Find both, and everything in between, on our guide.
THAI KITCHEN
$ | (480) 939-2118 | WEBSITE
Like the best Thai spots in Phoenix, this Mesa gem is one to bookmark if you find yourself in Arizona craving something bold and authentic. Escape the strip-mall sprawl, and eat some fiery, fragrant drunken noodles under warm lighting. That, or the standout of the menu: a creamy, complex masaman curry with chicken. Like everything here, it’s remarkably balanced, and as satisfying in desert summer as it would be in Bangkok monsoon.
Whatever you order, take advantage of THAI KITCHEN’s fair portions so you can try a couple of their traditional dishes from the menu. (We especially like the crystal fried noodles, hot and fresh with perfect texture.)
Thai Food Corner
$ | (480) 969-0087 | WEBSITE
Nothing will measure up to eating a blistering-hot plate of Pad Thai at the original Thai Food Corner. So, no, their second location in Mesa isn’t quite as magical as the first. (For starters, there’s no ornate interior, no Thai music, and no cozy corner that wraps you in warmth as you eat a drip-down-your-chin curry on a cool desert evening.) Still, the food is just as incredible.
Get Thai Food Corner’s famed “Thai Toast,” with crispy edges and creamy center, and remind your visitor that the best flavor in Arizona isn’t the spice of a chili—it’s a forkful of Pad Thai, followed by a sweet Thai jelly made from coconut milk.
Royyim Thai Cuisine
$ | (480) 892-9456 | WEBSITE
Whichever restaurant you choose in the area, plan a stop at Royyim Thai Cuisine after. They make their curries on site, with a rich texture and interesting rotating options, like pineapple beef curry, and yellow curry with chicken. Even their wonton soup is better than most versions, with a broth that goes well with noodles in the form of Thai boat noodles. Royyim Thai Cuisine also serves generous vegetarian options, which might just be the excuse you need to have some curry before noon.
Phở Number One Restaurant
$ | (480) 755-8700 | WEBSITE
From the team behind the city’s top Vietnamese spots, Phở Number One is one of Mesa’s best options for a quick, casual, and affordable meal. Get one of the large, fresh phở bowls, ranging from $12 to $18. Think perfectly cooked rice noodles, flavorful broth, and customizable toppings. Whatever you choose will be bursting with flavor and too generous to finish in one sitting. Grab yours at the clean, welcoming counter, and make all those other phở lovers jealous.
Thai House Mesa
$ | (480) 924-1623 | WEBSITE
If you thought you had to drive across town for authentic Thai food, think again. This Mesa spot makes everything fresh, from the perfectly balanced tofu pad Thai to the aromatic panang chicken. Start with the spicy beef noodles so you can experience the depth of flavor. The orange chicken here is on par with some of our favorites in Phoenix and Scottsdale, with crispy exteriors and a tangy-sweet sauce that doesn’t overwhelm.
Thai Patio
$ | (480) 924-2400 | WEBSITE
This Thai spot is perfect for those who crave authentic flavors, in a cozy outdoor patio that makes it feel a little like a tropical escape. Try the Panang curry, the pad see ew, and the lunch special that comes with a small egg roll. These are dangerously flavorful and therefore undeniably good, but we find that they’re best enjoyed with the interesting spice ratings—which brings us to our next point: it’s important to ask about the spice level to get it just right.
The attentive waiter ensures drinks are never empty and needs are well taken care of, with reasonable prices especially during lunch hours. Parking can be busy, but visitors usually find a spot easily. Overall, it’s a beloved place for delicious and authentic Thai cuisine with a warm, peaceful atmosphere.
Tum Nak Thai
$ | (480) 654-4225 | WEBSITE
Tum Nak Thai opened in a Mesa shopping center, and eating there still kind of feels like being in a strip mall. That’s part of its charm. The food at this first-time Thai craving spot is prepared well, even if it’s a bit uninspired—but the real draw is the serene atmosphere with friendly, fast service, which feels practically like eating in Thailand. Lunch is a special with rice and eggroll situation, and afterwards you can take advantage of their large free parking lot.
