Williamsburg is called a historic gem for a reason, and not just because of the colonial reenactments on Duke of Gloucester Street, the town’s iconic thoroughfare. Wine culture runs this place, literally and figuratively—tasting rooms are everywhere, the bartender at your favorite spot probably moonlights as a sommelier, and you don’t need a reservation at a stuffy establishment to find the good stuff.
Illy Caffe
$ | (757) 208-0006 | WEBSITE
You know it’s going to be a lovely afternoon when the barista pauses making drinks to run over to the counter and explain the day’s specials. Welcome to Illy Caffe, a popular coffee shop by day, and a cozy retreat by evening. This cafe is housed in a quaint Williamsburg spot and offers everything from flaky raspberry tarts and ham and swiss croissants to refreshing iced vanilla lattes and Caramel Cream Cold Brews.
The quality is pretty impressive given the small size of the space, and staff take on a friendly, helpful tone with their customers thanks to the warm atmosphere. The menu has simple bakery items, gelato, frappes, and a refreshing variety of creative non-dairy options like the Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish, a take on classic pastries.
Oceans & Ale
$$ | (757) 253-2253 | WEBSITE
You won’t have a hard time finding Oceans & Ale—it’s the cozy brick building tucked among the historic storefronts of Williamsburg. Pick a worn wooden booth and settle in for an evening that just may feature some of the most satisfying seafood in town: crab cakes, seafood pot pie, and shrimp tacos have all earned praise here. Our favorite dish is the seafood nachos on Friday nights where folks gather around the bar and seafood lovers of all appetites can dig in.
It’s not unusual for 15+ people to order them at once to a flavor they’ve never tasted before, and Oceans & Ale intentionally keeps the atmosphere welcoming so everyone has full access to the culinary comfort. The restaurant serves an impressive beer list, fish n chips, and seafood pot pie, but you’re really here for the crab cakes.
Williamsburg Winery Tasting Room and Wine Bar
$ | (757) 229-0999 | WEBSITE
From local vintages to Italian imports, Williamsburg Winery Tasting Room and Wine Bar continually offers some of the best wines in the region. Grab a flight and a spot at the tasting counter to sample something that could at any moment be a standout, selling for thirty or forty dollars a bottle rather than the cost of a $15 tasting. The room itself feels like a spacious cellar with exposed beams, and the pleasant music in the atmosphere lets the wine shine.
Also, it’s just far enough from the main tourist drag to get a breather from the crowds, which makes sipping with friends here feel extra intimate.
Le Yaca French Restaurant
$$$ | (757) 220-3616 | WEBSITE
Le Yaca is pure French elegance with white tablecloths, soft candlelight, and several intimate dining rooms that feel like private parlors. The original location is stunning, especially the gorgeous patio where you can dine under the stars. Thursday through Sunday evening, you’ll find guests celebrating what Williamsburg does best—enjoying three-course fixed menus with perfectly paired wines in that magical courtyard setting.
On weekends, the patio dining becomes a truly delightful evening affair. If you’re looking for something special, the dishes on the menu—like the generous Duck, perfectly cooked Pork Tenderloin, and deliciously prepared Halibut—are there to make your occasion memorable. They also transform into the perfect gathering spot for celebrations later in the evening.
Aberdeen Barn Steakhouse
$$ | (757) 229-6661 | WEBSITE
Stepping into Aberdeen Barn Steakhouse is like walking into a classic American steakhouse scene from a ’50s film. You’ll find all the expected elements: the sizzling steaks, the attentive servers, the cozy booths, and a steady stream of regulars, all of them bathed in that warm, nostalgic glow. Aberdeen Barn is a steakhouse to be sure, but one with a welcoming spirit, a professional touch, and a great sense of tradition.
You can taste everything from perfectly cooked Delmonico steaks to flavorful pork chops and standout Prime Rib here. If you need a little variety, try the unique vegetarian options or fresh salads with homemade dressings and head over to the bar which, you guessed it, also has top-notch cocktails. Unlike other steakhouses that pride themselves on only serving wine, Aberdeen Barn has a varied menu with reasonably priced cocktails and expertly made espresso martinis.
Bazaaros Deli
$ | (757) 808-5408 | WEBSITE
Bazaaros Deli feels like someone took a classic New York deli and dropped it right in the middle of Williamsburg without thinking anyone would notice. Except everybody in Virginia did. This unassuming spot is constantly full of people digging into generous sandwiches and chatting at simple tables under warm overhead lighting. In their hands: plates from the consistently satisfying deli menu.
There is a straightforward approach here, which means no fussy presentations, complicated sauces, or tiny portions. A proper deli wouldn’t expect anything less.
Fat Canary
$$$ | (757) 229-3333 | WEBSITE
Fat Canary feels like it’s been around forever. And in Williamsburg, where new restaurants open and close at the drop of a hat, it kind of has. The space has seen many iterations over the years, but the polished, thoughtful feel—less flashy, more refined—is still there. During the day, you’ll find people of all ages enjoying the amazing corn soup and filling up on Fat Canary’s signature lunch: the Grouper entree with a Blood Orange Margarita mocktail, all for around $28.
But at night, it’s more upscale and a perfect place to savor the outstanding scallops or Chicken entree, sip that wine (don’t even try to order a cocktail here without consulting the knowledgeable sommelier first), and get a glimpse of the culinary technique that launched this restaurant to fame.
