Santa Barbara might surprise you with its wine bar scene—it’s not just tasting rooms and vineyard views. Some spots pour bold reds alongside wood-fired pizzas that rival Napa’s best, while others offer coastal-inspired small plates perfect for golden hour. Whether you’re after a sleek downtown lounge for natural wines or a hidden patio for that friend who always orders the charcuterie board, this coastal gem delivers.
Skyenna Wine Lounge
$$ | (805) 403-8085 | WEBSITE
Skyenna Wine Lounge is a charming spot in Santa Barbara offering an exceptional wine tasting experience. It’s a perfect choice for wine enthusiasts or casual visitors, since there is a fantastic selection of reds, well-executed flights, and easy tastings, like the straight red flight featuring standout Cabernet and Syrah. You can even chat with owner Lenny about the stories behind the wines.
Just make sure you finish things off by enjoying their excellent Tempranillo, which impresses even those who aren’t usually fans.
Jamie Slone Wines
$$ | (805) 560-6555 | WEBSITE
Some of the wine bars on this list have massive tasting rooms where the experience can feel more like a party after a couple flights. Jamie Slone Wines is the opposite, with its cozy space and intimate atmosphere, and that’s a big reason why we love it. Another reason? Wines like the crisp Albarino, the smooth red blends, and whatever special tasting they’re offering that day. If you’re looking to learn something new, try and grab a seat at the bar where the owners often chat with guests.
And for a fun afternoon activity, don’t miss their cheese and chocolate pairings—you’ll get insights that make the wines even more memorable.
Deep Sea Tasting Room
$$ | (805) 618-1185 | WEBSITE
This Santa Barbara pier spot is just as charming as the coastal views it offers. Design details like the simple wooden tables and the panoramic terrace windows draw your gaze outward, and there’s probably a family with kids enjoying ice cream downstairs while you sip your wine. With all that scenery, it’d be easy for the tasting to be an afterthought, but it’s not.
The Sea Turtle Chardonnay is crisp on the palate, smooth on the finish, and tastes even better paired with their simple charcuterie board. Deep Sea is best experienced at the terrace with a reasonably priced $20 tasting flight and an order of the mixed whites and reds.
Funk Zone Studios
$$ | (805) 698-6988 | WEBSITE
Funk Zone Studios, one of the top-rated wine destinations in Santa Barbara, is the place to go for a vibrant evening with a creative, artsy vibe. Plan your visit for late afternoon when the golden light hits the local artwork, and opt for the $45 curated tasting flight. It’s the best way to sample a range of the area’s standout wines, from crisp Sauvignon Blancs to velvety Pinot Noirs, all while surrounded by eclectic spaces and quirky quotes.
The knowledgeable staff’s guidance is worth the extra $20 to make the experience feel even more educational and immersive.
Barbareño
$$$ | (805) 963-9591 | WEBSITE
Not all Santa Barbara wine bars are created equal, but Barbareño is one of the better ones. It’s the place for a memorable meal that feels both special and welcoming, where mussels arrive steaming in a fragrant broth and the staff explains each dish with genuine enthusiasm. These dishes would stand on their own even without the attentive service, though—see: the divine sourdough bread that’s served warm with cultured butter.
And while it might not be the flashiest item, the Santa Maria BBQ is a local classic worth ordering. Getting a table can be tricky even by Santa Barbara standards, so make a reservation online when slots open up. Hopefully, your seat is near the window where the evening light filters through the wine bottles lining the shelves.
Lure Fish House
$$ | (805) 618-1816 | WEBSITE
Lure Fish House is the best seafood spot in Santa Barbara, serving fantastic food in a lively-yet-refined atmosphere that’s great for a nice group dinner where you can share a bunch of plates. Start with the charbroiled garlic and butter oysters and a sampler of the raw and grilled oysters served with classic accompaniments like lemon wedges, cocktail sauce, and mignonette. You can depend on all the seafood, but we particularly like the creamy lobster ravioli and the steamed mussels with chorizo.
Load up on even more flavor by ordering the cioppino or crab cakes for the table. The restaurant’s original location was cozy and always packed, but it recently moved into a bigger space that’s way easier to get into. It’s also one of our favorite places for a family meal.