Soda Bun Thai Food
$ | (480) 656-4118 | WEBSITE
Mesa has plenty of Thai spots along Main Street, but Soda Bun Thai Food is the only one that’s truly family-run. And in a city known for its strip malls, that’s got to mean something. The cozy spot isn’t mentioned as often as Thai Spice or Lemon Grass down the road, but it’s a solid choice when those places are packed. The pad see ew here leans more toward comfort food than traditional street-style noodles, so bring a friend here if you’ve already shown them the usual suspects.
The dim lighting gives it that homey feel you want on a weeknight, and at around $50 for a full spread, you won’t leave hungry. Just know it’s mostly cash-friendly, so plan accordingly.
Tara Thai 2go
$ | (480) 597-6994 | WEBSITE
Mesa has plenty of crowded Thai spots serving $16.50 mediocre pad Thai, but Tara Thai 2go is different. The late-night restaurant on a quiet stretch is generally aromatic and full of regulars from the neighborhood eating chicken pad Thai. Though sometimes a few well-informed foodies find it too, and order the Massaman curry in the middle of the night because they can. Lucky them.
Nunthaporn’s Thai Cuisine
$ | (480) 398-7104 | WEBSITE
Nunthaporn’s Thai Cuisine is the antithesis of those trendy fusion spots. It’s tucked away in a quiet Mesa neighborhood, and the odds of encountering someone here who doesn’t know their Thai food are refreshingly low. The cozy spot has a pretty superb yellow curry, but they also have incredible larb with chopped chicken and lime seasoning, and cashew meals with customizable spice levels.
Come by yourself to savor the authentic flavors, or bring an out-of-towner for lunch or dinner, where they’ll feel like they’re experiencing real Thai cuisine at a clean table filled with wonderful aromas.
5 R CHA Thai Bistro
$$ | (480) 854-1487 | WEBSITE
Unless you’re a regular in Mesa, you may never have stumbled upon 5 R CHA Thai Bistro. This place doesn’t have much online buzz, and it’s tucked away where you mostly just find neighborhood regulars. But you really need to eat here. A standout for Thai food, 5 R CHA is a slightly upscale, under-the-radar spot that serves exceptional dishes and isn’t especially hard to get a table.
The space is warm and inviting, with soft lighting that creates a cozy atmosphere, and the dining room is a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine and a generous serving of their famous Kao Soi.
Mae-Khong Thai Tapas & Bar
$$ | (480) 702-0367 | WEBSITE
Mae-Khong Thai Tapas & Bar serves a $25 Thai tapas set in a cozy strip plaza spot that’s dominated by Mesa regulars who are already on their second round of Thai tea. It’s right in the mall parking lot, and so convenient that you can see families heading to their cars from the entrance. But once you actually settle into this place—with its warm lighting and kid-friendly seating—and figure out the menu—with clear vegetarian descriptions—you could frankly be at your favorite neighborhood joint.
(That’s a good thing.) Bring a date, and start with pork skewers at the bar before you head to the outside seating and eat some spicy shrimp pad Thai brushed with just the right heat.
Thai Chili 2go
$ | (480) 378-2601 | WEBSITE
Thai Chili 2go opened in Mesa, but its commitment to authentic Thai flavors feels timeless. The staff here works with genuine care, ensuring every order is handled with attention and warmth. People often compare takeout spots, but we’re team Thai Chili 2go. The pad Thai with chicken is perfectly balanced, with noodles that have just the right chew to complement the savory tamarind sauce and fresh bean sprouts.
They don’t do dine-in, so grab your order from the counter, where you can watch the kitchen team swiftly prepare dish after dish in the open kitchen area. On busy nights, you might find a steady stream of customers picking up orders, mostly regulars from the neighborhood.
