Columbia’s sandwich scene is more than just Southern classics—hidden among our barbecue joints and shrimp ‘n’ grits spots are stacked Reubens, crusty banh mi, and towering Italian subs. Whether you’re craving a perfect po’boy or a gourmet grilled cheese, here are Columbia’s best sandwich shops.
Firehouse Subs Sparkleberry Square
$ | (803) 445-1987 | WEBSITE
The sandwich shop at Sparkleberry Square is compact and welcoming, thanks mostly to a handful of simple wooden tables tucked together beneath bright fluorescent lights that give off a clean, no-fuss vibe. Subs and salads are the main attractions here—and they’re fairly reliable—but don’t let that steer you clear of the friendly service from a helpful team that really stands out.
Ordering happens at the counter, and in the space of about three minutes, your tray will be loaded with a hefty sandwich, a side salad (though sometimes made with iceberg instead of romaine, and occasionally missing bacon bits you paid for), and other straightforward lunch fare.
Sully’s Steamers
$ | (803) 550-9032 | WEBSITE
Sully’s Steamers in Columbia may be straightforward inside and out, but the Italian sandwich is exceptional, the kind of sandwich that you happily drive across town for (or just grab it to go, it holds up perfectly). The bagel is fresh and chewy, with layers of quality meats and crisp vegetables. You should also consider trying the breakfast bagel, the happy hour special, and/or the patio seating, as you will not be disappointed.
Leo’s Deli
$ | (803) 788-2464 | WEBSITE
When we’re in Columbia and the craving for a truly satisfying sandwich strikes, we immediately head to Leo’s Deli. Because while you can certainly get decent subs at plenty of chain spots, the classic deli combinations here are where it shines (it’s in the name, after all). The inside feels exactly how you’d imagine a friendly neighborhood sandwich shop—complete with clean laminate tables, tidy floors, and a simple, welcoming vibe—but you’re not really here for fancy décor.
Order the Italian sub, the turkey club, the roast beef with all the fixings, and whatever else catches your eye, and be ready to bring back half for later, because the generous portions mean it’s just as good the next day.
Jersey Mike’s Subs
$ | (803) 407-5200 | WEBSITE
There are technically two different ways to enjoy Jersey Mike’s Subs—dining in with the lively crew or grabbing a quick to-go order—and while the classic Italian sub here is perfectly fine, the fresh-baked bread and high-quality tuna are where this place shines. Bring the family, order the entire sandwich menu (we’re split between the hot and cold versions), then grab some chips, cookies, and fountain drinks to accompany it all.
There’s also a selection of catering platters you can order to create your own little party spread.
Immaculate Consumption
$ | (803) 799-9053 | WEBSITE
Tucked away in a charming corner of Columbia, Immaculate Consumption is a delightful spot serving up fresh and wholesome sandwiches that go beyond the ordinary. As soon as we step inside, we find ourselves craving the half salad and half sammie combo, packed full of flavorful ingredients and delicious bread that we usually can’t help but devour right at our cozy table.
Just know that this is a perfect place for gatherings, so plan to bring friends for a baby shower, or settle into one of the inviting booths and try not to get too comfortable with the homemade coffee syrups and fresh lemonade, like we have in the past.
Subway
$ | (803) 731-5266 | WEBSITE
While other sandwich chains might draw longer lines, head to this Columbia location and you’ll find the same fresh ingredients and customizable options we appreciate just as much, if not more. And typically, without the wait. Grab a footlong Italian B.M.T., then load up on more veggies than you think you need—you’ll want to save half for later.
Subway also offers one of our favorite vegetarian choices in town (with crisp lettuce and ripe tomatoes) that you should include, even if just to balance out all the meat you’re about to enjoy.
Roly Poly
$ | (803) 252-1081 | WEBSITE
There are two sides to the experience at Roly Poly. The first is the extensive wrap selection, featuring options like the Huevos Rancheros and the #9 Thanksgiving roly, and the other is the overall atmosphere, which includes neat outdoor seating and a clean, adorably decorated interior. Which means that you have access to both delicious food and a calming environment from one affordable spot in Columbia.