Riviera Bar
$$ | (805) 679-5170 | WEBSITE
Riviera Bar in Santa Barbara is our go-to spot for a relaxed evening away from the tourist crowds. The cozy, old-school dining room with its warm wooden atmosphere is a perfect place to unwind with a perfectly cooked burger, a juicy steak, or some expertly crafted cocktails. Grab a seat here with a companion and savor the fantastic deviled eggs bursting with flavor and the salmon cooked to perfection.
The friendly, attentive staff and lively vibe make it a welcoming local favorite, though occasionally meals arrive at different times for different diners.
Carr Winery
$$ | (805) 965-7985 | WEBSITE
Carr Winery works for a relaxed afternoon when you want something different than the standard wine bar. They pour wines you probably won’t find at other tasting rooms in town—think a fruit-forward Cab Franc that’s particularly well-liked, and a Chardonnay explained by knowledgeable servers like Vanessa. Prioritize the also-interesting aged bottles, made from grapes that age very well, the best being the Sauvignon Blanc (2022).
It’s loaded with character, gets some depth from time, and has a nice balance between the young fruit notes and the developed complexity. The patio is dog-friendly with live music inside, but the enjoyable outdoor experience often keeps visitors outside, whether it’s for the company of dogs or the pleasant Santa Monica Mountains setting. Snacks like the cheese board with nuts and crackers pair well, though more options for dietary restrictions would help.
Overall, it’s a charming spot with friendly staff, ideal for sharing a bottle from the Cab Franc Club with friends.
Fox Wine Co.
$$ | (805) 699-6329 | WEBSITE
Fox Wine Co. is a wine bar that has (and probably will continue to) outshine all the trendy spots in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone. That’s because there’s something special about settling into one of the spacious patio chairs for a relaxed evening with friends or a casual date over some wood-fired pizza. Always start with a glass of their house red, a smooth blend that pairs perfectly with the lively weekend atmosphere.
And if you catch the live music with DJs and vendors as part of the weekend scene, stay without question. You could also just stop by for a glass of wine at the restaurant’s fantastic indoor seating area, where the friendly and efficient staff supposedly make even the busiest nights feel effortless.
Aperitivo
$$ | (805) 869-2937 | WEBSITE
Aperitivo is a Santa Barbara Italian gem that’s perfect for a romantic evening or night out with friends. You’ll always find couples and small groups enjoying themselves here, whether they’re sharing plates of fresh house-made pasta in the cozy dining room or sipping Italian wine at one of the outdoor tables. Don’t miss their excellent vegetarian options—the fresh ingredients and thoughtful preparation are so good, you might have to order extra so everyone gets a taste.
We also like coming here for a pasta dish and glass of wine before evening plans downtown, since it’s just a short walk from the main stretch.
Grassini Family Vineyards
$$ | (805) 897-3366 | WEBSITE
Wine should be your priority at Grassini Family Vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon is recognized as one of the best in the Happy Canyon AVA, so it develops a rich, complex flavor profile, and the Estate Flight and Chocolate Pairing is the perfect introduction to experiencing these exquisite wines with delectable chocolates. Grassini’s tasting room works well for a solo visit, but also for a group outing with friends where you can share a flight and some chocolates without talking tasting notes.
There’s also outdoor seating with a view of downtown Santa Barbara when the weather’s nice enough to sit outside.
Satellite SB
$$ | (805) 364-3043 | WEBSITE
We have a couple of theories about why Satellite SB has become a Santa Barbara favorite. It could be the generous portions and friendly staff, but it’s probably due to the Yoga pants salad. This vibrant bowl of farmers market greens is the best thing on the menu, and comes with edible flowers and other fresh toppings. Come for a sunset patio dinner and get that and the spinach artichoke dip with its creamy texture.
The less-crowded lunch is a good option too, but the famed salad is especially perfect with the evening wine selection.
Mosaic Locale
$ | (805) 259-4356 | WEBSITE
Mosaic Locale is a triple delight: a cozy coffee shop, a craft beverage destination, and a relaxed courtyard hangout all in one. It’s a low-key spot where you can grab a delicious cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll—just be sure to try the tea served by the pot, which is a rare find in Santa Barbara. We like their friendly and attentive staff and how the atmosphere remains lively without feeling overwhelming.
There’s also the nice option of plenty of seating both in the front and back, though it can fill up quickly. The location is wheelchair accessible and offers a kid-friendly menu, making it a jewel of a little spot perfect for relaxing.
