Wandering Braga’s cobblestone streets, you’ll notice two things: the stunning Baroque architecture, and the overwhelming number of seafood restaurants. Many promise the freshest catch from the Atlantic, but remember—a nautical theme and chalkboard menus don’t guarantee sublime bacalhau. With that in mind, here are the Braga seafood spots truly worth your escudos.
REQUINTE ESTD 1995
Every bit the classic Portuguese seafood restaurant with its warm, inviting dining room overlooking the bustling Braga streets, and its rustic wooden beams stretching across the ceiling, Requinte Estd 1995 also has one of the more satisfying menus in the city. You’ll find fresh seafood and traditional techniques at this relaxed family spot, but you’ll also find rich flavors and quality ingredients elevating everything from the phenomenal Francesinha to the exquisite Linguinni Nero.
The wine is predominantly Portuguese, and the atmosphere remains consistently welcoming to reflect the restaurant’s decades of experience.
Restaurante A Moçambicana
$$ | 253 262 260 | WEBSITE
There are seafood restaurants in Lisbon that feel like a carnival, but Restaurante A Moçambicana lives at the opposite end of the spectrum. The dreamy dining room makes you feel like somebody is about to serve you a perfectly seasoned dish and give you a culinary massage.
Only traditional Mozambican cuisine is offered (entrées run $28 to $42 depending on your selection), and it consists of flavorful starters like empanadas, generous main courses like fried shrimp with rice and chips, and satisfying portions throughout. Service here is excellent—if a grain of rice somehow lands anywhere other than your plate, someone will attend to it within seconds.
Restaurante Casa Branca
Stepping into this cozy Portuguese eatery feels like entering a family-run seaside tavern. The food is just as traditionally comforting as the warm, rustic dining room, while still elegant, like the couverts with fresh-baked bread and olive oil. The simple yet extraordinarily flavorful fish dish—a perfectly grilled catch with lemon and herbs—is a must.
D. Frango
$$ | 253 254 537 | WEBSITE
D. Frango manages to get us excited about a menu that calls itself Portuguese seafood. Even their most basic dishes get unexpected accents, like the well-served mixed barbecue with perfectly prepared garnishes or the excellent executive lunch menu for €12.50. And despite the fact that this isn’t a barbecue joint, their starters are some of the best in Braga. (That’s saying something.) The space is elegant enough for a special dinner, yet welcoming enough for an after-work meal.
Be sure to save room for dessert.
Restaurante O Borges
Nestled within a charming red house surrounded by rustic nature, Restaurante O Borges is a local Braga gem, known for homemade Portuguese seafood at adjusted prices and easy parking. The food here is satisfying (nothing beats the complimentary glass of red house wine), but the old-fashioned atmosphere is extraordinary, especially if you settle into one of the two small dining rooms for a simple and quick weeknight meal.
República do Polvo
República do Polvo has been a fixture on our best seafood lists since it opened, and this beautifully decorated restaurant serves the same, tender octopus we know and love. Each dish is presented with turnip greens and potatoes, and specialties like original cod ‘croquettes,’ homemade shrimp empanadas, or divine coconut cod, which are all made fresh daily.
Despite having a cozy atmosphere and donning the uniform of attentive service and gluten-free options, República do Polvo is still a casual dining spot, where savory juices drip down your fork as you savor a bite of breaded sardine.
Casa das Brisas
Casa das Brisas is quite cozy and consistently popular. That might not sound like a place where you want to eat a meal, but this family-owned seafood spot in Nazaré will win you over with its charm as soon as you sit down. There’s a warm wooden bar and a big chalkboard menu of daily catches, and the inviting space is filled with nautical touches. Bring a date to this romantic spot for some classic Portuguese seafood dishes like grilled squid, salmon, and mixed fish platters.
Marisqueira Docamar
Braga has so much good seafood, it’s unfair to other cities. Your first stop should always be Marisqueira Docamar, but after that, head to their sister location. This seafood spot, which started in the city center, specializes in fresh, briny oysters heavily layered with flavor like lemon, mignonette, and sparkling wine. The pre-defined menus are essential, and you should also try a glass, like the crisp sparkling or dry white.
Restaurante Camponesa
$$$ | WEBSITE
One of the most interesting seafood spots in Braga is hidden away like a cozy secret. Restaurante Camponesa, which serves simple, perfectly cooked dishes like parma ham and cheese or prawn and veal skewers for fair prices, prizes comfort as highly as flavor. Each plate feels familiar yet special, like a hidden gem with friendly staff and good service. It’s a very good choice for a relaxed meal, where you can rest assured you’ll leave satisfied.
