Of all the culinary adventures we’ve reluctantly shelved this year (pho-less weekends, banh mi withdrawals—you know the drill), “authentic Vietnamese feast” hasn’t exactly topped the list. But as Alameda’s vibrant food scene reawakens, that steaming bowl of pho or perfect summer roll is finally within reach again. From family-run gems in historic districts to modern takes on classic street food, here are 10 spots where every bite feels like a celebration.

Nothing says “You f*cking did it!” like a proper bowl of pho – and the broth doesn’t get much more authentic than the one at Sidestreet Pho. The Alameda original is home to a legendary oxtail pho that comes with your choice of additions (get the extra jalapeños), plus shrimp spring rolls, and banh mi with pho dipping bowl. Throw in a few homemade sour chili sauces and a side of the best chicken porridge with savory donut in town, and your night of comfort at their small front tables is set.

Taking advantage of a recent renovation, Peppermint Baguette’s interior includes bright mint-green accents, clean tile floors, and an open kitchen that lets you watch the action. The setting kind of feels like you’re in a cozy Saigon cafe, and that’s ideal when there’s a banh mi combo and Vietnamese coffee on the table.

Pho Anh Dao

Much like a perfectly simmered broth, a meal at this literal temple of Vietnamese cuisine feels like a well-oiled machine. Cozy dining room views from either their clean booths or simple tables, the portions are properly generous, servers leave a carafe of water with you instead of stopping by to refill your glasses, and, of course, the food is Vietnamese being done at the top of its game. Pho dac biet – impossibly perfect bowls filled with rich, aromatic broth – are topped with tender beef.
The seafood sauce is joined by fresh herbs, spicy chilies, and tangy lime. It’s a casual-yet-satisfying meal, ideal for celebrating paydays, rainy afternoons, or just needing a reliable bowl of comfort. The staff is friendly and accommodating, even when you arrive close to closing time.
Bacogai
$$ | (510) 239-4060 | WEBSITE
Bacogai had the fortunate timing of opening in a quiet corner of the local shopping mall just as Alameda’s dining scene began craving authentic Vietnamese flavors, meaning this unassuming gem has been steadily building a devoted following. But rest assured, Bacogai is now fully thriving with a spacious, serene dining room ideal for your relaxed evening out.
The kitchen delivers tremendous, flavorful dishes like the amazing hot pots and shaking beef, plus a variety of meat options including Kurobuta pork collar, wagyu beef, and Angus beef that’ll satisfy any craving in no time. Be sure to make a reservation ASAP, they fill up quickly on weekends.
Rang Dong Restaurant
$ | (510) 814-3938 | WEBSITE
A meal at this cozy Vietnamese spot in Neptune Plaza is like the culinary equivalent of a perfectly balanced bowl of pho, or this scene from a bustling Saigon market. In other words, it’s an instant favorite. They’ve set up a welcoming, indoor dining room, secluded from the noise and bustle of Alameda, and serve everything from delicious Bun Rieu to tasty rice plates, as well as fresh Banh mi and glasses of their house fish sauce, made with care.
The friendly staff and delicious food make it a great place for casual meals.
