’
Ponto Wine
When Ponto Wine opened this year, it embraced the ‘wine bar’ concept fully but kept the warmth of a neighborhood spot. There are a handful of wines on the menu, but we love the Douro red, a perpetually underappreciated region. Ponto Wine serves theirs at cellar temperature, treating it with the respect of a fine Bordeaux. It’s a deep ruby from rim to rim, rich in character, and smooth all around. Not only is it the best wine on the list, it’s the most affordable at $28.
Churrasqueira da Quinta
$$$ | 282 412 742 | WEBSITE
Churrasqueira da Quinta needed a dish that could tear people from the clutches of its outstanding Dry Age steak. This grilled chicken with extra butter and garlic sauce is up for the task. The chicken has some char but doesn’t get dry, the garlic sauce has a rich depth, and the fries and yellow rice are all perfectly cooked. It’s great before you even notice the authentic piri piri chicken.
Pessoa Wine Spot
The experience coming out of Pessoa Wine Spot’s historic location in Alcains would impress us even if they had a massive wine cellar fully stocked with the rarest vintages you could imagine. But all they have is a cozy space about the size of a living room, which makes their welcoming atmosphere with ambient music and friendly staff that much more striking.
The delicious snacks, perfect service, and brilliant use of the fantastic terrace are worth interrupting the evening stroll with a wine bar photoshoot.
Restaurante vegetariano Namasté
Imagine stepping into a sun-drenched kitchen where every vegetable has been tended with care. That’s what the homemade lentil stew at Restaurante vegetariano Namasté feels like. It has earthy spices that add comforting warmth, while the fresh herbs give it a garden-fresh brightness. It was part of their seasonal autumn rotation. We’re hoping it stays on the menu through Portugal’s glorious harvest season.