Manjar do Mar
$$ | 253 924 800 | WEBSITE
Manjar do Mar is known for two things: incredible seafood that’s so fresh it seems effortless, and being perpetually packed—partly because the riverside location is so charming. Now that the restaurant has expanded its dining room, getting a table is a bit easier, but not by much. If you’re lucky enough to land a spot, you’ll get to enjoy your choice of their house vinho verde and some perfect grilled whole fish in a rustic space with weathered wooden beams.
Keep in mind, the outdoor terrace is saved for walk-ins, and you can get a seat there without much of a wait if you stop by early in the evening.
NUMAR – Marisqueira e Steakhouse
Tucked away in Braga, NUMAR is a hidden gem with beautiful white tablecloths and outstanding service. Instead of typical Portuguese fare though, a meal at NUMAR is a coastal escape—with a detour to the steakhouse side. Start with fresh oysters, savor grilled octopus with lemon, and finish your feast with a perfectly cooked ribeye. NUMAR also has a pleasant, familiar atmosphere, so it works well for a relaxed family dinner.
Restaurante Marisqueira Primavera
Have you ever found yourself wandering through Braga thinking: ‘Is there a place that’s charming and casual I can just pop into for some seafood and a nice wine without a two-hour wait?’ That place exists, and it’s Restaurante Marisqueira Primavera. This cozy little spot with friendly service everywhere and generous portions that might be the biggest (or more) you’ve ever seen is good for either a date night or a meal with a handful of friends.
Order some rice with seafood, the seafood stew, and the simple hake with tomato rice.
Percebes – Tasco do Mar
Really great seafood isn’t easy to find in Braga, but Percebes – Tasco do Mar is good enough to make up for that fact. This cozy and welcoming restaurant has an array of pleasant things, like a table that’s perfect for people-watching, weathered wooden chairs that feel comfortably broken in, and enough nautical touches to make any sailor feel at home. You’ll want to get the seafood combo here, obviously, but there’s also a selection of other fresh catches and traditional Portuguese dishes.
The service is fast and efficient, with João providing particularly attentive and professional care that makes the whole experience feel special.
restaurante tapearia GarfoxFaca
Instead of traditional Portuguese seafood platters, Restaurante Tapearia GarfoxFaca serves delightful Galician-inspired tapas like clams, croquettes, and grilled cheese. Both the clams and the exquisite rice with octopus are very much worth your time, and there are some other creative small plates that belong on your table too, like the unforgettable cheesecake and Catalan cream. Eat all of those things, and you’ll realize why this is one of the top seafood restaurants in Braga.
The restaurant is filled with historic charm and pleasant atmosphere, so it’s a charming destination for a memorable meal.
Erdinger Haus (Cervejaria do Kim)
$$ | WEBSITE
The best seafood in Braga doesn’t have any pretension to it. Erdinger Haus doesn’t believe in the stuff, and you’re not going to miss it. The quick-service spot that started as a cervejaria offers their cozy atmosphere with picanha, seafood, and your choice of drinks, held together by attentive service and very tasty dishes. Go the seafood route, and keep in mind there’s very little parking.
A Marisqueira
When you first arrive in Guimaraes, you might picture yourself dining at a place like A Marisqueira, in a neighborhood like the historic center. With generous portions of homemade seafood and a steady stream of regulars at the tables, it’s clear this restaurant is run by a genuine local family, but it’s also exactly the type of unpretentious spot that visitors are always hoping to find.
The prices are closer to what you’d spend on a casual lunch than on a fancy dinner, but the hearty, delicious cooking is worth making it a regular stop.
Alameda Park
$$ | 253 572 512 | WEBSITE
Alameda Park serves exceedingly fresh and homemade seafood in a space so cozy you may accidentally share a laugh with the table beside you. With only around 15 tables on the terrace, this friendly spot seems like it would be a challenge to secure, but early in the evening, there’s often no wait. Don’t bring a large party, but do bring a friend who appreciates the best francesinhas in town and impeccable, thick reddish sauce.
Adega Regional de Tenões
Like a lot of spots on this list, Adega Regional de Tenões is a little out of the way. If you manage to find it, prepare yourself to eat homemade food and drink something local in a typical space filled with diners who look like they talk about family recipes and local wines all day. Order a few big plates of suckling pig, and be sure to enjoy your meal with a generous glass from their noteworthy selection.
For dessert, have more of their plentiful food, a view of Bom Jesus from the beautiful terrace, or both. If you’re looking to have dinner in a space that feels like a welcoming relative’s hidden gem, it doesn’t get much better than this.
