Mesa was once the quiet kid at Arizona’s culinary table, politely passing the chips while Phoenix and Scottsdale hogged the spotlight. But in recent years, this East Valley city has undergone a taco transformation so profound, it’s now impossible to ignore. Forget everything you thought you knew about Mesa’s dining scene — these 16 taquerias are rewriting the rules, one perfect tortilla at a time.

TacosCuax
TacosCuax is a very authentic street taco spot on the East side in a simple, but very welcoming space. You’ll find tacos that are made fresh throughout the day, families sitting at the tables sharing platters, and a friendly staff who’ll serve you every order with a smile. It’s affordable – you’ll pay about $3 for each generously filled taco – and doesn’t involve anything particularly fancy, but this is simple Mexican food done at the highest level.
TacosCuax is a nice spot for a casual meal, especially if you’ve made it your personal goal to try every good taco place in Mesa.
Tacos & Hot Dogs Los Mayitos
$ | (623) 272-6028 | WEBSITE
Sonoran hot dogs aren’t exactly an everyday meal, but Tacos & Hot Dogs Los Mayitos isn’t an everyday spot. This is the best place for a quick, satisfying bite in all of Mesa because, in addition to the excellent food, you feel like you’re at a bustling street cart where the fries are always perfectly crispy and the ranch is thick and tasty. Yes, it’s unapologetically simple, but it never feels particularly greasy or disappointing. You’re too busy enjoying that mummy dog anyway.
Tacos & Dogos Don Nico Restaurant
$ | (480) 590-1351 | WEBSITE
It’s true: dining at Tacos & Dogos Don Nico involves a lot of satisfaction, with a not-unlikely smile from the staff even though you just walked in without a reservation. But this is some of the best Mexican food in Mesa, so you should do it at least once. The menu is varied (and kind of tempting) and is best tackled by letting the friendly servers guide you in the right direction. Which should always involve the Quesa Birria Tacos and the Carne Asada Tacos.
Picante Grill
$ | (623) 418-7670 | WEBSITE
Tucked away in Mesa’s vibrant dining scene (and featured on that 2025 tacos list), Picante Grill takes some effort to find, but once you’re there, it’s more than worth it. Is it affordable? Yes. But if you’re looking for authentic flavor or a relaxed family meal, this is where you do it. The food is excellent (get the al pastor tacos and carne asada fries), the outdoor vibe is cool, and the friendly service will get everybody in a good mood.
Mesquite Fresh Street Mex
$ | (480) 687-0478 | WEBSITE
Mesquite Fresh Street Mex is technically in Mesa, but it’s worth the extra couple minutes in the car for their excellent mesquite-grilled tacos. The restaurant itself is pretty bare bones, but the friendly service, with manager Iron ensuring guests have everything they need, makes you feel welcome. And while it’s casual enough for a family meal with kids, you’re not going to get dumped for bringing a date here either.
Especially if you order the standout carne asada tacos with that highly praised salsa.
Guasave Mexican Kitchen
$ | (480) 647-2094 | WEBSITE
Guasave Mexican Kitchen is a decent spot for a quick lunch where you’ll grab a couple of tacos and a Mexican Coke from the fixings bar. But when you come with friends, Guasave becomes a fantastic taqueria. That way, you’ll sit at one of the larger tables and, more importantly, you’ll have an excuse to try at least one of the truly excellent platters. The carne asada nachos are $18, but split that by four and it’ll only cost $4.50 a person.
Which leaves enough room for you to order pastor tacos, cochinita pibil, and some birria too.
UNOS TACOS Y BIRRIA
$ | (480) 256-1314 | WEBSITE
Being in a strip mall parking lot in Mesa makes you feel like you’re in this place for something real. If you’re eating at Unos Tacos Y Birria, you probably should be – it’s an experience too authentic to waste on a meal that isn’t either genuinely hungry or craving. That said, the food, a choose-your-own taco combo, is delicious. Get their birria tacos with consomme and the queso tacos, but know the salsa bar is essential and pretty much everything from it will be great.
If you’re looking for somewhere to do a quick, satisfying meal, or your friends need somewhere to grab authentic Mexican, Unos Tacos Y Birria is your best bet.
