If you find yourself wandering Shreveport’s streets, you might not expect to uncover a world of pristine nigiri and delicate maki. Yet tucked away in this Louisiana city are spots where the fish is fresh, the rice is perfectly seasoned, and the atmosphere is as inviting as a neighborhood haunt. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, let this guide lead you to the best slices of ocean in Shreveport.
Kanpai Sushi & Hibachi Restaurant
$ | (318) 210-0834 | WEBSITE
It’s hard to not swing by whenever you’re craving sushi in Shreveport. Come to this family-owned spot for their outstanding sushi and hibachi, but they also have a full menu of ramen and Korean dishes if you have time to indulge beyond just some fresh rolls. The stars are the popular rolls, which are basically flavor explosions masquerading as dinner, but we’re not complaining about that. We especially like the Super Rainbow and Hawaiian versions—but the Kentucky Derby holds its own, too.
It’s good we don’t live next door to this place, because we’d be eating 90 pieces of sushi a day.
Sushi Bistro
$ | (318) 855-4682 | WEBSITE
This sushi spot feels like a family-run time capsule, but the humble approach is part of the appeal. Dining here is like being welcomed into the home of Japanese hosts who really value simplicity. The menu, which we can only describe as a bit limited and a bit California-focused, matches the unpretentious vibe, but the flavors are genuinely tasty.
There’s a Snow White roll that’s fresh and clean, well-executed gyoza with a crisp finish, and a generous Love Boat for Two that’s beautifully presented. Since Sushi Bistro is pretty peaceful you can easily walk in without a wait (they don’t handle huge crowds because the owner manages all the tables), so it’s a great cozy spot for a relaxed meal.
Shogun of Shreveport
$$$ | (318) 798-1001 | WEBSITE
This sushi spot has a surprisingly lively hibachi setup that lets you chart your own course for the night. Nothing here will blow your socks off, but that’s alright because you can walk in at a moment’s notice any evening, and enjoy the perfectly solid meal. All of the Japanese classics are present, including Chef Mike’s entertaining grill show that’s easily watchable, friendly servers who engage with you, and a dining experience with a celebratory feel.
Sit back in the nice space that’s filled with warm lighting and communal tables, and enjoy the overall pleasant visit.
Sumo Buffet
$ | (318) 797-6678 | WEBSITE
Sumo Buffet is the go-to spot for meals that demand minimal effort, where you’ll spend around $15 per person (and likely leave with a to-go box). Visiting for their extensive buffet selection, like the crispy wontons and tender broccoli florets, will quickly become part of your regular dining rotation. Grab their standout gyoza, which are plump and perfectly pan-fried, from the sushi bar.
Kumo sushi
$ | (318) 562-3002 | WEBSITE
Kumo Sushi is the hidden gem of casual sushi in Shreveport, and it’s a damn good spot we wish was on every corner. Their specialty rolls, like the sushi burrito with its unique style and fresh ingredients, are an exciting antidote to any weeknight blues. As are their well-executed options beyond sushi, like the salad sampler that’s a great deal with plenty of fresh ingredients and the Ahi tuna.
The place is clean and friendly in a renovated building but keeps things moving efficiently despite occasional staffing shortages. You’ll probably have to wait a bit before sliding into the welcoming atmosphere where the phenomenal waitress remembers your preferences.
Hana Steak Seafood & Sushi
$$ | (318) 797-1668 | WEBSITE
Thanks to the entertaining chefs putting on a show, we’ve walked by this place a few times thinking it was a dinner theater even though it is in fact a sushi bar. There’s usually a lively crowd, but the sushi and seafood are worth it. Take a few of their not-too-spicy-not-too-bland jalapeno rolls, some crunchy rolls, or a bowl of seafood soup to a birthday or special occasion, and you’ll be a hit.
China Flag
$ | (318) 629-0525 | WEBSITE
This casual buffet restaurant is a lovely place to eat Chinese food surrounded by attentive servers in uniform. It’s also a great place to have lunch and sample many dishes. During peak hours, everyone fills the spacious dining area to enjoy the variety and soak in the pleasant atmosphere. Try the honey sesame chicken with its sweet glaze, the fried noodles with crisp vegetables, and the very fresh, very basic sushi.
Like with any family-friendly spot, you’ll probably get seated quickly if you walk in. Prepare to return again.
Thai and Japanese Kitchen
$ | (318) 562-3399 | WEBSITE
We’re not food critics, but our best estimate is that 72% of the neighborhood makes at least one visit to Thai and Japanese Kitchen each week. The restaurant is the go-to spot for both Thai and Japanese cravings. In addition to offering every dish you could ever imagine—from the popular Paradise Roll to flavorful Thai Fried Rice, you name it—they also serve generous portions, which work perfectly as leftovers for the lunch you’ll probably need tomorrow.
The Chef Special roll also never disappoints.
Sushi Gen shreveport
$$ | (318) 219-7979 | WEBSITE
Sushi Gen’s fresh fish-focused Japanese dishes make this place a destination, even if you have to drive across town to get here. They’re consistently delicious and some of the best sushi you can get in Shreveport. Prime examples are the sashimi combination, a perfect arrangement of fish that highlights the chef’s skill with fresh ingredients, and the sunshine roll full of bright flavors that’s more satisfying than expected.
Excellent sweet shrimp sashimi and super prompt service keep things comfortable and cozy.
Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse
$$ | (318) 798-3662 | WEBSITE
If you can’t decide whether you’d rather have a quiet sushi dinner or an entertaining hibachi show, tell everyone to meet you at Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse. The main dining area at this Japanese restaurant is one of the city’s best—it has multiple hibachi tables to it, each with a skilled chef and grill so your group can feel like they have their own private show while everyone enjoys the food. But because, Shreveport dining, you might wind up at the sushi bar.
Sit at one of the comfortable booths for prime people watching—they look out to the beautiful property and sort of feel like being in a theater.
SUSHIKIN GRILL & SAKE BAR
$$ | (318) 585-7874 | WEBSITE
This upscale sushi bar feels like it was plucked from a Tokyo side street and nestled right in Shreveport. They serve fresh sushi and bento boxes, and they also double as a sake bar. The menu covers vegetable tempura, vegetable yakisoba, and shareable delights like sushi rolls gleaming with fresh fish. They’re incredible and will easily satisfy your sushi craving for the week.
If you’re in the area with an evening appetite for Japanese fare, they do a great casual dining experience with friendly staff who greet you with warm smiles and attentive service.
