Pleasanton may be known for its charming downtown and equestrian heritage, but tucked within its sun-drenched blocks lies a surprisingly vibrant wine scene. From cozy nooks pouring natural pours to sleek spots with serious lists, these nine destinations offer the perfect pour for every palate. Let’s explore where to find your next glass—and the perfect bite to pair with it.
The Wine Steward
$$ | (925) 600-9463 | WEBSITE
A visit to The Wine Steward feels a bit like discovering a secret you want to keep to yourself. There’s no flashy marquee or obvious storefront—just an unassuming entrance tucked away in Pleasanton. But despite the low-key exterior, what this wine shop and event space offers is straightforward: an eclectic selection of fine wines, ciders, hard liquor, and gins, plus well-curated tastings and events.
The charcuterie plate is great for sharing over a glass or two, and the wine clubs offer solid value (two international bottles for under $50 per month). The Wine Steward makes for a nice low-key weeknight outing that won’t break the bank, and the upstairs bar area stays relaxed, even during tastings.
Pastas Trattoria
$$ | (925) 417-2222 | WEBSITE
Finding a reliable Italian spot in the suburbs can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack, which is why we were thrilled to stumble upon Pastas Trattoria without any pretense. Tucked along Main Street in Pleasanton, this charming, welcoming restaurant has excellent pasta, a price fix menu that delivers real value, and one of the coziest dining rooms we’ve experienced in ages.
Inside you’ll find warm lighting and tables set with crisp linens, before ordering the lobster and shrimp ravioli, butternut squash ravioli, and what must be the most generous three-course meal in town from the chef’s selection.
There’s a “neighborhood favorite” vibe to the whole operation, from the service (attentive and friendly, with servers like Oscar being particularly gracious), to the atmosphere (the kind of place where birthday desserts appear with genuine warmth), but everything about it feels extremely satisfying.
Brava Garden Eatery
$$ | (925) 398-8665 | WEBSITE
Brava Garden Eatery is charming. This casual Italian-inspired eatery along Pleasanton’s main stretch has a rustic backyard patio with string lights and dog-friendly seating that creates a welcoming, cool vibe. The friendly, conversational staff make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. But just when you think you’ve got this laid-back neighborhood spot pegged, the most beautiful mushroom pasta you’ve ever seen lands in front of you.
Created by the team behind beloved local favorites, the dishes here look and taste like fine dining without the upcharge (most pastas are under $25). That includes hearty carbonara with perfectly crisp pancetta, lemon & ricotta pasta that’s bright and creamy, and shrimp fettuccine wrapped up in rich garlic sauce. The bruschetta and fried empanadas are must-haves, and the salads with their signature sauces are regarded as the best in town.
While the wine selection may be somewhat lacking, the delicious food and pleasant atmosphere lead to memorable dining experiences that explain why reservations are recommended and the recent expansion into the next-door building shows its thriving success.
Sabio on Main
$$$ | (925) 800-3090 | WEBSITE
This wine bar restaurant in Pleasanton has everything you want for date night: a cozy and glamorous atmosphere, a wine list featuring many west coast selections, and incredible celebratory tasting menus. Prioritize the risotto (it’s a must-try), but don’t ignore the main courses. Sabio on Main’s salmon and chicken dishes receive consistent praise for their quality, served with impressive wine pairings that enhance each course while being delightful on their own.
The cocktails are creative, and the quiet environment makes it ideal for enjoying a special dinner or drinks at the bar. Service is consistently excellent, with staff going out of their way to make guests feel welcome and celebrated. Overall, Sabio on Main provides a classy dining experience with outstanding food, attentive service, and a warm ambiance perfect for special occasions.
Baci Bistro and Bar
$$ | (925) 600-0600 | WEBSITE
When it comes to a great steak and seafood experience, Baci Bistro and Bar has the market cornered. The Ferrari masterpiece at this energetic Pleasanton favorite, served for dinner, arrives with perfectly grilled ribeye, skewered lobster meat, and shrimp, like the surf-and-turf feast you were promised in foodie dreams. But this life-affirming entrée isn’t the only thing worth ordering—you’ll also find seafood-heavy appetizers like octopus, plus a few cocktail classics like Moscow mules.
Baci works for a quick romantic dinner, but we’d also recommend sharing a full meal with family on the outdoor patio.
OASIS restaurant & wine lounge
$$ | (925) 417-8438 | WEBSITE
The noise inside this wine lounge gets loud, and we mean loud. If you’re craving lamb chops but a celebration just kicked off? Forget about it. However, if you’re willing to sit outside (or come on any other night), make sure to get some meat from that glowing grill in the kitchen. The grilled chicken kebab coming off it is beyond tender, filled with smoky flavor and garlic juices dripping from the skewers.
Pair this with creamy, garlic mashed potatoes and you’ve got yourself a winning combination.
Pairings Wine Bar Restaurant
$$ | (925) 398-8846 | WEBSITE
Think you’ve explored all Pleasanton’s wine bar scene has to offer? Try Pairings. This downtown spot looks like a European bistro designed by someone who truly appreciates wine (and comfort). There’s a stunning floor-to-ceiling wine rack showcasing hundreds of bottles, a beautiful outdoor patio with plush couches under string lights, and elegant wood tables throughout the space. Naturally, locals are obsessed with it.
And, if you enjoy a perfectly baked Brie or crispy “veal” Schnitzel, you will be too. Pairings stays open late, so it’s a great place to linger with friends after catching a show at the Firehouse Arts Center or strolling through the farmers’ market.
McKay’s Taphouse & Beer Garden
$$ | (925) 425-0217 | WEBSITE
McKay’s Taphouse & Beer Garden has become such a beloved fixture in Pleasanton that this creative beer garden spot feels like it’s always been here. The beer selection is impressive in variety but focused in quality, with rotating taps featuring IPAs, sour beers, and standout brews like the fantastic Chocolate Milk Stout. Add a few BBQ Pulled Pork Flatbreads on the patio and you’ve got the makings of a great place to start—or finish—a night out in town.
The outdoor space is a highlight, with live music, heaters, and picnic benches in a beautiful, intimate, and well-kept garden that creates a welcoming backyard vibe. The staff is friendly, accommodating, and quick with service, ensuring all feel at home while enjoying cold beers in that relaxed, chill atmosphere.
Cellar Door
$$ | (925) 399-7540 | WEBSITE
This Pleasanton wine bar is the only spot in town where you’ll find a cozy Christmas Story-themed winter wonderland paired with an extensive wine selection. You’ll find them in a charming dining room on their patio filled with groups of friends, couples on dates, and regulars taking advantage of their generous pours (a glass that feels more like two).
The hummus plate arrives with perfect texture, flatbread with red wine braised onions and prosciutto comes topped with creamy burrata, and the Pear Pressure cocktail tastes like a chilled winter warmer. They’re also located near local bakeries, if you want to grab dessert to go after.