Level 1 Arcade Bar
Mesa’s taco scene often feels like a competition: crowded patios, loud mariachi bands, and lines stretching down the block. Then there’s Level 1 Arcade Bar, the fantastic arcade spot in the heart of downtown that’s as low-pressure as they come. The tokens are affordable, the two-floor space is easy to navigate, and its central location makes finding parking a possible reality. Ordering the taco tator tots is a non-negotiable.
Tavo’s Hotdogs & Tacos
$ | (602) 565-2798 | WEBSITE
If you’re in Mesa craving authentic street food or want to show your friends how well you’ve discovered the hidden gems (without breaking the bank), Tavo’s Hotdogs & Tacos should be your first stop. Its central Mesa location is convenient for a quick lunch or late-night bite, the casual spot is welcoming, and though it’s straightforward, the menu is focused and perfect for people who know exactly what they want.
The adobada taco is fresh and excellently made, while the Sonoran hotdog delivers that delicious punch you’re after. Owner Tavo provides friendly, fast service that keeps regulars coming back. Sure, you might wish for ketchup on the table or a slightly more cooked tortilla sometimes, but with reasonable prices and that consistently good taste, Tavo’s is a must-try for anyone looking for a tasty, no-fuss meal.
The Taco Spot – East Mesa
$ | (480) 832-9568 | WEBSITE
There are plenty of taco spots in Mesa, but there aren’t many that will also make you feel like you’re discovering authentic Mexican flavors in a bustling market. So The Taco Spot stands out, and while you can easily pretend you’re on a quick culinary adventure here, the food is much better than what you’d expect from a fast eat-and-run place.
We like to order a few of the generously sized tacos (and never skip the birria ramen), intersperse them with authentic Mexican jugos, and always leave room for the fries with that amazing dipping sauce.
ZONA Cantina + Cocina
$$ | (480) 912-1853 | WEBSITE
If you’re passionate about eating in Mesa, you’ve probably heard about ZONA Cantina + Cocina, the Mexican-Latin fusion spot that’s been expanding across the valley. But this lively cantina is more than just the latest place where you’re forced to shout over the music (even with a table). It’s home to truly fantastic food, including so many different types of tacos and sushi rolls, you’ll be forced to order all of them just so you can have a March Madness-style flavor bracket.
Between the energetic atmosphere and reasonable prices, this isn’t exactly a quiet dinner option. But it is one you’ll look forward to.
Rolbertos Taco Shop
$ | (480) 844-2420 | WEBSITE
As far as we’re concerned, there is no better late-night taco spot in Mesa than Rolberto’s. This 24-hour Mexican restaurant not only has one of the best drive-throughs in the area, but also an excellent menu that will give even your pickiest friend a reason to be happy after midnight. Get the enchiladas, the Super Nachos, and a horchata, and enjoy a place that makes serving authentic food around the clock look incredibly easy.
Papa Locos Tacos & Burgers & Jay’s Hot Chicken
$ | (480) 590-7914 | WEBSITE
For years, Mesa’s taco scene had its reliable standbys, but Papa Locos Tacos & Jay’s Hot Chicken arrived to give the area a clean, friendly spot with a fantastic menu. Fast forward to now: it’s become an underrated favorite, and the place is as lively as ever. It’s not a huge restaurant, so parking is almost always available, but you won’t find many better family-friendly spots than this place. Order the shredded beef tacos.
Chikiliquis Taco Stand
$ | (480) 664-6020 | WEBSITE
Mesa has never been a beacon of great Mexican food, but Chikiliquis Taco Stand is doing its job to make up for the rest of the city. Chikiliquis is laid-back, easy to get into, and the kind of place you stroll in with a few friends after work and end up staying till 10pm. You’re going to want the Diablo taco, lots of handmade tortillas, and the off-menu Carne asada fries.
Carne Asada
$ | (480) 969-5153 | WEBSITE
For years we’ve been searching for that perfect spot where the carne asada fries look as awesome as they taste, and now we just keep finding excuses to head back to Carne Asada. This hidden gem has everything we love (irresistible meats like Asada and Birria, signature burritos with hatch chili, friendly owner and staff) and plenty to explore (chicken bowls, quesadillas, a whole kids menu).
It’s a quick, order-at-the-counter kind of place with that made-to-order freshness, but they’re also totally accommodating if you want to linger over another round of those amazing toppings.