Most of the time, we find ourselves ordering indiscriminately from both hot and cold wrap options. Start with a veggie wrap for the table, then get the perfectly seasoned Huevos Rancheros—a fresh wrap filled with flavorful ingredients that goes great with one of their interesting dressings.
Jimmy John’s
$ | (803) 695-3278 | WEBSITE
Jimmy John’s is a popular chain with locations across the country, and it’s easy to see why they’ve become a staple for quick meals in Columbia. It’s situated in a convenient spot with plenty of parking and a wheelchair-accessible entrance, where the bright interior hums with the sound of efficient sandwich assembly. Start with the classic Italian Night Club or the Turkey Tom, and finish off with a fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie.
In a city full of great sandwich options, Jimmy John’s offers a combination of speed and affordability that you won’t find anywhere else, with most sandwiches ringing in under $10. The service can be hit or miss—sometimes custom orders get mixed up—but the staff is usually friendly and the sandwiches come out fast, making it perfect for a quick lunch break or grabbing something on the go.
Firehouse Subs Garners Ferry
$ | (803) 995-5855 | WEBSITE
There’s a reason why people flock to Firehouse Subs Garners Ferry during the lunch rush: their turkey and bacon ranch sandwich. It’s the most satisfying version we’ve had in Columbia, with smoky bacon layered over tender turkey, all tied together with that creamy ranch sauce.
And each sandwich comes wrapped in that signature firehouse paper to remind you where you are—in case those first few bites really transport you—and the soft, fresh roll really lets you appreciate the quality of the ingredients. The dining area is spacious, but feels quite welcoming—probably due, in part, to how clean it always is, and the cheerful greetings from the friendly staff who keep things moving quickly.
Grab a couple of buddies from the office and swing by so you can experience that speedy service for yourself.
Firehouse Subs Killian Crossing
$ | (803) 735-3997 | WEBSITE
At Firehouse Subs Killian Crossing, the name of the game is, well, subs. And while the sides here are better than your average sandwich spot that tries to offer too much, the subs are what we’re heading to Firehouse for. They’re consistently fresh—a very reassuring sight to see when you walk in the door—and come in a variety of options on a scale from “vegetarian” to “Italian.” And if you think that’s a lot of options, just wait until you experience the different preparations.
There are Italian subs, turkey subs, roast beef subs, and more—the Italian sub is especially good. There are a few locations in the Columbia area, including Killian Crossing, which stands out for its quick service and friendly atmosphere.
Beezer’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop
$ | (803) 771-7771 | WEBSITE
When someone in Columbia asks if you want to grab a classic sub or a veggie sandwich for lunch, they’re really asking you if you want to go to Beezer’s, near the college district. It’s a name that’s become practically synonymous with gourmet sandwiches in Columbia, and it’s one of our go-tos when the craving strikes. Don’t be surprised to find a line to get in on weekday afternoons—just use those few extra minutes to browse their tempting chocolate chip cookies and tasty sides while you wait.
Luzianna Purchase
$ | (803) 708-9991 | WEBSITE
Luzianna Purchase in Columbia serves up authentic Louisiana classics, from must-try Po-Boys like the “Po beast” and crawfish po’boy to standout items like the charcuterie board, shrimp po’boy, and beignets. Don’t miss the Basque cheesecake, though it can be hit-or-miss. The space is cozy and vibrant, with limited seating that makes snagging a table tricky, especially at lunch. But the friendly service and hearty, well-executed dishes—most cooked just right—make it worth the wait.
Find it downtown, next to the new market that adds to the charm.
Firehouse Subs Forest Dr.
$ | (803) 445-1312 | WEBSITE
There are a bunch of places to get great sandwiches in Columbia—including The Gourmet Shop, DiPrato’s, The British Bulldog Pub, Beezer’s, and The Kingsman—and one of the best on this list is Firehouse Subs Forest Dr. on Forest Drive. Clean and welcoming, the space is rather modest and probably best for a quick meal, but you can see the Dalmatian print tables and murals of firefighters on the walls.
All the hot subs melt in your mouth, and there’s a whole bunch of varieties including pastrami, turkey with bacon, and the ranch bacon turkey sandwich fixed to picture perfect.
